The AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens from Nikon is a great solution if you are looking for a versatile telephoto zoom for FX- or DX-format DSLRs that's easy to carry and compact enough to keep on your camera as you wander the streets or hillsides. Lightweight, comfortable and easy to use with a wide zoom ring, this lens is effective for portraiture and for magnifying distant subjects. On DX-format cameras, its 35mm focal length equivalence is 105-450mm.

Nikon's Super Integrated Lens Coating improves light transmission and reduces flare and ghosting for sharp, high contrast photos and video.

Compact and lightweight 4.3x zoom lens ideal for candids, portraits, travel and sports photography.
D-type design provides precise distance information for flash and ambient light exposure process.
Super Integrated Lens Coating improves light transmission, reducing ghosting and flare.

This lens might only be a f/4-5.6 but still produces great bokeh. I run a D610 so AF works for me and works really well. I have test shot things moving in the wind at 6fps and when it does make the shot its in focus. I am going to try to get up to the local high school to do some football shots with it.The only thing I have found to be the downside of this lens is it doesn't let a lot of light in. If you want a clean handheld shot at 300mm you are going to have to shoot least at least 100 shutter. So in order to get this, I have to shoot at high ISO unless its outside and sunny. Would highly recommend this lens for its price.

This is an excellent paperweight and I would definitely recommend it to my enemies...

Jokes aside, this is a good lens for the money. I have used mine for photographing wildlife, birds, including birds in flight, surfers in action, the moon, flowers, street life, and even portraits with quite acceptable, at times good, results. I just don't think many of the shots I have made with this lens are great, and the blame for that does not always lie with the photographer.
I have found both soft focus and chromatic aberration to be fairly constant problems with this lens. Shots just are not as sharp as I want them to be, and at times I can see the magenta/cyan edges of particularly backlit subjects without even enlarging the image.
It performs acceptably in bright light, but as light drops off, so does image quality and it can take it a very long time to focus.
Since sharpness is very important to me and I find I use the 300mm a lot, I will probably get a 300mm prime instead.
However, for those who do not require great sharpness, or are on a very tight budget this is an excellent lens for the money. It is relatively lightweight, the zoom range is convenient, and in bright light the image quality is most often quite good.
I might not recommend this lens to a friend without a warning about its limitations, but it is a good value for the money.

Comments about Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens:

Got this a few weeks ago and have shot some pic's with it since then, both in daylight and at night, hand-held and on a tripod, at home and on a road trip. This is an FX lens and I use it on my D7000, a DX camera. So I don't see any sharpness or other picture quality issues. Autofocus works just fine on the D7000, though in low light it's a bit slow. Manual focus override is not instant - I have to first physically turn the switch on my camera.

Overall it fits my needs very well. I intend to use this lens primarily for landscape shooting at times. A very good buy, especially for its price. But if someone uses it rather heavily and particularly in harsh outdoor conditions, I am not sure if its all-plastic build can take it well. The lens is very light and feels a bit fragile.

Comments about Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens:

The lens has a great zoom range, is very light (because of plastic build), and is super cheap. I have found it sharp corner to corner at about f8-f11. Larger or smaller seems to degrade the sharpness corner to corner. Also, the focus is very poor in low light situations. I do a lot of just before sunrise or just after sunset panorama shots and it takes 10-20 seconds to focus at times. However, once I get the proper focus it seems to be sharp. Middle of a sunny day there are no focus issues. Because of how cheap it is, I can deal with the focus issue. It will be interesting to see the durability of the lens as I do quite a lot of hiking in Colorado. So far, so good.

Comments about Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens:

Draw backs:There is no aperture ring. That is what the G stands for (gelded). For old school 35mm photographers this is very disconcerting. There is no internal lense motor for focusing. If you are into sports photography then this may be a problem. If your camera has a motor then it is probably slower than the internal motor of most lenses. Make sure your camera has an internal motor for AF.Why you really should buy it:My camera does not require an aperture ring.I can set the aperture digitally. This does not demand more of my battery, the digital aperture function is working even when I am using the camera in manual mode with a manual lense. The camera circumvents the fact that it has this function by recording 0 as aperture setting while manual aperture is set but it is still on.It is both DX and FX format compatible. That is why you paid so much for your large format camera. For the large format sensor. You are not limited to using large format but you can when you want.70-300 mm zoom is a large focus range. I like the flexability it offers while framing subjects. It still has manual focus. It will work in 35mm Nikon cameras. You cannot set the aperture but it works and if you need more exposure then you can rely on the +2 exposure button or add some lights. Too high of exposure then wait till dawn or dim the lights. It comes with a manual. Even if it does get lost within the first two minutes of opening the box, it is in there. Real men read the manual. That is how you learn what your equipment can do and how to use it.It has autofocus and works with your cameras built in depth of field range finder. No more guessing if your subject is in focus. It is only $. I have seen DX (smaller sensor lenses) with no aperture ring advertised and sold on [@] for $ and up.It is new. You can buy a used lense. Probably pick up a great lense at a low price. If you know what you are looking for. This lense is new and I like that there is close to 100 percent chance that there is no lense mold or preexisting lense scratches. It is Nikon. Doesn't it make sense to use a Nikon lense with your $-$ camera? You could use another brand, there are plenty of great brands that offer great deals on decent lenses. Sigma makes a quality lense.I once had a camera that said K-mart on the front of it. It was a very nice 35mm camera and as much as I knew about photography, nobody took me seriously. I like knowing that the person looking into the camera can feel confident that they are having their picture taken by a professional. If you have a $ lense then this may seem worthless but in that moment when you're working and that $ lense quits working, you may wish you had this in your camera bag.(Preparation is most often the key to great photography)

This is a manual focus lens. I found it extremely easy to focus. I recommend a tripod when zooming in at 300. If you don't have one yet rest your arm on something stationary to minimize shaking. Overall a great buy.

I have a Sigma lens, almost matching this Nikkor one. But there is something that seems to "pop" more in photos taken with a Nikkor lens. I just wish it was a little bit lighter, you would think that with it not have any motor it would not be as heavy as a like lens with one. I take photos as a hobby and this lens, I believe, is a great addition to my gear.

I have a good deal of experience with the 55-200mm lens and this gives a bit more focal length. Just comparing with the two I can already tell this lens will give me a lot of bang for my buck. I shoot mostly nature but some sports and concerts as well. This lens should allow me to get tighter shots. I don't use auto focus but in lower light I'm it would benefit from VR, TBD. But at this price point it is hard to pass up.

Comments about Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens:

This lense is great and does everything we wanted it to except auto focus be sure to look at your camera type before buying this lense and make sure the lense auto focuses with your camera. Just because the lense fits doesn't mean it will auto focus.

This is a great lens for the money and even without the auto focus feature it still performs amazing. Easy to focus on your own at any point. Don't think twice about this lens if you are in the need of a zoom of this size...

So far I have used the lens on a 225 ft shoot and worked very well. When I purchased the lens I didn't realize it is fully manual but this will make me a better photographer.
