The Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared) is for use with the following Nikon cameras: D40, D40X, D50, D60, D70, D70S, D80, D90, D600, D3000, D5000, D3200, D5100, D7000, Coolpix P6000, P7000, P7100, N65, N75, Coolpix 8400, 8800, Pronea S, Nuvis S & Lite Touch Zoom Cameras, Nikon 1 J1, Nikon 1 J2 and Nikon 1 V1. It acts as a wireless shutter release capable of instantly triggering the shutter without disturbing the camera, up to a distance of approximately 16' (4.87 m) in front of the camera. The remote can work from behind the camera as well, however its range is not as long. It is recommended for taking pictures of subjects that are difficult to approach, or to minimize vibration for close-ups and time exposure, and it is powered by a CR-2025 3v battery (included). The ML-L3 supports the bulb exposure camera setting making it a worthwhile accessory for shooting long time exposures for low-light photography or unusual daylight effects.
When the ML-L3 remote control is used in M mode, users can select '- -' as the shutter speed. At this setting, the shutter opens when the shutter-release button on the ML-L3 remote control is pressed (2 seconds after the button is pressed in delayed remote mode) and remains open until the remote-control shutter-release button is pressed a second time (maximum exposure time is 30 minutes). Nikon recommends using a fully-charged EN-EL3 battery or an optional EH-5 AC adapter when using long exposures. For information regarding using the ML-L3 with flash please see the camera's user manual. Basically, depress the timer 3x to get it ready, press to start the shot and step away. Come back and press the button again and it stops the shot.

Every year I'm in charge of the family photo at our reunion. I'm always running to and from my camera. I finally decided to get a remote. I had no idea how easy it would be to use and how inexpensive it was. I wish I'd purchased it a long time ago. The only negative is my family doesn't get to laugh at me running into the photo, and I forgot to not have my hand (with remote) so obviously pointed at the camera. If I could change one thing about the actual remote I would have a way to safely attach it to my camera. Its so small I'm afraid I'll lose it.

I purchased this remote for my D5000. It's simple enough to use...set the release mode on your camera and press the button on the remote....only problem is, if you are trying to shoot from behind your camera, the sensor will not pick it up (or so has been in my experience. So far this has not been too much of an issue for me as most of the pictures i've been taking using the remote are just to avoid camera shake and i can just stand to the side and point it more directly at the sensor.
Overall, I'm pleased enough with it....wasn't expensive and helps me keep my photos sharp, however would be much nicer if you could use it 360 degrees around your camera.

Comments about Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared):
The specs said it would work from even behind the camera and for the price I figured it would be worth the try. Sure enough, it works from behind the camera! I've been 5 feet behind the camera and the remote works just fine. Also supports the bulb function too. At the cost of this, why fiddle and get tangled with the wired option?

Comments about Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared):
This wireless shutter release does work, but seems to have its limitations. First, it is unresponsive if operated from behind the camera — a bit silly since that's the most likely position for a photographer. You have to come at least parallel to the the 'film plane' and even then it works far more reliably if fired from the left side than the right.
Also, on my D90, you have to set the release mode to "remote release" OR one of the other modes (Single shot, slow or fast burst modes, etc.) So you can't do what I would like: press it once to fire a 3-shot bracket-sequence. You have to fire each of those 3 frames individually. Not a big deal, but disappointing.

Comments about Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared):
Purchased for use with my new tripod and Nikon D5100 camera. Pertinent user directions in camera user manual so that must be why no directions are supplied with the remote. Works perfectly, very small and light weight, stores in provided case securely attached to my camera strap. Important to place back in case as it would be easy to lose and is made of plastic so could easily be damaged if left out. As usual, BH pricing is competitive and shipping was prompt. Definitely recommend.

It didn't come with any instructions or directions. I had to search the Web for information about how to use this remote with my D3200. Now that I know how to use it I am happy. It doesn't work with the Bulb shutter though--kind of disappointed about that.

It's an excellent addition to my Nikon D5100. I don't have to run anymore to take a position for timer controlled group photography. No vibration during shutter release, as well as for long exposure. Working great so far.

ordered for D600. it seems that the camera sometimes needs to be "pre-activated" or in focus by half pressing the shutter release button before the remote control will commend the camera.

Comments about Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared):
I use a D600. Just set your Release Mode Dial to Remote Control and your Exposure Mode dial to whatever you want and you are ready to go. I have created distances of up to 30 ft. That was as far as I could get back from the camera with some minor barriers such as small twigs & bushes. One of the draw backs is the remote is small 1"x2.25" so easily misplaced. I made a lanyard pouch for it that is clear so I don't have to take it out of the pouch and it is secured to my camera vest. I like to use it for HDR's so there is no camera shake.

Works without thinking about it. (There is only the one button) Tiny, which could be a liability (I keep putting it down and can't find it again). Essential for tripod work, especially self-portraits and self-group shots.

I ordered this for my Nikon D3100 without knowing that it was not compatible with it. Contrary to popular belief, the D3100 CAN be used with a wireless remote, just not this one. You may have to search pretty hard for one that works.
