The 67mm Close-Up Kit from Hoya permits your lens to focus closer than normal. Imagine that you could put a magnifying glass in front of your camera's lens. Close-up lenses work in this fashion and are the simplest and least expensive method of close-up photography. They are available in different "powers" (diopters). A +1 close-up lens will allow you to focus your lens somewhat closer than it already does. A +2 close-up lens will allow you to focus closer than the +1. A +4 lens will allow you to focus even closer than a +2. A +1 combined with a +2 will equal a +3, while a +2 combined with a +4 will equal a +6, and so on.

The maximum magnification achieved with these attachments will depend on the focal length of your lens as well as the actual close focusing capability of that particular lens. They are multi-coated to minimize reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting. When using these filters, either together or separately, your depth of field becomes quite shallow. Whenever possible, use of a small aperture will produce better results. In addition, as a result of the shallow depth of field produced by these filters, use of a tripod is strongly recommended to avoid "shake" and "blur" when photographing up close.

Hoya is one of the largest manufacturers of glass in the filter industry. In collaboration with its parent company, Tokina Optical, Hoya continues to strive to produce some of the best glass on the market. Currently, they hold 40% of the world's market for optical glass.

The advantage of most Hoya filters is that Hoya puts, at least, one layer of anti-reflective coating on each side of their glass. It is not bare glass. Even if the glass is not multi-coated, this kind of production tends to minimize flare and ghosting.

Close-up filters are the least expensive way to achieve macro photography
The resulting shallow depth of field requires use of a tripod to ensure the image remains sharp
Hoya multi-coating provides an average light transmission of over 97%
Multi-coating produces sharper contrast and well-balanced color

Just screw it on your lens, and you can focus much closer than normally, you can combine the close-up filters to get even closer, but then you have more glass in front of your lens. Much cheaper than dedicated macro lens, but even if I own one, it is still nice to have these filters. I use them on wideangle lens as well and also with my medium format gear for which there is no dedicated macro lens.

I've been experimenting with macro photography lately and I didn't want to buy an expensive lens before I had some idea what I was doing so I tried some close up filters. To give the filters a fair shot, I decided to buy a good one and I got a Canon 500D. I put it on my lens and all the pictures were unusable (tons of haloing, a mist effect, and objects out of focus except at the very center of the lens) so I quit using these filters for a while. Then I put the Canon filter on a different lens and it made good pictures a lot of the time. Since the Canon filter didn't fit the lens I wanted to use and these filters were very inexpensive I decided to take a risk and bought them. Here is the result. I don't know why close up filters work sometimes and not others, but these work just as good as the much more expensive Canon filter. About 30% of the time they don't seem to degrade the picture at all. The rest of the time they have the same problems listed above to varying degrees. The higher the diopter, the worse the problem gets, but I have perfect pictures with the highest diopter. You can stack them like they say, but that makes your odds worse and if you stack the all three of them there no hope. I use these on a Canon 70-300 L and generally I only take the 2 diopter with me. That reduces my minimum focus distance from about 4 ft t about 10 inches and gives me a 50/50 chance of getting a good picture. So, I guess you weigh the risks and determine if these are the right choice for you. I use them quite a bit and I haven't gotten a macro lens so they must be doing something right. Something else to consider is these are much easier to carry and much easier to change off than a dedicated lens.

I wanted good, but not over-the-top close up lenses. I'm not a pro, so these are perfect for me. They are simple, stackable, and durable. They are easy-on, easy-off, fit in my bag just fine, and are there for all the bug-on-a-flower shots I like to take. They are exactly what I wanted.

These are fine filters like the other reviews have said. One suggestion: buy a bigger filter than you actually need and use step-up adapter rings. They are inexpensive and someday you may have a new lens bigger than you have now.

                    Comments about Hoya 67mm Close-Up Kit (Multi-Coated):

This set of lenses is an inexpensive alternative to purchasing a macro lens. The field of view is limited but it allows you to obtain decent close-up shots of small objects. Image quality is good when I used them with a Canon 70-300mm L lens. The images were sharp and there was little loss of light. The other advantage to this set of lenses is that they screw onto a lens the same as you would attach a filter, which makes it easy to carry them and use them without switching lenses.

The close-up filters are great inexpensive way to focus in on close-up detailed product shots in my studio or on location. I wasn't really prepared to purchase a macro lense, so this was an affordable option for right now. And they came with a very nice protective case! I'm always pleased with the products and prices I get from B&H. Thank you!

I purchased this close-up kit to complement an excellent fixed lens camera. At all combinations, including stacking, the image is tack sharp in the center, but distortion creeps in at the edges with a slight-to-noticeable purple fringe.

Does the job and is inexpensive.

Somewhat useful for macro photography, but don't expect it to be as sharp as a dedicated macro lens. Overall a cheap, decent way to start taking macros.

These close-up lenses are excellent with sturdy construction and the multi-coating essentially eliminates ghosting and aberrations. The units screw on freely unlike other cheaper units. Without a doubt - the best value in a close-up set. Highly recommended - the results are terrific.
