I shot two tripod mounted, test images using the AF-S 300 f4. One without the TC-14E II and one with. The images were cropped in CS-4, so image size would be the same. Distance to subject was approx. 30ft. "WITHOUT" was recorded @ ISO 400, f4 @ 1/500. "WITH" was recorded @ ISO 400, f5.6 @ 1/125.

I make no judgement as to comparable resolution, contrast, saturation, etc. You can judge for yourself. I, however, am satisfied with both.

I use this on the Nikkor 300mm f/4 af-s lens, and have had it on for more than 5 months. The images it is able to produce with this combination are sharp, but there is a considerable image quality depletion as when the teleconverter is not mounted on the lens, which is expected.

I primarily shoot birds, and for bird in flight, it just can't focus fast enough to get good keeper rate ratios. I also find that once it focuses on subjects that are more than 20 feet away it is hard to get sharp images, especially birds in flight.

If you are looking to increase your keeper rate by getting closer to the subject, than this may help you out, but not by much compared to the 300mm without it in my opinion.

For now though I will use it when shooting smaller birds and such but I am saving my money up for the 500mm f/4.

Comments about Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses ONLY:

I expect to lose a bit of resolution using a teleconverter but to my surprise this one performed very well on my 80 - 400 VR lens with a D7100. In good light at less than the max focal length, you have to look pretty hard to see a difference caused by using the TC. At 400mm in low light, focussed on a small object far away (like a bird's eye) the percentage of keepers isn't that high but then again, it isn't that high just using the lens without a TC under those conditions. I have been pleasantly surprised especially after reading some of the other reviews where it seems there were some sample quality problems. I didn't experience any of those. I used the TC a bit at home mostly shooting birds then took it to South Africa on a safari for the real test. I was very pleased with the results. I had no problems with autofocus on the D7100. Not as good as a 600mm lens I'm sure, but it's only a fraction of the price. I would definitely buy this TC again; in fact, I'm considering buying the 1.7 after my experience with the 1.4. I have to note that it does make a rattling noise like a part is lose (it is) when it isn't attached to a lens - that was a bit alarming, but I googled it and found out that it isn't a problem, that it is designed that way.

Use this to photograph birds of prey and others. Use it with the new version Nikon 80-400 lens and D 7100. Main drawback is that it slows the usual quick to find autofocus of birds in flight, but I guess that goes with the territory.

Plan to use the 1.4x teleconvertor with my 70-200 f2.8 zoom. Have used this lens with a 400mm f2.8 lense and did not see any degradation of image quality. Also plan on purchasing a 300 mm f2.8 for use with the 1.4x teleconvertor for increased reach. Own a 2x teleconvertor and works well when you use it in combination with a great lense and use long lense focusing techniques.

This is my second TC-14E II. The first one was bent out of shape when I dropped the 500mm f4 vr attached to it. It is a great way to get closer to the birds and other animals, reduces the f stop by one, but provides great sharpness on all lenses.

Comments about Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses ONLY:

I have been using this with an A-FS Nikkor 200-400mm IF ED VR on a D7100. Focusing is fast, EXIF data and camera report correct aperture. VR hums a bit, but works quite well - on or off the tripod. Pictures are sharp and exposure in either manual or matrix are correct. I don't see any significant degradation in performance or picture quality. Any loss in sharpness I found was with my technique (lack thereof) with the even greater magnification. Still working on that, but tripod shots are tack sharp and color is excellent.

I tried my Sigma 1.4x teleconverter with the same lens. The camera and exif did not report correctly, definite loss of sharpness and frequently hunted for focus. Likely the loss of sharpness was due to poor auto focus. I did not spend much time trying to get the combo to work.

Comments about Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses ONLY:

I bought this teleconverter specifically hoping it would work with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens. I knew it would not work with the older version of this lens but some of Nikon's (conflicting) documentation said it would work with the new lens ... with caveats.

As it turns out, it works well and does give you that little bit of extra reach for photos of wildlife, making the longest effective focal length to be about 550mm. The price, of course, is that the lens now has a maximum f-stop of f8 at the long end. In the bright sun, however, it is useful.

                    Details:

                    1. The teleconverter fits mechanically. It does not fit all lenses because the lens elements of the teleconverter protrude beyond the mounting. Nikon warns not to use this teleconverter with any lens that is not listed in the instructions. The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is not one of those lenses listed BUT the lens documentation says it works and it does.

                    2. The resulting combination does make a darker image in the viewfinder but it isn't much darker. Moreover, in the situations you would use this unit (daylight) the darkening is not at all a problem.

                    3. The autofocus and autoexposure work well. I have included an example photo with this review.

                    4. VR works. I have not tested this much but it does function. I have been taking test shots with a beanbag to remove that variable. I wanted to see how well the focus and exposure worked ... and to see if there was much degradation in the image.

                    5. The images are pretty good ! I use a Nikon D800 so I can see the flaws pretty easily. I am still in the early stages of using this device but the images I have seen so far look good. The attached images are an example.

The images. I took the attached photo at mid-day and the subject was about 100 ft away. The effective focal length was 550mm. I used a beanbag to support the camera but otherwise relied on the autofocus and autoexposure.

This was a casual test. I just let the camera do what it thought it should. The first image is the full frame. The second image is considerably enlarged, as is easy to see. The enlarged image is pretty good. There is some softness at the edges but it was a windy day and this IS a considerable enlargement. I tried a bit of sharpening in photoshop and the result looks perfect. If there were provisions to provide another image I would have included that too. The images I have presented here are not processed.

Comments about Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses ONLY:

Works well on Nikkor 300mm f/4 lens. Yields sharp images with no loss of quality but reduces exposure by one f stop. It attaches easily to the lens but not a smoothly as I would have anticipated. Autofocus is not affected in any way.

Comments about Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses ONLY:

I use it with the Nikkor 500mm VR for birding. This combination yields effective 700mm on a full frame body. This combination is lighter than the Nikkor 600mm I used to use earlier. Wide open shots are of poor quality and. With the TC-14E II, the effective aperture is f/5.6 and I need to stop at least to f/7.1 or f/8 for decent quality.

I bought this to go along with my Nikkor 300mm f/4D ED IF. I also plan to use it with my other Nikon lenses. It is a great addition to my lens collection.

Want to get the best quality telephoto lens for under [$]? Get the 70-200 f/2.8 Nikon VR II and add the 1.4x and you are sitting pretty under f/4 for under $[$]Compare and contrast that to the big, sexy (and expensive) Nikon 300mm f/2.8 for $5,500 and this duo is a bargain. Perfect for bird watching and remove it and you have the best 70-200 in the biz. If you've never used a teleconverter before it retains all the normal features of your Nikkor lenses, weighs nothing and is small enough to carry in your bag full-time or your pocket if you need that extra 1 f stop. Mated with a D800 the 1.4x and my VR II 70-200mm is very fast and captures excellent birding photos. Winner and I don't have to spring for the big 300mm. I have also used this with the f/2.8 VR 300mm expensive monster for an effective 420m beast and you can see through buildings. Its almost too long for birding as you lose the versatility of the 70-200 to find and zoom in on your subject.

I purchased this teleconverter for use on a Nikon D7100 with a 300mm f/2.8 Nikon lens. After 2 days of use I was quite surprised to find how many of the photos I had taken with the teleconverter were not sharp in comparison to other photos taken when I did not use the teleconverter. From the number of positive reviews posted on this teleconverter, I can only conclude that I received a bad one. It is disappointing that Nikon does not have better quality control considering how much their gear costs. B&H was great, paying for the return shipment and giving me a complete refund.

Comments about Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses ONLY:

Primarily used with the 600mm f4, but also with the 70-200 2.8 and 105mm macro. Fantastic on all lenses. Did not see any image degradation on any of the lenses to speak of. An essential piece of gear in my opinion.
