Sigma Super Wide Angle 20mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF RF Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS USA

You Pay: $629.00

This 20mm is a Super wide-angle lens with a large aperture of f/1.8 and angle of view 94.5°. It has Macro focusing capability with a minimum focusing distance of just 7.9", for a reproduction ratio of 1:4. The 9-bladed iris diaphragm obtains beautiful out of focus image characteristics. Aspherical lens elements in the front & rear lens groups minimize distortion, spherical aberration and astigmatisms. The lens has non-vignetting optical construction in order to obtain adequate peripheral brightness with wide apertures-especially desirable for digital cameras. The lens incorporates a rear focus system eliminating front lens rotation. The focusing ring does not rotate during autofocus yet provides adequate focusing torque of the focusing ring during manual focusing of the lens. The lens materials used in this new lens are lead and arsenic free ecological glass.

As a landscape Photographer I did not own a lens that was faster than F4 and for AstroPhotography I needed to have a faster lens 2.8 or below for my Canon 5DmkII.
After reviewing both the Canon and Sigma and "cost", I bought the 20mm 1.8 and have been very happy with the both the timelapse and still images.
It's amazing the difference that a 1.8 makes when recording the stars in the Arizona desert.

I purchased this lens to shoot stars due to its speed and wide angle and ignored most reviews thinking that people were just being picky and over critical, after all, these were just the specs I needed! Alas, I was terribly disappointed by this Sigma lens. Wide open this lens is useless for night shooting as the stars, even in shorter exposures blur and flare in a halo anywhere outside of the very center. This may be a good effect for some portrait shooting but not for MY purpose. Thanks B&H for your "stellar" return policy, even though I could have avoided this by actually believing some of the former reviews!

Comments about Sigma Super W/A 20mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF RF AF Lens:

I'd been looking to buy this lens for a couple of years and finally got around to it. I work with video and I needed a fast, wide lens so I could film in poorly lit places and on the streets at night. This lens is fantastic and one of the smartest purchases I ever made.
But it goes a little further than I imagined: it also works great for macro (both photo and video).

Comments about Sigma Super W/A 20mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF RF AF Lens:

I purchased this lens to shoot with it at live music events in dark venues with stage lighting and in very fast-paced environments, unfortunately this lens didn't work out so well for me because in those very demanding situations it's auto focus performance left much to be desired as it often struggled to achieve focus. I will not say that it's focusing is useless, it's just not as fast and accurate as my Canon EF 28mm f1.8 under the same circumstances with the same camera. Also, it doesn't have an Ultrasonic focusing mechanism or equivalent so it's focusing is slow and noisy. Furthermore, it's color saturation is not quite up to par either, I'd say I get about 10-15% less color saturation than with my EF 28mm f1.8. I don't think that his is a terrible lens though, it is actually a very sharp lens (from f2.8 on up), with very solid metal construction - it does not have feel or weight of a cheap plastic lens, it's just that my particular needs for it were very demanding and it didn't meet them so I had to return it. But if you'll usually be shooting in daylight situations and/or not in fast-paced environments, or you'll be manually focusing then this lens is very good for the money because of it's very generous f1.8 aperture, very solid construction, and mostly because it's just a very sharp lens when not shot wide open.

If you have a canon kiss, T2i, T3i, T4i, 7D or 60D for video You have to buy it. In a 1.6 crop really is a 32mm with a 72° wide angle and f.1.8, you can't found a similar lens in market . I'm planning to use this sigma with the new Black Magic cinema. In 2.2 crop factor i think that is a decent wide angle lens.

Great lens for candid shots of your family, even under low light. Equally great for environmental portraits, street photography, and of course, landscapes. Has a very good MFD for close up shots.
Focus is slower and noisier than Canon, but easy to live with.
This is the fastest full frame lens available at this focal length (UWA)..! It gets you the shots that no other lens can.
              - All this for a reasonable price..!

              I absolutely LOVE this lens.

Comments about Sigma Super W/A 20mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF RF AF Lens:

I was shooting real estate videos with a borrowed Canon 16-35 F2.8 II on a 5D II and found it to be soft, especially at 2.8 and 18mm. Not great. So the lens hunt was on since I had this great client on the line. I thought a prime would be better/sharper but needed something around 18-20 that could shoot 2.8 or less. That's when I read the review on the Canon 20mm non L lens. It was not great sounding either. So then I found the Sigma 20mm and read it wasn't great below F2.8 but that it was clear at that value. Key point CLEAR at F2.8. So I bought it and I use this lens for real estate and it exceeds the 16-35 at the wide low light level. I use this lens more than any other as it's like a macro you can get so close to objects creating addictive fun images as well as great landscape photos day or night! Awesome lens! It's loud focusing but I tell people it's because it's tough, must have planetary gears in it like a bed truck. Hence the 10 year warranty in Canada. They get lost in the 10yr warranty part with big eyes and open mouths. I use it for video and it works awesome for that but not as well as my 50mm F1.2 L of course, however offers similar bokeh for that cinematic look. It's not a portrait lens so it doesn't really compare to the 50. For $ it's a steal. It does compare to the Canon 24 F1.4L and well......It's NOT a Canon 24 F1.4L for sure but it's 1/3 the price and it's wider by a lot! 4mm doesn't seem like a lot but somehow it is. Way wider then my kit lens at 24mm (24-105) and at F1.8 it's stupid fast compared to the 4. It takes brighter landscape pics in total darkness then my Canon 50 F1.2 but not as clear. However under certain circumstances the sigma has the more desired image as one can see more detail and colour, just don't blow it up too much. Given all values the same eg. F2.2 same ISO and Shutter speeds. I recommend this lens as a filler lens between Canon 14 F2.8 and 24 F1.4 although not as sharp as these two it's clearer at F2.8 then any of the Canon F2.8 wide lenses and if you need the exact focal length or close like I did. This lens is a no brainer. Just buy it!

Comments about Sigma Super W/A 20mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF RF AF Lens:

A little soft fully wide open but fine for my video needs on Canon 60D and 7D. The low light ability makes it a great investment in your lens kit if you can afford to add it. I think it's the best deal out there for a low light prime wide.

I've used the lens for wide vistas, small airplane interiors, and dolly shots. I'm very happy with the results. It's allowed me to get shots with my 5DMII which I could not accomplish without this lens.

Comments about Sigma Super W/A 20mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF RF AF Lens:

I just purchased this lens to use with my Canon 7D for primarily steadicam and dolly work. The wideness of the angle and the low light capabilities make it a very versatile piece of glass. The minimum focusing distacne is also a great plus. Being that I use it for mostly video I did not get a chance to test the speed of the auto focus. The only negative is a slightly soft focus, and little range between foacl points. Other than that, it is well built

I use this lens mostly for steadicam and dolly work using a Canon 7D. The lens provides a nice wide angle considering the cropped frame of the 7D. I also like that the lens has a very minimal focusing distance. The lens could be a little more sharp, and could use a little more range between focal lenghts. Having said that, I would definitely recommend this lens due to it's versatility.

Comments about Sigma Super W/A 20mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF RF AF Lens:

I tried out 4 different lenses at B&H in New York in the range of 20-28 mm. This one has the most bang for it's buck. On the downside, it adds a lot of weight to your Camera, but this is due to the quality of the build and glass inside. It has incredible sharpness, a perfect cylindrical bokeh, very beneficial aperture range(up to 1.8) and it allows you to get as close to your subject as you would like. For those with cropped sensors like myself. It gives you a wonderful true 40 mm equivalent focal length. However. It does have a quick adjust for AF and MF that is not totally compatible with the canon, or atleast my 60D. It's not a downfall for the lens, but it would be cool if it worked well.

I bought this lens as an economical wide-angle for my Canon 5D MkII as it was priced dramatically under a comparable L-series fast wide angle prime. It gives a wide view angle alright, one with a LOT of optical distortion, more than the lens preset in Lightroom could correct for most of the test shots I took. The image quality and clarity, even at f/22 just isn't up to par with what a 5D can produce with better glass in front of the sensor. And as other people have indicated, the autofocus is both very slow and noisy. All in all a major disappointment. This lens is now destined for an online auction, hopefully I can recoup enough of my cash outlay to put towards an L-series wide angle prime in the not-too-distant future. If you don't have a full-frame DSLR and need a super wide angle prime on a budget maybe this lens won't be as big a letdown. I accept I made a mistake by trying to put [...] tires on a Ferrari, to mangle a metaphor.
