Due to its light pink color, the Hoya Skylight (1B) reduces the bluish cast of daylight and produces a pleasing, warmer picture tone. Wise initial investments, they help protect your lens from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.

Multicoated to minimize reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting.

If desired they can be left on at all times for protection
Skylight filters provide additional benefits of correction for Ultraviolet(UV) light which can register on film and videotape as a bluish cast and can obscure distant details
Also used to reduce the bluish cast common with some electronic flash units

Comments about Hoya 58mm Skylight 1B (HMC) Multi-Coated Glass Filter:

If you intend to put a protective filter on the front of your expensive lens, you would be well advised to put the highest quality Muti-coated filter on your lens. Not only will the filter protect the glass of your lens but a top quality filter such as the Hoya Multi-coated glass filter will enhance the clarity and contrast of your photos. The coatings on Hoya filters are fused to the filter under high heat. Whereas a cheaper filter my use a stick on film instead of a fused multi-coating.

Comments about Hoya 58mm Skylight 1B (HMC) Multi-Coated Glass Filter:

All the lenses for my Pentax 645N have skylight filters for protection. I mostly shoot Fuji Provia color slide film and I find a Skylight 1B helps reduce any blue/purple casts in certain light conditions.

I use Hoya filters a lot, they are inexpensive and of good quality. Not much to go wrong.

                    Creates artefacts in low light

Comments about Hoya 58mm Skylight 1B (HMC) Multi-Coated Glass Filter:

I thought my Canon 50mm f1.4 had an optical issue, and was about to take it in when I decided to try taking the filter off. Sure enough, it was the Hoya filter which was creating artefacts when shooting with a bright light in the frame.

This was especially noticeable at night. For instance, taking a photo with a street light in the frame. A "ghost" artefact of that light would appear on the inverse opposite side of the picture. So, if the light source was near the top right, an artefact would appear at the bottom left.

This phenomonem was only noticeable at night, so shooting with this filter during the day is great. Bottom line: this is NOT a 24/7 filter for the Canon 50mm if you plan on ever using it in low light situations...

I keep this filter on my zoom lens, not only did it do a great job, it saved my lens when it got hit. The filter broke but protected the lens. I bought this replacement right away!

The Skylight 1B is more effective in reducing the UV and blue than the Skylight 1A or a standard UV filter, especially at higher altitudes. It give a very slight warming effect.

I have never had a Hoya product that wasn't built to the best quality. If Hoya offers the products I always feel confident with the purchase. With this filter I mainly wanted protection for my lenses and this skylight lense provides that.
