The Nikon TC-14E II Teleconverter has been updated to match with AF-S type lenses, and will maintain full metering and focusing with compatible cameras and lenses. This converter will increase the focal length of the lens by 1.4x, and reduces the lens aperture by one f-stop.
Note! Autofocusing only possible when used with D1, D1X, D1H, D100, F5, F100, N90s, N80, N75, N65 AF SLR cameras, and any newer models.
Please note that Nikons DLSRs featuring f/8 AF support may allow autofocus with lens/teleconverter combinations that are not currently listed as being 'compatible'.

I've been using it with a 300 f/4 AF-S lens on a D7000. Though it is a bit slower combo than I'd like (the maximum aperture is f/5.6 with the TC b/c of a loss of one stop), image quality doesn't suffer. I've photographed birds, and as long as you have enough light (or high enough ISO) to get a fast enough shutter speed at 5.6, you can get very sharp, clear images.
Is it the same as using a 200-400 lens? No - that lens is very fast and uber-sharp, especially at shorter distances. But it also costs more than twice as much as the entire camera+lens+tc kit I have. I have no doubt it'll work even better with faster teles, but makes for a very nice budget tele package when coupled w/ the 300/4.
I also own a 70-300 VRII lens but stopped using it once I bought the 300 f/4 as it is not as critically sharp (in my view, YMMV)- and I think the combination (basically an f/8 w/ a tc) is too slow to be useful for anything but static landscapes.

My passion is nature photography and this is what I do to relax. I purchased the TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter to help my 500mm f4 reach out a little further. My AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E II is sharper then this one. Shooting objects at a distance the images are not sharp at all but shooting something up close I can't tell any difference with or without it. I have used a friends TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter and the images I obtained were very sharp and very clean at about 150 yards. This one is no good past 20 yards. I guess I got a bad one and I'm very disappointed. I ordered the USA version and I'm not even sure that is what I received because "Nikon USA" is nowhere to be found on the Teleconverter, paperwork, or the box. I have always been happy with Nikon after 7 years of dedicated use and this is the first time they have let me down.

I use this with the Nikon 300mm F4 lens on the Nikon D600 and the Nikon D300s for wildlife. Quality is excellent and it maintains full metering and focusing as stated.

Comments about Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses ONLY:
Pairs very well with my Nikon 300mm f4 AFS lens. I see no visible difference in image quality (sharpness, color, contrast) when using the lens with and without the 1.4x teleconverter. The only obvious downside is that it slows the lens down to f5.6 from f4, a reasonable trade-off for the extra reach.

Comments about Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses ONLY:
This piece of equipment is exclusively for my 200-400 f/4 zoom. For the most part it feels like it always belonged on this lens, it produces crisp images from f5.6 and upwards, does not impede on the weight factor, gives me the stretch I want with both D800 and D300 cameras. I can take this extender as a confident addition to my arsenal of lenses to any project. I would highly recommend this piece of glass for this lens and the 70-200mm f/2.8.

Comments about Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses ONLY:
I bought this to couple with the AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens and it is an excellent pairing. Setting my D800E to DX format, gives the same field of view as a 825 mm lens when zooming out to 400mm. I do not yet see any reduction in sharpness, though my use has been limited to date. It reduces the lens to f/8 but for my applications, I do not find this to be a problem.

Comments about Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses ONLY:
I shot two tripod mounted, test images using the AF-S 300 f4. One without the TC-14E II and one with. The images were cropped in CS-4, so image size would be the same. Distance to subject was approx. 30ft. "WITHOUT" was recorded @ ISO 400, f4 @ 1/500. "WITH" was recorded @ ISO 400, f5.6 @ 1/125.
I make no judgement as to comparable resolution, contrast, saturation, etc. You can judge for yourself. I, however, am satisfied with both.

Excellent if you can't afford longer glass, with IQ loss minimal. I use with a 300mm f2.8, turning into a 420mm f4.

Comments about Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses ONLY:
I've had the teleconverter and 300mm f4 combo for a couple of weeks. The 300mm is everything I expected, beautifully sharp and clear. The teleconverter however is not performing well at all. Some of the other reviewers here seem to be having the same problem. Up close the images are fine but at distances of a few hundred meters the image quality is awful. I've set the D7000 on a tripod, used the mirror lock up and a cable release to avoid motion, prefocused to prevent any vibration and still have fuzzy images. This isn't subtle so I suspect I'd be happy with the units the happy reviewers have and they would be unhappy with this one. Sounds like loose quality control to me. I'll be trying to get a replacement after which maybe I'll see the other side of the problem. Sure hope so!

I bought the TC-14E II 1.4x TC to go with my new 80-400mm f4.5-5.6 AF-S lens. Great combo, the initial teting I've done show nice sharp crisp results. I don't see any added artifacts or grain when using this TC. With the D-7100 I have on the way I'll have f8 autofocus with 24MP at 168-840mm with the above lens & this convertor. Good nature combo.

I bought the TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter to use with my Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 lens to get extra reach when needed. As with most Nikon products it is of excellent quality and build and does exactly what is supposed to do. It maintains the clarity of the lens slightly better than the 1.7 teleconverter.

Comments about Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses ONLY:
5 Stars because the TC-14E meets nikon's spec. regarding operation on the 300F4 and 80-200F2.8 on D600 and D7000 without significant loss in IQ. .
However, keep in mind the 1.4x halves the amount of light getting to your sensor and this is VERY noticeable especially on a slow lens like the 300F4. This is not a fault of the extender, this is a given. Of course you can jack up the ISO, but noise reduction software is not a panacea. One way or the other, you lose. Some times the loss is tolerable, sometimes not.
Non-scientific analysis (warning; entirely subjective): Image quality of the TC-14E + 300F4 on a D600 is still better than the 300 without converter on a D7000. You end up with about the same sharpness, about the same magnification and no evil artifacts. In other words, there is very little IQ degradation all things being equal.
Observation: Some folks mention using the 1.4 as a dust seal on the 300F4 (no rear element) and 'leaving it on there all the time'. First, the 1 stop loss really does handicap the lens in low light and makes hand holding much less viable, and from a practical standpoint, the 300 won't fit in its case with the 1.4x attached.
However, the TC-14II does exactly what is it supposed to do, and if your expectations are not over-inflated, it is hard to fault. The extra reach is very useful.

I have used the teleconverter with my 300 AFS f/4 and the new 70-200 AFS VR f/4 and neither lens has shown any difference in autofocus with or without the teleconverter. The images look to be sharp from the center out to the edges. I'm pleasantly impressed with the quality of the images and glad that I made the purchase.

In combination with 70-200VRII provides a useful extra bit of reach (98-280 equivalent) while keeping a reasonable near focus distance. Also use the TC-17E-II with this lens, and found it was a bit much for some indoor shots. First tests show no significant loss of sharpness or contrast. Focus is still fast and accurate. Saves packing a longer lens when shooting events where I need to carry all my gear on my shoulders for the day.

I bought this to extend my 300mm f2.8 especially for shooting Soccer and Football. I shoot all of my sports wide open and this only drops me down to just under f4. I haven't done a lot with it yet but am looking forward to it over the next two weekends.
