Comments about Oriental Seagull VCFBW DW Warmtone 8x10/25 Smooth Glossy:

I've been watching for years for a replacement for Agfa's incredible Portriga Rapid. This isn't there, but it's closer than most. The emulsion color seems fairly close to Ilford and Bergger papers, but the base is a cream white, adding just a bit more warmth to the image.

Comments about Oriental Seagull VCFBW DW Warmtone 8x10/25 Smooth Glossy:

I use the Oriental Seagull warmtone paper when I have problem negatives because it gives the best tones. I like it because of the "timeless" classic look for my portraits. The emulsion is more sensitive than other papers, so I have to be careful when I am retouching it and careful not to use too hot a temperature when dry mounting it.

So far I have nothing but good to say about this paper. Provided you are printing from a good negative and your eyes aren't failing you etc, etc, I will almost bet you will agree that the warm tones and the nice subtle "gradations" within are worthy of some positive recognition. As well, the "thickness" of this fiber based paper is nice, yes, I know there is better out there on the market and opinions are many and varied, however, this is good stuff for the price.

Comments about Oriental Seagull VCFBW DW Warmtone 8x10/25 Smooth Glossy:

This new reformulated version of VC Oriental Warmtone is unlike the old version. The paper developed cleanly and without edge fogging in Dektol. It is about the warmest paper I have tested with almost yellow/brown grays. The paper is very contrasty - #2 looks like #3. It responds very aggressively to selenium, rapidly shifting first to purple-brown then into red/brown in the shadow areas. Glossy has a beautiful heavyweight finish. Overall a very useful and interesting ultra-warmtone paper that is not a direct substitute for Ilford warmtone/Forte Polywarmtone or Agfa. Quality control not as good as Agfa or Ilford - one piece had undevelopable spots on the emulsion.

I recently did a side by side comparison of this paper with two other warm tone papers. This paper compares favorably with the Bergger Warm Tone. It is a bit less expensive. I felt it had a bit more "snap", but that may be due to the fact that I printed this one second, and had tweaked the exposure a little. I will save a few bucks and buy this paper, but the Berrger was great too.
