I used this tripod for a wedding this past weekend and it worked out great. It is a little on the heavy side, but that is great in my book. It is not so heavy it cannot be carried, but my PD170 is rock solid on top! Head is very smooth and does excellent.

I noticed a lot of reviewers complained about breaking the tighteners for the arms and that the tightener for the pan got in the way. If you will notice, the plastic wing nut will pull away from the nut and allow you to get a small wrench in there to loosen up everything the first time out. Also, if you will pull out the plastic wing nut (you may need to unscrew the end) you can adjust where the plastic wingnut lays so it does not get in the way of your pan, I can go 360° around with mine with no problems. (New Buyers - After you purchase the tripod, you will understand what I am talking about, just remember to refer back to this review if it will not rotate 360°.)

Bottom line... Rock solid performer for the money!

This product was purchased primarily for video work and was everything I had hoped it would be - except for one major flaw that really should be addressed by the manufacturer.

The tripod itself is very sturdy, the fluid head is smooth, the leg locks positive, and the W3-Dolly that came as part of the BH package was a very useful addition. All in all, a great value.

BUT...the tripod uses a plastic molding for the leg guide and to attach the spreader to the legs. The clevis portion of this molding snaps off with very little pressure, leaving spreader unconnected and the tripod useless unless mounted on the dolly to constrain the flopping leg. One of these moldings was broken when we opened the box. I'm sure that BH would have taken care of this with absolutely no problem but the same thing would have happened again, probably at a very inconvienent time.

For most users this would have been a major problem but, as I liked the construction of the rest of the tripod very much, we went into our machine shop and made three new leg guide/clevises out of billet aluminum. End of problem and we now have a great tripod. But not many users will have a full machine shop at their disposal.

Comments about Davis & Sanford Provista 7518 Tripod with FM18 Head:

I mostly use this one with my camcorder Canon xa10. Literally, it works beyond expectation. The quality build, how smooth the FM18 provides, and how light weight it is. Aditionally, it comes with extra plate and a cover. Operating with 2 handles give me a lot of stability, and if I wanna take my camcorder off, I can do it very quickly thanks to 2 ways slide of the plate. Finally, I'm very happy with my purchase, definetely recommend.

Comments about Davis & Sanford Provista 7518 Tripod with FM18 Head:

This tripod is to replace my old (47 year old) cheap tripod with wobbly aluminum legs and broken head. I put off a replacement because I didn't want something cheap that could easily break. When B & H put this one on sale, I jumped at the deal. Glad I did.

Just bought this tripod because of the 50% off, I only paid $ . Out of the box it looks great and the tripod head really is smooth. Was planning on buying a more expensive manfrotto but I'm glad I save the money and went with this one plus it comes with an extra plate and a case.

If your thinking about a tripod feel secure in this one. Great feel, excellent build quality, pro feel and it smells like chocolate! Just kidding about the chocolate part but I really like this tripod. With the sturdy feel and ease of use, now this is now my go-to tripod. I watched a lot of reviews online and I could not find a bad one on this product. I glad I bought this and B&H made buying it so easy. Again, if your thinking of buying just one tripod, get this one.

Has a quality feel to it and as this is my first fluid head it has a unique feel when panning. Only have a few hours with it but so far so good. I would recommend this to any enthusiast shooter with a modest weight system 15-16 lbs. and under. Heavy pro systems may work but I can't comment to that. What I can say is this is a heck of a value for what you get. Love how two QD mounts are provided.

Comments about Davis & Sanford Provista 7518 Tripod with FM18 Head:

I ordered the Provista 7518 to use with my Canon DSLR. Immediately upon mounting my camera I noticed what I felt was the tripods first flaw, that being, it's tilting capability. Even when set to the lowest amount of tension the tension was so much that at least one leg of the tripod would lift off the ground. Panning on the other hand is quite smooth. In comparison to some other video tripods that I've used and prefer to this one, the 7518's leg locks are very low on the tripod, forcing you get down on your knees to reach them in order to extend or retract the legs on the tripod. Finally, the tripod is very heavy, which you think might help with the tilting issue, but it doesn't and just leaves you with a tripod that awkwardly fits somewhere between lightweight travel tripods and full size video tripods, in a category by itself that seems pretty undesirable, at least for my needs. One last thought, it does come with a very nice bag for the tripod, which is very nice. Perhaps not enough to make up for the other downsides though.

I'm using this tripod with my Canon Sl1 DSLR. It feels well built and sturdy and is more than enough for any DSLR. I wanted a tripod that had a bubble level. I don't like having to level a tripod by adjusting the length of the legs. My only complaint is that while the tilt an pan are smooth they feel a little stiff to me and I haven't been able to loosen the tension, but I can tighten the tension.?

I bought this tripod as a backup to my Benro S6 video tripod. For the most part, it is better than I expected for the price paid. I bought it on the $100 Christmas special so I definitely can't complain about the price. Unfortunately the head adjustment handle stripped out after just a couple uses when I made adjustment to the head level. The thread material is soft aluminum and even though I didn't tighten with much pressure it easily stripped. Even so, I went down to the hardware store and bought a simple handle and bolt as a replacement. Not worth the hassle to try and warranty the part, though I still may try to send the handle back for a replacement. Beyond that, the rest of the tripod seems fairly decent and is a good backup or secondary tripod. Definitely considering the price I paid or for the normal selling price. Just be aware it is not quite to the level of typical "name" brand units.

With the on sale price, it is a very good buy. This is the 2nd Provista that I owned. Very sturdy for my Sony FX1 with external Compact Recorder installed.
