Sigma Wide Angle 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS USA

You Pay: $549.00

This 24mm lens has a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture with macro focusing capability (minimum focusing distance is 7.1" for a reproduction ratio of 1:2.7). The 9-bladed aperture diaphragm obtains beautiful, circular out of focus characteristics. It incorporates a floating focus system and uses two aspherical elements for minimized distortion, spherical aberration and astigmatism. The lens front does not rotate during focusing, thus allowing the use of a "perfect hood" and the easy polarizing filters. Optical construction was created to minimize light falloff (darkening of the image corners) at maximum aperture-a big benefit particularly for digital cameras. Materials used in this lens are lead and arsenic free ecological glass.

I shoot a lot of macro but occasionally, I like to grab a senic shot or two along the way. This lens does it all for me. No it is not a dedicated macro per sae but still it takes great and wonderfully sharp close ups and in dim light it really performs quite well. As for auto focus, not many auto focus lenses perform well in low light situations when it comes to that and I cannot speak for this lens, since auto focus is just another usless gadget to me, being a macro shooter of course. The lens is well built, the images produced are sharp and have excellent color, there is no vignetting what so ever on a 1.6X crop factor sensor, and the lens really works well in available light situations, even late in the day. I have had this lens for quite a few months and it has never given me one ounce of trouble. I see at least one horror story in the reviews here on this lens and it indeed must be the exception as there always will be one or two, not everything is perfect. Bottom line for me, I really like this lens, it was money well spent, thanks B & H!

Horrible corner resolution on the 5D Mark II at all apertures! But otherwise sharp, well built, nice manual focus and good clarity in images.

This is my first digital wide angle prime lens, and I couldn't be happier. It is fast, bright and has surprising bokeh. I use primarily Sigma full-frame lenses on my T4i. After a number of years away, photography is fun again!

Comments about Sigma W/A 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

This lens feels like a quality piece; very sturdy and smooth. Nice bokeh.

It has some minimal image distortion (as it's a wide lens), and is definitely a heavier lens, but the one *major* con about this lens is its autofocus. Not only does it take literally 5-10 seconds to focus on pretty much anything, it's LOUD. I mean, horrendously loud.

For me (I'm on the video side of things, not so much straight photography), a lack of autofocus isn't important at all, but it's a definite downside for this review.

        In short-

Pros- clean/crisp images, nice bokeh, very sturdy build. Great for video.
Cons- heavy, autofocus is garbage, has a larger thread size (filters cost more).

Comments about Sigma W/A 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

Best deal for a good 24mm prime lens. Not as nice as the Canon 24, but it is a fraction of the price Canon wants. With the explosion of DSLRs, and their popularity, it's a shame that Canon is opting for the "greed game" as opposed to selling more units at a more affordable price. Sigma steps in to help those of us that want a professional set of lenses, at a price we can live with. Solidly built! Thanks!

Comments about Sigma W/A 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

The first impression of this lens is that it feels somewhat cheap. I wish it were built a little bit more solidly. When I switched the lens' autofocus off I didn't realize that it had an old-school manual focus ring system. This lens requires you to click it down into position before it enables the manual focus gear. It seems like it wouldn't be the fastest option and has room for missing a moment. My only other negative for this lens is that the auto focus is REALLY noisy. In a quiet room it could be awkward.

On a neutral note, when you put a subject close to the lens there is noticeable wide distortion. This can be a cool affect, but also annoying when doing people photographs. It all depends on the situation and at times I like the look. I will use my 85 for most of my close portraits anyways.

I didn't have enough money to purchase the Canon 24mm f/1.4L so I bought this. I use it with my Canon 85mm 1.2L and the video pairs up very well. You can notice sharpness differences much stronger when comparing pictures obviously, but video looks good together.

Overall, this lens is no L-series. But it does the trick for me. I also love the macro feature. I will be using that a lot. Its a dual-purpose lens to me and I am very satisfied with my copy.

Bought this for video & photo use upon recommendation. I love it... Its wide, its macro, its sharp and fast... Its the only lens that offers all of these at this price point.

Might seem soft at first, don't blame the lens though. Once you know its boundaries and limits, you'll be producing great images and videos.

Auto-focus is really fast most of the time.. but sometimes it takes its sweet time.

I recently bought this lens to use on my canon t2i - was very unhappy with it. Had issues with getting it to take sharp pictures. It was supposed to take great pics in low light conditions. But it did not live upto the mark.
I exchanged it for a 28 mm canon f/1.8 - and i love it lense. Its great for shooting closeups, potraits and night shots. I often leave it on for shooting regular wide shots during the day and it works absolutley fine.

Seemed like a good value. My copy would not autofocus properly. Even with the in-camera adjustments maxed out, it still back focused. Had to send it back. Also, switching from auto to manual focus with two different actions was bizarre.

Very disappointed with this lens. I own the Sigma 85/1.4, which is extraordinary. This one arrived heavily front-focussing (I was ready for that and prepared to send the lens in to have it calibrated) but the overall image quality was so poor that I decided to return it. I took comparison shots with my Canon 17-55/2.8 at f2.8 and the zoom was better in every aspect (sharper, cleaner, less fringing, etc.). A zoom should not be better than a prime lens... I know the Canon 24/1.4LII is three times the money, but right now I feel that it would a better deal than this Sigma. So sad, because I believe Sigma is capable of doing better...

I am an artist and a semi-pro videographer. I use this lens on a cropped sensor Canon T3i body for video and photo work. I love the clarity and color intensity this lens provides. With the 1.6X focal length factor, the lens behaves like a 35mm. Which isn't very wide but is great for low distortion interview, and closeup shots. I have also used the lens for landscape shots and was very pleased with the results. the Macro feature was a bit disappointing, I wouldn't recommend purchasing this lens for that capability. You can get close to subjects but not close enough to be wowed by the subject.

Lens is performing beautifully, I'm getting some shots I wouldn't have - the field of view plus the speed make this the best indoor available light solution for capturing the elusive 3 year old.

The focusing seems good to me, but I'm not a pro and don't have a lot of experience. The only downside is the 2 step manual focus move, but I can live with it.

                      The Macro is fun.

Comments about Sigma W/A 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

I have a Canon T2i (crop sensor), so my 50mm 1.2 lens was often too far for certain shots. This is great for that, and in low light. I've only used it a few times so far but I love it. Love that it has macro capability, also. I probably haven't used it in enough lighting situations to judge, but the AF seems a tad slow and sometimes off(but good enough for a non L lens). Obviously $1000 more for the canon 24 1.4 will get you better focusing. Overall I think it is a great buy and it is now my "all-around lens" when I just want to take 1 with me.

I use this lens with a Canon 60D, making wedding videos. It´s for now my best lens, almost don´t need to use external light, and the images seems to be very impressive.

I used this with my Canon XSI. Very soft!!! I hope I just got a bad copy. I love the build quality and the wide angle and macro capability! I am going to try again, hopefully getting a better copy. BTW it sharpens up around 3.0/f

I use this on my canon 60D but returned it because I bought the Canon 28mm 1.8 at the same time by mistake and found this lens to be bigger and heaver then the canon lens. I was a great lens and if you do macro then its a keeper but not for me.

Comments about Sigma W/A 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

considering canon's and nikon's 24mm prices are at the $2000 range, this lens is definitely BANG FOR BUCK.Throw in the Macro capabilites as a bonus. That will not only let you take images with 1:2.7 magification the MFD will make your bokeh look better!I think this is a weird lens indeed. Dedicated macro lenses are 60mm~180mm, but this at a 24mm can promise to produce out of this world images. Couple that with focus stacking and you might make a miniature look extremely real. The only few flaws i can pick is:1) its build. it doesn't feel sturdy2) [*]loud focusing sound3) [*]77mm diameter + flower hood makes it impossible to fit into ALL my regular lens pouches.
