Sigma Wide Angle 28mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D USA

B&H # SI2818MNAF Mfr # 440306
No Longer Available

This 28mm lens has a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture, with macro-focusing capability. It features minimum focusing, down to 7.9" with a reproduction ratio of 1:2.9). The 9-bladed aperture diaphragm obtains beautiful out of focus images. It incorporates the floating focus system and the use of two aspherical lens elements to minimize distortion, spherical aberration and astigmatism. The lens incorporates minimum vignetting optical construction in order to obtain adequate peripheral brightness with open aperture. Internal focus system of the lens eliminates front lens rotation, thus allowing the use of a perfect hood and easy use of polarizing filters. The lens also incorporates a dual-focus mechanism. It is easy to hold the lens, since focusing ring does not rotate during autofocus, yet provides adequate torque of the focusing ring during manual focusing. The lens materials used in this new lens are lead and arsenic free ecological glass.

Note! AF not supported by D40 and D60 cameras.

This Sigma lens is an inexpensive, low-light lens that consistently produces high-quality output on my D200. With a 1.5x crop factor, 28mm is a 42mm equivalent, making it a slightly wide normal lens for me.

Other than the low light capabilities, my favorite feature of this lens is how close it focuses. Mine focuses much closer than the advertised 10 inches--maybe as close as 2 inches for me.

I've used it for landscapes, up-close, wide-angle portraits, night shooting, and general indoor snapshots with great results.

The only downside is that the plastic-y finish feels weird to me. But the build feels solid other than that.

    Shooting on D700.
I bought this lens to be up close and person in dim, crowded places for available light shooting. As long as I keep a steady hand and my subject isn't moving terribly fast, I can achieve great shots with this fast lens.

Many shots, however, simply aren't in focus. Often it hunts, but worse its just not fast to begin with. This is critical wide open. Wide open results are satisfying but not extraordinary. Similar Nikon glass, while considerably more expensive, is much more pleasurable to shoot with. I'm still undecided on whether or not to keep it or wait (quite a while) for much more expensive glass.

If you don't need fast focus and value its close focusing ability, its a great lens for the money. Also, as others mention, the manual override is cumbersome.

3/5. Good but far from perfect.

It is one of the best lenses I´ve used, I use for fashion, travel, corporate. Really well for fine detail, great colour fidelity and all that for a reasonable price, excelente quality/price rate. I´ve been using it for video as well, it´s great for night video since its very wide f/ aperture

Comments about Sigma W/A 28mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

I use this Lens for Event Photography. I had the 18-55mm VR However that lens was too slow, and my 50mm with the 1.5X crop was just way to close. I currently use a D80 body.

I chose the Sigma 28mm because i needed a wide angle lens that could be opened up wide if i needed it and because it was relatively cheap. My only alternatives were the Nikon 28mm which I've heard wide open has a problem with vignetting or lens way out of my price range.

So far I've been using it with my SB600 and it has been performing just as I hoped. The focusing is somewhat difficult if you have not played around with it for a while. It has difficulty focusing on things that are dark or black. However on the plus side I have been able to get ridiculously close to the subject and still have it focus. I think 3 inches is about the limit.

The lens has a nice weight to it that balances fairly well with the D80 body.

To my disappointment the manual focus system on the lens is unsuable for my D80. In order to engage it I manually have to but the Camera into Manual focus and then pull down the focusing ring, thus making the whole mechanism pointless. It would have been better if they had left it out.

In the end I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase. The lens offers features not otherwise affordable at this price.

I shoot with many different lenses but when going anywhere, this is my "ol reliable"

So far, I love it. I don't see any reason for me to not like it, in the near future. I was in heavy debate between Sigma's 28mm f/1.8, 24mm f/1.8, and 20mm f/1.8 for awhile, but decided on this one for the pricing and great reviews. I've done the super wide angle before, and this definitely isn't that lens. However, on the FX sensor, it's still pretty wide. Shot wide-open at f/1.8 it has a very slight vignette on full-frame, and produces an awesome tone and depth. I'm thoroughly satisfied with this purchase, as this is my 2nd Sigma lens I've owned. Super sharp, and macro capabilities are always fun! I have nothing bad to say about it so far.

Comments about Sigma W/A 28mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

This is a great lens for low-light situations; it lets in a ton of light & stays decently sharp at f1.8. Past f2.8, however, IQ is VERY impressive.

The lens is just wide-enough to be useful on a crop-body, but it is amazing on a full-frame body. It should also be mentioned that distortion is insignificant & hardly (never) noticed (at least on a crop-body).

Another major advantage is the macro-ability of the lens; one can almost touch the lens hood to the subject & it will still focus!

The only major disadvantages are weight (no big deal to me), the lens will block built-in flashes (you need to buy a real flash anyways) & the AF tends to sometimes hunt in low-light situations. That's about it...

In conclusion, one can't go wrong purchasing this lens, especially for the price.

Comments about Sigma W/A 28mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

Comments about Sigma W/A 28mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

I chose the 28mm over the 30mm HSM based primarily on cost. As I'm using a D90 I did not need the lens motor (HSM) although I do have the Sigma 50mm HSM and love it.

This lens (28mm) has much less corner distortion than I had expected.

It is heavy (some dislike that, hence the 'con') but I actually like the heft.

28mm is my favorite lens. I'm using this lens for every day photography. Lens is sharp even wide open. The macro feature make this lens unique. Just one concern, it has slow auto focus. But for the price you are paying it's a great lens to have.

I use this lens to shoot mostly underwater scenery and portraits but also for "dry" photos.
this lens gives great value for its price. it is very sharp with almost no aberrations and beautiful colors.
for fixed 28mm it is highly recommended.

This is a great fast fixed focal lenght lens. I was pleasantly surprised with the build quailty. The lens takes a 77mm filter, this is great because all of my Nikon lens take 77's. Great low light.Fast focusing. All around very good lens.Nice squeeze lens cap (Like the Nikons)
