Lastolite Umbrella Box with 7MM Shaft - 41"

B&H # LAUB41 Mfr # LL LU3227
No Longer Available

The Lastolite Umbrella Box combines the features of an umbrella and softbox. It takes light from your strobe head or monolight, reflects it into its white panel, then softens it again with a diffuser on its way out.
Some older flash heads (Elinchrom, Profoto...) have very narrow (7 mm) umbrella receptors. This Umbrella Box model has a narrower-than-standard shaft to fit such a light.

This 41" size is perfect for one-two person head-to-waist shots, or up to a 5x7' product setup.

The umbrella wouldn't remain open due to the collar on the umbrella shaft not property aligning with the spring-loaded tab on the shaft. Luckily I caught it before it sprang shut and smashed my flashtube.

Comments about Lastolite Umbrella Box with 7MM Shaft - 41":

I've tried several light modifiers for portraits during fast-paced wedding shoots (the DougBox, a traditional umbrella and a traditional softbox), but this has been by far the best solution yet. It is easy to set up because of its umbrella design, but the quality of light matches that of a softbox. It is sturdier than a traditional umbrella, however, and I predict it will hold up longer. It's MUCH easier to set up than a softbox (especially when working within a limited time frame). It also has a more compact design for ease of use. It comes with a bag and when folded up, I can easily place it in my suitcase for travel. I've used it with my Qflash but it can be easily used with any handheld flash.

Comments about Lastolite Umbrella Box with 7MM Shaft - 41":

I am a Commercial Photographer and have 4 of these little rippers - on the positive side they are fast to setup, diffuse light better than setups costing many times more e.g. Softbox which we use a lot of and a softbox gives greater control of light spill, but the Unbrella Box have their place. They take up very little space to setup and have a 7mm shaft to fit our Elinchrom RX series heads which is a major plus. Negative side is the build quality is excellent except for the thread/stitching that holds the vinyl outer edge to the unbrella ribs eventually breaks and I think could have been done better. Maybe I am picky because really at this price, quality results and setup time who cares just buy some extras. Absolutely these have been used more that any other light modifier we have. BRILLIANT!!!!

I use this with my speedlights as well with my Elinchrome Ranger kit. The light is beautiful and soft as I expected from a softbox type light. It's a little bit heavy but the build quality is amazing, material is super and reeks of quality, comes with a nice soft protective bag. Folds up really quickly and easily, I'll probably replace most of my softboxes with this kind of umbrella box just cause it's so quick and easy.

The good news is that the light is lovely. They use a thicker diffusion material than the Photek equivalent and it's permanently attached which makes it more compact although less versatile as the Photek can be a bounce or shoot through also. I do wish the umbrella rod could be shortened like the Photek to get it closer to a subject and not potentially gouge out an eye. The bad news is that it's falling apart; the fabric has become un seamed from the ends of the ribs. Easy enough to fix though.
