The Nikon AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Lens is a far-reaching telephoto zoom lens that features Vibration Reduction to reduce the effects of camera shake at longer focal lengths or with slower shutter speeds. The lens is designed for FX-format cameras and features an aperture range from f/4.5 to f/32. Lens construction includes three extra-low dispersion glass elements for control over aberrations and improved contrast and resolution. Additionally, this lens does feature an autofocus motor.

I shoot for an International Race facility and my shots have to be right on. The 80-400 with a carbon monopod, and again I say with a monopod, unless your nerves are rock solid, prodces tack sharp images. All of my images get blown up huge and get a lot of scrutiny from some very discriminating critics, and I have had nothing but raves over the work I have produced with this lens. Everyone says it's heavy. Try shooting with a 400 or 600 fast-glass lens and you will see that this is a lightweight. The problem is that the longer you hold a lens the heavier it gets. VR is not a cure for fatigue at the end of a hard day of shooting, but it helps. Take my advice, use a mono or tripod. My only complaint is that Nikon builds some of the most fantastic lenses on the planet, then engineers (or lack of engineers) a 15 cent lens shade mount! In the fast lane of race photography I don't have time to keep picking the shade up from the ground everytime it gets bumped. It's such a shame to have to use tape on a new lens. (how I long for the days of metal, screw-in shades) Guess I'm showing my age.

This is one lens you have to buy with open eyes. Very versatile and useful focal range. But this is a very slow lens. Needs broad day light to get some good pictures. One has to stop down to at least f8 if you want sharp pictures. Which leaves you no chance of indoor or low light photography. Colors and sharpness is great at selected focal length and aperture. It is great for a hike. But hey any better ones cost you 4-5grand. shooting without a tripod? Forget it. Not even with VR. I couldn't get a good picture anywhere less than 1/500 of a sec. Not really a fantastic one. Optics are great but the design doesn't allow for it.

It is a cute lens. It is not like 300 f4 or 80-200 2.8, put it on and start shooting some great pics. One has to get a good understanding of this lens and learn to use this one. People have taken great pictures with this. Thats what motivated me to go for it. I decided to keep it and go through the learning.

    Good luck.

Comments about Nikon AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Lens:

This is a great lens if you know its strengths and weaknesses, and use it accordingly.

The image quality of the lens is quite good up to 300mm. It then starts to degrade, and is noticebly soft at the edges above 350mm when used with an FX sensor based DSLR. Nevertheless, if the subject is primarily in the center of the frame, the quality of the image will be high.

Moreover, while Nikkor lenses, such as the 200-400mm f/4 VRII are considerably better optically, at the price of this lens, it's really hard to complain with its build quality, and overall optical quality, even at 400mm. I have many high quality wildlife images using this lens at 400mm.

The biggest problem with this lens is when used in lower light conditions, on low end DSLR's (which have focus motors) with few cross type focus sensors. This lens will tend to "hunt" for the focus point. With upper level Nikon DSLR's such as the D700 or D3S that problem diminishes, and with either the D800 or D4 it virtually goes away.

If you keep these shortcomings in mind you can produce excellent images with this lens.

On the plus side, this lens is great for travel considering its range of focal lengths, its weight, and compactness.

Comments about Nikon AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Lens:

I'm using this on my D-300 and I am very pleased. After spending a day with it, using it on various wildlife (birds, dogs, deer, insects, etc., moving and stationary), landscapes (mountains, trees, buildings, etc.), and even photographing flying airplanes and the moon in a daytime sky, I was very pleased that vibration and stability was not a problem. I had read that some consider this a very unstable lens without a mount, especially in the higher zoom registers, but I have not yet used a tripod nor a bipod and have experienced no blurring, etc., from movement. I'm sure that low-light situations will prove otherwise, but this is true with lower power zooms as well and you should always use a mount in these situations. This lens is easy to use and just plain fun. Don't misunderstand, this is a big lens, especially with the hood attached, but this lens serves a purpose: to bring you in close, very close. This lens does that extremely well and is lighter than you would imagine. No reason here to discuss the quality of the glass... typical Nikkor, clear, bright, no aberation, etc. Focus is fast and easy. I bumped the lens on a big rock on a hike and no damage resulted; very durable. No lens creep so far.

I had read many reviews of this lens and had determined that for my experience level and my fiscal constraints this lens would certainly enhance my photographic experience. Most of the reviewers commented on the speed or lack thereof of this lens. I found that the speed exceeded my expectations gained from the reviews. Many reviewers also commented on the amount of time to focus as well as the hunting. I have found that it focuses faster than my previous lens and with less hunting. While the lens is undoubtedly not professional quality where speed and focus time are concerned, it certainly is more than capable of capturing dynamic images under proper conditions. I am using the lens for nature photography and have been impressed with my ability to get quality shots while not disturbing my subject matter which more often than not is a small bird.

Comments about Nikon AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Lens:

I purchased this lens primarily for outdoor use with birds and wildlife and find it to be excellent for that purpose. The VR works fine and allows the lens to be hand held even at 400mm in most outdoor conditions (including dark overcast days). The extra focal length is really great for many subjects.

This lens uses the older mechanical focusing system. For my use, I did not find the slightly slower AF to be an issue at all. Those trying to shoot fast moving sports events or birds in flight may have a different judgement and want to consider the much more expensive "G" version, but for me this lens works nicely and was a real bargain.

The only drawbacks are those that would be associated with any long lens, namely (1) it is fairly heavy / bulky so taking it along on a photo outing is not a casual choice, and (2) as with any long lens, the DOF is quite shallow.

Overall I am extremely pleased with the mechanical and optical quality of this lens.

I purchased this particular 400mm lens because it was a Nikkor. I have been 100% satisfied with Nikon products, and this is the 4th lens I have added. Also, being in my sunset years, my steadiness could use a certain amount of assistance and Nikkor's VR came to the rescue, even at 400mm hand-held.

Comments about Nikon AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Lens:

I purchased this lens primarily for an upcoming safari trip. I could not afford the latest version so took advantage of the Nikon discount. I have rented this lens before and tried it out at my local zoo. On a clear day this lens produces excellent shots. In fact, for me, they were as good as those I took with a rented Nikon 70-200 f/2.8. On an overcast day, or even late in the day, my shots begin to suffer. I use this lens on my Nikon D90, which I realize does not have the best low light ISO capability. If there is a lot of clutter in the composition of your shot -- the AF will hunt for what you're trying to focus on. That may be my fault as I was using the 3-D matrix metering at the time. I will experiment with spot metering to see if that improves. Also, it's fairly easy to switch between auto and manual focus -- assuming you don't lock the focus ring in one position or the other.
The lens is heavy -- but can still be used in a hand-held situations.

I have had this lens for 3 weeks now and it has performed just as I expected. As others noted it's heavy and worthy of a monopod/tripod when shooting for any length of time and at long focal lengths. Some noted the bracket on the lens for monopod/tripod mounting was flimsy, I find it's adequate for my use. The lens is well made, VR works great, image clarity is right up there with other high end Nikon optics. I'm very happy with this lens. I'll be shooting wildlife/birds and do some portrait work with this one. Love the depth of field shots the long lenses create.

I recently purchased this product and use it mainly for bird photography. I am still in the learning process. I was able to take some excellent photos at 400 mm, hand-held, using VR. The VR really works well! There have been some issues reported about slow focussing with this lens. I found that if lighting is adequate, the focussing is excellent. In low light, it is preferable to switch to manual focus. The lens is not too bulky, so a tripod is not a must except in very demanding situations.

I have only used this lens for a short while so I am still leaning how to make the most of it.
I have used it for birding in the backyard with some good results. I have seen reviews where they rate the focus as being too slow but for me it seems adequate and the accuracy makes up for any lag. I also have a Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Zoom Lens and where it's much faster to focus, I can live with the slower focus speed given the reasonable price.
I had not expected the VR to work as well as it does. You really can hand hold it with very good results. For me that is very important because you can't always tell where the action will be and not having to setup the tripod is great.
So far the only negatives I have is the tripod collar is a little difficult to take on and off, and it requires lots of light. On the other hand you don't really need a tripod and I tend to be outside in the sun anyway. It's got a long zoom range and has a reasonable weight for handheld use at a reasonable price so I can live with f/4.5 - 5.6.

I use this lens on a D90 and the combination works very well.

Amateur use. Enjoy family portraits and some wildlife. See attached image of young Deer in a field. Zoom to 400mm, equivalent 600mm on D7000 handheld 1/60 at ASA 400 braced on a fence. VR is great.

I am active amateur photographer who enjoys shooting at San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. Have a super zoom lens but was looking for faster lens with longer throw. This lens has worked out great! I usually use it with monopod or tripod but it is better for hand-holding than I expected.

This is a very practical and useable lens. The VR function does a good job in reducing handheld shake under most circumstances. It is a bit heavier than I thought, but sill within reason for carrying around in its supplied case on on th camera.

Comments about Nikon AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Lens:

We are photography enthusiasts and serious birders, and use our gear to take pictures of birds. We got this lens to replace a Tamron 200-500 because this one is Vibration Reduction and is a bit better in the light area. Having only used it for a week, with no big trials, the "jury" is still out. But having said that, we have found the images we have taken to be crisp and clear with good feather definition on the birds, and it is easy to use. It is still heavy, and shooting hand-held is tricky, but the VR seems to make up for the movement. With an f/4.5-5.6 we knew it would not be great in low light, but increasing the ISO works. Finally, I would say that this is a good lens for the money. I would recommend it to someone who can't afford to spend [$] that would buy a lens with f/2.8-f/4 (allowing more light).
