The MT-24EX is a twin-flash set-up (similar to a ringflash) for the EOS system that has every feature and capability imaginable. Employing Canon's E-TTL, it takes full advantage of the flash performance of the EOS-1V, EOS-3, and other E-TTL supported cameras by allowing for shutter speeds above the normal sync range. Twin flashes fire at even power, or can be varied over an eight-stop range for dramatic directional lighting that emphasizes the relief of the subject. One or more 580EX, 550EX, 430 EX, or 420EX Speedlites can be used as wireless slaves along with the MT-24EX. The controller unit has an illuminated, informative LCD panel. Accepts optional hi-capacity battery packs.

Ratio Control
Manual mode permits variable power from full to 1/64th
E-TTL
Wireless autoflash is capable in conjunction with one or more 580EX or 550EX flashes
Direct attachment
EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro, EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro (non-IS version), and MP-E 65mm Macrophoto lenses require no adapters. The EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM is usable via Macrolite Adapter 72C, and EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM via use of Macrolite Adapter 67. Or can be used with other lenses with the use of a matching Macrolite adapter.

I owned Canon's Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX and later replaced it with the Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite. I have taken thousands of close-up pics with both, so this review will assist those considering both these options.

These flash units are essential if you are a serious about macro photography. You will be using these units for one of the following reasons:

    • As a primary light source when there is insufficient ambient light for sharp images or to obtain good depth of field.

    • As a primary light source to create a 'black background' around the macro subject, a look unnatural to my eye but liked by some.

    • In bright sunlight/high shadow conditions as fill-flash to create more even light and reduce contrast.

The Twin Lite MT-24EX is a better solution to the Ring Lite MR-14EX in nearly all respects, as follows:

    • The dual, directed light sources create subtle shadows and a more natural and pleasing three dimensional effect. The Ring Lite MR-14EX on the other hand produces a comparatively flat looking image.

    • The MT-24EX can project light some distance, well beyond the range of the MR-14EX. There will often be times, for example when after taking a close-up of the flower of some shaded forest herb one will want to shoot a little further back to frame a larger part of the plant. The MT-24EX is superbly versatile in this respect, whereas if you have the MR-14EX attached to your lens, at this stage you will often have a problem, as it may not project light far enough to obtain a well exposed image.

The MR-14EX is only slightly superior to the MT-24EX in one aspect, namely that for close up work it emits a more diffuse light which can be preferable when some subjects are comprised of pale or pastel colours (such as white or mauve flowers).

If you can afford it, the MT-24EX is to be much preferred. It does what the MR-14EX does at extreme close up, provides a more pleasing, three dimensional image, and is versatile enough to transit between close-up and greater distance photography between shots, which is a major advantage and convenience.

The MT-24EX with its E-TTL functionality produces consistently well exposed images, and the control unit interface allows for tweaking of light output if one is not quite satisfied with the result.

This product does what any macro photographer needs it to do, namely capture great close-up images. However, there are a few niggles that detract a little from an excellent product.

The control unit is somewhat somewhat bulky and dated, and in need of a refresh (as occurred when the Speedlite 580EX replaced the 550EX some years ago).

The arms that connect the main unit to the lamps can be quite floppy when one uses it on the end of the short EF-S 60 mm macro lens and these can then get in the way during close-up positioning – in this regard the Nikon solution is neater.

The attachment ring is designed for a 52 mm diameter lens whereas Canon's premium macro lens , the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM has a 67 mm diameter. One needs to buy the 67 Macrolite Adapter to ensure compatibility, which is not an optimum solution, partly because the attachment is less secure than the end of a lens.

This flash appears to be very good at providing light in macro situations. It allows powering both lights individually and you can rotate them around the lens (to a point). However, this flash is using noticably older tech than the 580 EXII, which is very quiet, has a better mounting system onto the flash shoe, and offers more custom functions. The MT-24EX feels quite old by comparison.

Finally, this flash will not fit on my 100mm f2.8 IS Macro without an adapter, and when you use the adapter, the flash will not fit on the adapter if you have a lens filter on the adapter. You have to put the lens filter on the front thread of the flash mount. Overall this is very unacceptable. This flash is quite expensive, and given the popularity of the new 100mm IS Macro, this flash should be bundled with the adapter, or better yet, updated to new tech and actually made to fit the new flagship macro.

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Flash:

This is a must have tool for 1:1 macro work, especially with live subjects. The unit is light weight, easy to attach, and easy to adjust. With the latest Canon EOS digital SLRs, the flash provides splendid light using ETTL and the flash exposure compensation adjustments in the camera. The built-in focusing lights of the MT-24EX are a game saver in low light and nighttime shooting situations. I can't wait to see what they do for the much needed updating of this unit. LED focusing lights would be brighter and would save battery life.
All-in-all a terrific unit that is always in my kit.

I use this flash whenever I'm shooting macro. It's a great flash setup. It's very versatile. You have full 360 degree manipulation of the flashes and you can remove them to mount on a stand. You can also fire a third flash with the unit.

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Flash:

I have had this about a week and a half, and I haven't taken it off since I pu t it one. I use it with the Canon 100mm L macro lens and it opens up all kinds of new possibilities. I had played with the idea of getting one that was much less expensive, but in the end decided I wanted the quality, the versitility and the longevity. This Flash is everything I could have hoped for, it meets all my needs and more.

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Flash:

A great way to light up those tricky macro subjects. Previously, I'd used a Canon 580EX II off camera (with spiral cord) to assist in macro flash work. But hand holding the OC flash made it difficult to work with. This unit frees up my hand and allows me to concentrate on the subject.

Great way to light macro subjects. Lots of options to position the heads as well as individual power settings to each head. It is a bit ungainly getting it set up with the cables and brackets and heads. But once mounted, it's good to go.

It does feel just a bit dated construction wise, but hey, light is light.

I highly recommend the sto-fen diffusers. The light is just to harsh without them.

                  I'm pleased.

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Flash:

I bought the 100mm 2.8L macro lens and a Canon extension tube about a year ago. Even in bright daylight, I couldn't get the results that I was hoping for (insects). I just didn't have enough light / speed. I was pretty disappointed and figured, I'd already spent well over a grand, I may as well throw in for a proper flash. If I have ALL the equipment, it then just becomes a matter of skill and technique. I really agonized over spending the additional money - this thing ain't cheap. I'm glad I did. This flash really makes the prior investment seem good.

I don't consider myself a good photographer - just a guy who gets lucky once in a while. I've only had the flash for about a week now and have had one session with it. Right out of the box, my photos have improved dramatically and I couldn't be happier. The attached shots aren't technically good, but I feel like I'm in the ballpark and can't wait to see what I'm doing with this lens and flash combination six months from now. I did by the lens diffuser caps. At this very early stage, my only complaint is that there is no audible signal to tell me the flash has recycled and I'm ready for the next shot. Shooting skittish insects, all your attention is on the subject and you don't have time to look away at the pilot light.

We use this flash to freeze microscopic fibers that move on microscopic objects. The flash allows for sharpness that is beyond compare; however, it doesn't transfer light to the object in the best way possible. This HAS to be tweaked. Significant research and development is needed to properly diffuse the light.

This is a terrific piece of equipment with a lot of built in flexibility. There is one significant catch--if you don't own a Canon macro lens, there are extra conversion parts needed to attach the flash to the lens you do use--and right now, the Canon 58c adapter is not available. Without it, using this is generally a pain. When it finally arrives, I'll probably absolutely love what it helps me do. I shoot flowers and insects on site, so having a flash that stays in place at different angles is critical.

I love the ability to adjust the position of each flash on the ring. The ring itself can rotate to maximize creativity. It was well worth saving for.

Amazing quality. I have owned the MR-14EX and this is just unbelievably better. Just for the option that allows you to control how much light you want makes it all worth.

Decide on the 24ex right a way. I have a EF 180 Macro and the 72mm ring work good.

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Flash:

                                        Pros
                                        - convenient for MP-E65 as its lens length varies
                                        - can be effective at higher magnification
                                        - adjustable mount

                                        Cons
                                        - harsh light, esp from reflective surfaces
                                        - not as suitable for longer length lenses
                                        - cheaper alternatives available
                                        - mounting adapter for Canon 100L costs extra

While a decent flash I could only recommend this flash if it is to be used with the Canon MP-E65. Even then the light can be harsh. On longer macro lenses I'd use an off-camera bracket (with or without the MT24EX heads) to move the flash(es) away from the lens axis.

Couldn't decide between the 24EX versus 14EX...had a hard time justifying the extra $ but in the end bough the 24EX. Glad I did! I'm having a blast with this unit. Superb lighting and the images pop out! Negative: don't really care for the bulky size and hot shoe locking mechanism. I'm sure Canon can improve on this.

Versatile and very adaptable. Expensive, but intricate design is impressive. Everything about this flash is adaptable. Recommend getting the flash diffusers. I'm using it for macro product photography with a 150mm macro lens. A nice accessory would be a separation bar to move the two flash units further apart. Currently hand holding one of the flash units as needed. System works well. Worth the investment.
