Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Purchased this for my 18-200 EF-S IS lens because it didn't come with one. My previous lenses didn't come with one either and I never bought one for them, so this is my first lens hood. Didn't really know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. Easy to attach, easy to store (backward). This will stay with my camera all the time.

Canon should include with their lens
The lens hood is fine, but given what Canon charges for their lenses they should include it.

If you are thinking of saving a few $ to get a cheaper lens hood -- "foggeta 'bout it!" This hood is well built and well worth the $$.

Comments about Canon EW-78D Lens Hood:
Fits great, Reversible, Does what it's supposed to do.
I thought long and hard about settling for an after market hood but I thought, this hood will be with me for as long as I own this lens so I might as well spend a few more dollars and get something I won't regret, Canon Quality. I've neve been disappointed buying quality, but I can't say that when buying aftermarket.

I find it best to use the same manufactures Hood as Lens. I've had problems using 3rd party hoods in the past. Canon's hoods are well built and work well.

Comments about Canon EW-78D Lens Hood:
I bought a Canon lens shade for my 28-135 lens ([$]) and it was fine. Then I bought a 18-200 Canon lens and I put the shade on it. Good shade and no vignetting unless you want to lock it on. The bayonet lock is offset 90 degrees so the long part of the shade is on the sides rather than on top. Vignetting.Bottom line if you want to use your old lens shade you'll have to tape it on or eat it for another[$] for the same shade with the proper alignment. Sleezy, very sleezy.

Comments about Canon EW-78D Lens Hood:
Works well with the Canon EF-S 18-200mm telephoto zoom lens. The bayonet lock on the hood makes it easy to put on or take off, and it is held securely in place while making shots looking up or down. Another nice feature is that the hood locks securely on the lens when it is stored.

Comments about Canon EW-78D Lens Hood:
Hood fits nicely on my Canon EFS 18-200 Zoom lens and has a positive detent as it fully seats onto the lens bayonet mount. Looks good and the quality is great. I can still remove and replace the factory lens cap (side pinch) with the hood in place, however it would be very easy to do with one of the newer center pinch lens caps. I especially like the "felt" like lining on the inside of the hood that will further reduce light reflection. Granted, it is expensive compared to the after market hoods but as a friend once told me "Always buy the best, that way you only cry once!"

This is a good sturdy Lens Hood. I'm using it with a 18-200mm zoom. It does a great job of cutting down on the flare when shooting clouds near the sun.

I use this hood when I shoot my camera during the sunny day. It blocks the sun or other light source in order to prevent glare and lens flare. It fits perfectly on my Canon camera.

Comments about Canon EW-78D Lens Hood:
It does exactly what you would expect. It keeps out unwanted rays of light, and fits right on to your lens. I really like that it has the nice red dot to line up when putting it on. It makes life a lot easier. It is a little trickier getting it on reverse, but with some time it becomes second nature. I also like that it fits on over the filter.

Does what it says, fits well, can be reversed, but is a bit expensive. Consider other models if you're not concerned about the brand.

Really like the way it fits. After reading about how some hoods have issues with the lens cap or filters, the decision wasn't hard to make. I am a firm believer in OEM.

mounts with quarter-turn onto existing threads when you line up the red marks. MUCH easier than the ES-62 Lens Hood with HD Adapter 62 Lens Hood.

Fits the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens perfectly. Make sure the hood is rotated to the stop position when installing, otherwise the hood can be seen at wide angles. Solid construction.
