Domke Film Guard Bag (X-Ray), Mini - Holds 9 Rolls of 35mm Film

You Pay: $18.99

Designed to protect unprocessed film from harmful X-rays during airport security and customs checks. Lead-lined bags also protect other sensitive media from the low-dosage X-ray machines used in airports around the world. Without FilmGuard, unprocessed film can become fogged or streaked. Use FilmGuard in carry-on luggage, bacause checked luggage is exposed to high-dosage X-rays that FilmGuard cannot protect against.

FilmGuard bags were tested for effectiveness by InVision Technologies, Inc., manufacturers of the only Federal Aviation Administration-approved checked-luggage scanning system. Films with up to ISO 800 speeds were tested. The extensive tests showed that the FilmGuard design will protect film and disks from the low-dosage x-ray units used to check carry-on luggage. (The tests also showed that the amount of lead needed to protect film from high-dosage x-ray units would make the bags too heavy to be practical.)

Triple-layer construction also keeps dust and moisture out: lead-impregnated vinyl sheet sandwiched between an outer shell of ballistic nylon and interior lining of smooth lining. Available in three sizes, in black only.

Size Available in three sizes:
  • Mini FilmGuard - Holds nine 35mm film cassettes or a small camera: 5.25 x 8" (13 x 20cm)
  • Small FilmGuard - Holds fifteen rolls of 35mm film or small camera with a few rolls: 9.5 x 8" (24 x 20cm)
  • Large FilmGuard - Holds thirty-five rolls of 35mm film, or three 50-sheet boxes of 4x5" film, or small camera with a few rolls: 10.5 x 12" (27 x 31cm)

Comments about Domke Film Guard Bag, Mini - Holds 9 Rolls of 35mm Film:

despite what people at customs say, and sometimes they even paste stickers at the x-rays stating that they're "film safe", x-ray machine are not. they always submit the film to a certain dosage of radiation – light exposure. if you expose two, or even three times a 400 asa film – the one I use – you won't notice it. but it doesn't mean it hasn't been exposed. I've tested this many times, with all number of passes, and I can guaranty that if you pass your film through x-ray machines your film more than 4 times – in my case it happens most of the times I travel – it will be noticeable. I'm being soft here. it can ruin your film.

traveling with film throughout the years had become a source not only of frustration but also of anxiety for me. spoiled rolls and the never-ending concern with the film pre and during the trips, to the point that I realized that it was just not worth it. in the beginning of '14 I ended up buying an used M9 mainly to travel and then leave my leica mp at home.

so it happens that I had already the mini and the medium domke since january but never used it. but the m9 failed on me last month. two weeks ago, april '14, I decided to travel with the MP and the domke bag with Ilford XP2 already twice exposed to x-rays that I've brought in bulk from a trip. I couldn't expose them anymore to x-rays.

the trip was a breeze! the x-rays didn't mind the bag. I purposely left them inside the carry on, and they didn't ask me to show the bag. They did ask me to show the Leica MP, once is all metal. It'd already happened more than once. But not the bag.

It was a relieve know that I'm able to travel with film again secure and with peace of mind.

Comments about Domke Film Guard Bag, Mini - Holds 9 Rolls of 35mm Film:

As with other my Domke purchases this bag is just as durable. Taking films through customs (in hand luggage) was fine and I would recommend this for any film based regular flyer.

Comments about Domke Film Guard Bag, Mini - Holds 9 Rolls of 35mm Film:

I travel fairly often and like to protect my valuable exposed film from x-rays. The film guard does a great job at protecting my film from fogging. The bag looks well built and I expect it to last for years. I'll probably buy another one in order to separate unexposed and exposed film more easily.

Used this for a roll of 400 color film, and the pictures turned out fine (no fogging or streaking). It must have raised some flags in the x-ray though, security had to dig it out of my carry-on and examine it after it went through. Next time I'll try putting it in one of the trays.

As a medium format enthusiast, this bag is fantastic for me. With some careful packing, it will hold 10 rolls of 120, far more than what I use on a trip. It's not the easiest to access with things packed so tightly, but once you're through security you can unpack it and store it normally in your bag. This is a great quality product and will last for a lifetime.

First off, I bought this bag to run experiments with radioactive materials like tiny Czech beads and tiny pieces of minerals. Basically, I wanted to prove that a geiger counter worked and that the radiation could be significantly blocked. The bag did not block all radiation but the amount getting through was greatly reduced. The bad is nicely made and aesthetic.

Comments about Domke Film Guard Bag, Mini - Holds 9 Rolls of 35mm Film:

I now have two of these handy protective bags, and use them when traveling to keep film safe from x-ray checks, not only in airports but also at hotels now. I use two bags to separate film types (color and low-speed B/W in one, and higher speed (ISO 400) in the other. As use the file, then one bag becomes the holder for exposed film and the other for ready to use rolls. The bags do add weight, but are worth it to have film safe from fogging/streaking.
