Sigma Wide Angle 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D USA

You Pay: $499.00

This 24mm lens has a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture with macro focusing capability (minimum focusing distance is 7.1" for a reproduction ratio of 1:2.7). The 9-bladed aperture diaphragm obtains beautiful, circular out of focus characteristics. It incorporates a floating focus system and uses two aspherical elements for minimized distortion, spherical aberration and astigmatism. The lens front does not rotate during focusing, thus allowing the use of a "perfect hood" and the easy polarizing filters. Optical construction was created to minimize light falloff (darkening of the image corners) at maximum aperture-a big benefit particularly for digital cameras. Materials used in this lens are lead and arsenic free ecological glass.

Note! AF not supported by D40 and D60 cameras.

I was going to get the Nikon 24mm f/2.8, but thought I'd give the Sigma a try. I liked there 30mm f1.4 prime. Well the Sigma is a sweet lens. The lens is sharp and focus is spot on. I have been using it on my D300 and it works great on that camera.

Pros: Faster f/1.8 then the Nikon and also cost less. Also good for Micro work.

Cons: A lot bigger then the Nikon and the manual focus clutch is useless because you must also put the camera body switch in the M mode.

I bought this lens for every day photography. The lens has a good build quality. I like the sharpness and the contrast of the images this lens does, plus macro feature for 24mm range make this lens unique.
Just one thing, the lens has focusing issues on my Nikon D200. When you try to auto focus the object, it gives you wrong focusing distance, what make this lens for me just useless. This lens is pretty old on market and I'm just surprised why Sigma still not resolve this problem.

Comments about Sigma W/A 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

24 and 28mm are focal lengths that are right in my wheelhouse, so I wanted a faster lens than the Nikon 24 f2.8 "D" lens but nothing as expensive or heavy as the f1.4. So this Sigma, reasonably priced at f1.8 was my best landing spot. It's a nice lens that does what it should - good lin low light, good for close focus, and for me a great focal length.

BUT, if you ever like to use manual focus, this lens took a feature that should have been a big plus and turned it into a big minus. I do a fair amount of street photography and I use zone focus for it almost always. Getting in and out of manual focus and being able to set the focus distance quickly and easily is a big deal to me. The Sigma has a "clutch" focus ring where you pull the focus ring back toward you to involk manual focus and push it back forward to go back to AF. I have lenses from Fuji and Olympus that have this same feature and I love it on those lenses. In both cases, when you pull the ring back to go into manual focus, it exposes a distance and DOF scale and it immediately puts the camera into manual focus mode without having to do anything else in either a menu or with a switch on the camera body. To enter manual focus, you simply pull the ring back and give it a quick turn to your desired focus distance. Then when you're finished using manual focus, you push it back forward and the camera is ready to AF again.

But with this Sigma, you have to BOTH pull the focus ring back AND flip the little AF/MF switch on the side of the Nikon DSLR. Only once you've done both can you focus with the manual focus ring on the lens. And then to re-enter AF mode, you have to push the lens ring forward again AND flip the switch on the body again. It takes a feature that makes moving between AF and zone focus a literal "snap" and not only fails to do this, but manages to make the same adjustment doubly difficult every time you make it. Any basic Nikon lens is easier to use than this - just flip the MF switch on the body next to the lens and turn the lens to focus it. This should have made that same move easier - instead it makes it doubly difficult and more time and thought consuming. Not what you want when you're in the flow of shooting.

A generally fine lens but with a badly thought out feature that does exactly the opposite of what it was supposed to do. If you rarely or never leave auto-focus, it won't be an issue for you at all. But if you switch between auto and manual focus much at all, you'll come to hate this "feature". It's not a feature, it's a bug, and for me a pretty serious one...

Comments about Sigma W/A 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

For the past few years I have been photographing inside an old, large, industrial foundry. It is a vast high place of pipes and ducts, and every surface is coated with layers of charcoal that sucks up light. High in the ceiling are fluorescent lights that glare but give little illumination. My subject is the furnace and the men running it, showers of sparks, explosions and glowing billets of brass that fly by on cranes. My Nikon DSLRs are set at ISO 1600, f/1.8, and shutter speeds that range from 1/80 to 1/1000 depending on what is happening.I had been shooting with Nikon's f/1.8 35mm and and f/1.8, 50mm, but when I needed to get into tighter places, I decided to purchase this lens. My technique is to leave my lens in auto focus except when the scene becomes too dim for it to lock into a focus point. This lens easily out-performs both Nikon lenses allowing me to leave it in auto focus longer. The images I'm getting are sharp and bright. When I switch into manual focus, the focus ring is broad, easy to find, and is easier to bring into focus than either of the NIkon primes. The big front glass requires a 77mm filter letting in lots of light. This is a terrific lens.

Just like other reviews mentioned, this lens is able to focus at a VERY close distance. I love how this lens is rugged - I travel fairly often and am a bit harsh on my gear, so the ruggedness is perfect for me! Images are also very sharp and have great color.

Overall, this lens is great for the money.

Comments about Sigma W/A 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

Ideally, I'd love to have the nikkor 24mm 1.4 but due to my limited budget I chose the sigma 24mm, and I'm glad for having it. I currently own a D3000 body, so it works like a 35mm (in FX/film format) and lacks autofocus functionality; however, the idea is to use this and other older prime lenses manually to improve my skills and learn new things, and to use them in an FX camera and/or video camera in the near future, or when needed.

About the lens itself: it's very bright, the bokeh is amazing, the focus ring is smooth, the aperture ring is snappy, the center image is tack sharp when focused correctly (altough, the edges lose some sharpness), the macro focus ability is a fantastic, huge plus, and the mounting is tight and secure. Many of the pictures I've taken before with the sigma 10-20mm in low light situations will be now easier to take and will have unique aesthetics thanks to this prime lens.

The only major drawback about this lens so far is the not-so-heavy-but-notorious chromatic aberration in almost all over the image in all the aperture settings (mainly in highlighted areas); but for the price range, the brand, and for the fact that it's a fast prime that was expected and can be easily corrected in the computer.

Comments about Sigma W/A 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

I shoot video and bought the Nikon mount version and used it with a Fotodiox Pro adapter on my Canon 60D. Using an adapter had no effect on IQ. I thought the overall IQ of this lens was good in most situations, but it did have a weak point. Not sure if I just got a bad copy, but this lens had really hight purple fringing / chromatic aberation on the edges, much more so than all my other lenses. So I ended up returning it. Kind of dissppointed because I really wanted to like this lense because I loved the close focusing and that it has a manual aperture ring so I could use it on any type of camera with an adapter. But, shoot.... the Chromatic abertations just killed it for me.

It allows me to get the full backdrop in my shot as well as a beautiful, sharp BRIGHT image.
The manual focus may be a bit difficult for novices but I am very pleased with this purchase.

I chose this lens over the comparable Nikon lens, due to budget, but I can see that I don't regret buying this lens. I wanted something that was wide angle. The fact that the lens is capable of macro, is a bonus to me. I've not taken macro to this point, and I'm anxious to learn a new skill. I chose this over the Sigma 20 1.8 due to the 24 1.8, having a little better reviews I found from research. Is the Nikon 24 1.4G a better lens, probably, but for the money, I don't regret my purchase.

Comments about Sigma W/A 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

I've been using this lens in a bunch of low light environments and it produces quick and clear shots without fail. In lighted conditions, shots are crisp and clear, and the manual focus is smooth and easy to use. For anyone wary of buying a Sigma, this is a great lens and I'd definitely buy it again!

I took a chance on this lens, before shelling out 2k+ on the new nikon version that just became available. I really could not be happier, if you know how to use these types of lenses wide open you will be happy too. My copy is tack sharp where it should be, fast and accurate focusing. The build quality feels sturdy and reliable. I will be taking a chance on more sigma glass in the future.

Optically the lens is good but had to do a +20 lens correction with my D300s. Without the +20 correction it would get the wrong focusing distance leaving the picture blurry at best. If the correction was +2 or 3 I may have keep it. I'm also not a big fan of the clutch for manual focus. I got the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G instead.

I use it for both indoor and outdoor low light shooting. Good for experimental Macro shots - offers good composition possibilities. Good bokeh and light gathering capability.
+ves Well constructed, very sharp output, wide enough for dx format, balances well on my d200
-ves AF whines in low light - prefer to use manual focus, big and heavy for candid shooting

Comments about Sigma W/A 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

This lens is on my D80 most of the time. It is great for outdoor nature scenes to indoor meeting and sports. From flowers to concerts to volleyball in dim gyms, I have gotten some great photos. The F1.8 is fast and sharp. If I take a bad photo with this, it is my fault (usually I messed up the focus). It balances well with my camera body, focuses fast enough and is sharp. The only negative is the size of the front glass so filters are a tad pricey and do not fit on my other prime lens. Be careful that you don't scratch the rear lens so always put a rear lens cap when you switch lens and drop this one in your camera bag. It comes with its own case. This Sigma does everything I want it to do.

This lens is an excellent choice for anyone who feels limited by their kit lenses, but is not ready to spend their money on a Nikon brand lens. This is a very sharp lens that works great for wide angle, low light conditions. The downside is its size. It is a very large lens that is also quite heavy. In addition, there can be some zoom lag depending on the subject. Overall though I would recommend it for anyone looking to move past a kit lens, without breaking the bank.

Comments about Sigma W/A 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro AF Lens:

As a wedding photographer, I love to shoot wide open. With the need for a wide lens that is affordable, I was looking at the nikon 24/2.8 but wanted a faster aperture to limit depth of field.

This lens does just that. The 1.8 aperture looks awesome wide open and close due to the macro ability, and over all the lens is great so far (just shot one wedding so far with it.)

But the focus ring is kind of weird and the low light focus leaves alot to be desired. I really wish that they would remake it with HSM, but the colors and contrast are really great.

Until Nikon makes a version of this lens, I think that it will be a keeper.

I'll post more info as a shoot more with it, but the first impression is that is is pretty good over all.

I photograph everything all the time and tough I had seven lens on my quiver, beeing 2 zooms, there was something missig. I am very impressed with the quality of my new Sigma 24mm/f1.8 lens. The definition of the imagens captured are superb even when shooting against the light source. Included hood works fine. Colors are real, kind of whatyouseeiswhatyouget, and rarely have to be fixed. Its great luminosity (1.8) allows me to take night pictures with an interesting depth of field. It is lightweight and is my all time lens now. Great 24 mm!
