The 58mm Close-Up Kit from Hoya permits your lens to focus closer than normal. Imagine that you could put a magnifying glass in front of your camera's lens. Close-up lenses work in this fashion and are the simplest and least expensive method of close-up photography. They are available in different "powers" (diopters). A +1 close-up lens will allow you to focus your lens somewhat closer than it already does. A +2 close-up lens will allow you to focus closer than the +1. A +4 lens will allow you to focus even closer than a +2. A +1 combined with a +2 will equal a +3, while a +2 combined with a +4 will equal a +6, and so on.
The maximum magnification achieved with these attachments will depend on the focal length of your lens as well as the actual close focusing capability of that particular lens. They are multi-coated to minimize reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting. When using these filters, either together or separately, your depth of field becomes quite shallow. Whenever possible, use of a small aperture will produce better results. In addition, as a result of the shallow depth of field produced by these filters, use of a tripod is strongly recommended to avoid "shake" and "blur" when photographing up close.
Hoya is one of the largest manufacturers of glass in the filter industry. In collaboration with its parent company, Tokina Optical, Hoya continues to strive to produce some of the best glass on the market. Currently, they hold 40% of the world's market for optical glass.
The advantage of most Hoya filters is that Hoya puts, at least, one layer of anti-reflective coating on each side of their glass. It is not bare glass. Even if the glass is not multi-coated, this kind of production tends to minimize flare and ghosting.

The "macro" setting of the basic camera isn't very useful for nature work, because it must be used at wide angle, limiting magnification, and the working distance is so close that the subject is often in your own shadow. With the close-up lenses screwed onto the Canon lens adaptor, focus is possible at full telephoto setting and the working distance is increased several fold. Image quality is excellent, rivalling that of dedicated macro lenses for SLR cameras. Highly recommended.

The quality of the rings is excellent.
Having multiple focal ratios let you experiment by combining them.
Need to close the apperture on long focal objectives to get a clear image (requires strong light or long exposure).
Limited magnification on standard objective.

Comments about Hoya 58mm Close-Up Kit (Multi-Coated):
I am not a professional photographer, but I do like to make photos that have some life to them, and great detail. I use this kit mostly on insects and flowers, and whatever else comes along that suits my fancy. these close-up lenses do a remarkable job, and the price is right for what I do. I certainly would recommend them to a friend.

Comments about Hoya 58mm Close-Up Kit (Multi-Coated):
I purchased this kit to use with my Rebel T3i and the kit 18-55mm lens. Contrary to most photographers, I like to shoot close-up food shots with a wide lens. With the #4 diopter I can do just that, visually embracing an object about 5" wide, edge to edge. The glass is clean and clear.

Love this set. I bought this to get a feel for macro and they do well, but they leave you wanting that dedicated macro lens. Perfect size, easy to carry.

This close-up kit is fun to play with. I think if you are really into macro a dedicated lense would be a better choice, but for those wanting to experiment a little before investing in a lense, these are great and it comes with three so you have some choices.

I use this kit on my canon 100mm macro lens and produces the result as advertised. The Images are sharp. I give 5 stars becoz it's no worth comparing apple and orange and pays for it's suppose to deliver.
The down side is, this kit is of no good use at wide aperture end. Specially when you use +1+2+4 you've to get as close as to 5 finger distance to the subject and works well only with static subjects. Using tripod is a must. I cannot think it'd work well for macro insect photography.

Decades ago, I used screw-in close-up lenses. While it may be low-tech compared to a true macro lens, it offers an easy option to increase magnification while maintaining reasonable quality. It also maintains maximum aperature, unlike extension tubes.

Research how these work before buying them, otherwise you may end up not liking them. You have to get closer to the subject with the filters, and telephoto lenses work better than your daily use lenses.
