I used this tripod for a wedding this past weekend and it worked out great. It is a little on the heavy side, but that is great in my book. It is not so heavy it cannot be carried, but my PD170 is rock solid on top! Head is very smooth and does excellent.

I noticed a lot of reviewers complained about breaking the tighteners for the arms and that the tightener for the pan got in the way. If you will notice, the plastic wing nut will pull away from the nut and allow you to get a small wrench in there to loosen up everything the first time out. Also, if you will pull out the plastic wing nut (you may need to unscrew the end) you can adjust where the plastic wingnut lays so it does not get in the way of your pan, I can go 360° around with mine with no problems. (New Buyers - After you purchase the tripod, you will understand what I am talking about, just remember to refer back to this review if it will not rotate 360°.)

Bottom line... Rock solid performer for the money!

This product was purchased primarily for video work and was everything I had hoped it would be - except for one major flaw that really should be addressed by the manufacturer.

The tripod itself is very sturdy, the fluid head is smooth, the leg locks positive, and the W3-Dolly that came as part of the BH package was a very useful addition. All in all, a great value.

BUT...the tripod uses a plastic molding for the leg guide and to attach the spreader to the legs. The clevis portion of this molding snaps off with very little pressure, leaving spreader unconnected and the tripod useless unless mounted on the dolly to constrain the flopping leg. One of these moldings was broken when we opened the box. I'm sure that BH would have taken care of this with absolutely no problem but the same thing would have happened again, probably at a very inconvienent time.

For most users this would have been a major problem but, as I liked the construction of the rest of the tripod very much, we went into our machine shop and made three new leg guide/clevises out of billet aluminum. End of problem and we now have a great tripod. But not many users will have a full machine shop at their disposal.

Yes it is heavy, but it is sturdy and stable! The head is nice and fluid. I believe one would be hard pressed to find such a more capable tripod anywhere near this price. Dollar for dollar it is outstanding!

Comments about Davis & Sanford Provista 7518 Tripod with FM18 Head:

The Provista tripod is a great tripod for the price and has a smooth head. The only problem I had was with the dolly Kit. You are not able to lower the tripod all the way down with the Dolly Kit attached to the tripod.

This is one of the better tripod I have. The panning is smooth like butter, I can not belive how gracefull the drag is. I really have no complaints about it. But for the price you can not beat it. I saved a lot of money by not going out to buy an expensive tripod. And beside that you have a professional tripod with out breaking your budget. I looked at many tripod systems before choosing this Davis and Stanford. I was very pleased with the quality of the product. One of the best values in tripods on the market. I'd highly recommend this unit.

Was looking for an economical tri-pod that I could use for video recording and I got more than expected. It came with a quick release mounting plate and an awesome case with cushioned supports. My only disappointment is that the fluid head has a tendency to get very tight when transporting in cold weather but indoor room temps work fine. Overall love the stability of the product. Would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a reasonable alternative to a higher priced fluid head unit.

Seriously for the price it works. Just don't put a heavy camera on it. You'll be fine. This tripod replaced my old bogen that wasn't fluid anymore and the fact that you can switch out the 75mm head with a better one down the road. Cool.

I love this Tripod. I am a emerging videographer and I really am impressed with the fluidness and professional look that I get with panning and tilting with it.. SOOO smooth.
The one con is the handles that latch down the camera are sometimes hard to use... but its easy enough to get around.
                  Overall great tripod

I bought this after looking to add a Bogen 501/3 Video head to my existing Bogen sticks, but those heads USED were priced more than I would spend on this completely new setup.

I got this version so i could independently level the head as well as the legs. This thing pops into action with a few solid flicks. The leg extesions clamps are no-nonsese large folding clasps that "click loudly" when locked down.Overall height is good, but you won't be getting many overheads with this one unless you are shooting the clown car.I have no real complaints yet other than the plate receiver is not an industry standard size.

I use this as a base for a FotoCrane jib. While the construction is reasonably solid, it's not a great tripod. Legs locks are extremely stiff; built-in head has locks in hard-to-reach places. Locks come loose very quickly.

Use it for free-standing prompter projects, dolley is perfect, just roll it away when I need to. Great for most DSLR shoots, comes with spare mounting bracket and spare Arm too!

Another good Davis & Sanford tripod. I really like this brand for their weight and sturdiness. Probably the only complaint I would have with this particular model is that there is no center post running down for the leg supports to lock down to. This makes it slightly less sturdy if it would happen to get bumped, but otherwise, a solid tripod.

Having gone through a couple of "budget" tripods, this one is worlds apart, despite the price. Solidly constructed, it doesn't shake, rattle or roll. Operation of the head, with camera mounted, is a bit stiff, but smooth as glass! I occasionally use it with a heavy telephoto lens - it is rock-solid. Comes with a nice fitting bag, a second mounting plat, and allen key to adjust things. Would buy this unit again if I had to.

This tripod has been very useful and easy to use when i have had to shoot video on my DSLR. There are many other higher priced versions but this one does teh job just as well.
