This is a fantastic camera head. I've owned one for 3 years and use it with a large MF film camera (Fuji GX-680III) with heavy glass. If it can handle that, it can handle anything in the 35mm/telephoto range. All actions are smooth and easy to access. The large knobs are rubberized and easy to grip. The knobs each have an outer collar that serves as the axis "quick release" for gross adjustment, and an inner knob for fine adjustment. I've never had a problem with drift or uncontrolled camera movement with this head. With heavy cameras, it's important to always have 100% positive control. This head provides that. Even when using the "release" collars, control is instantly restored as these collars are spring loaded and return to a locked position when your hand is removed.

It is important, however, to keep the load somewhat balanced. If you change the lens, for example, you may need to change the camera/lens mount point to reestablish a reasonable balance. Gross imbalance makes the movements a little less smooth than desired. A balanced load not only keeps the gear movements smooth, it also reduces vibration and protects your equipment from tip-over accidents!

This head seemed like a great idea -- great control over positioning the camera. Oil levels for each axis. BUT the geared head is clunky to use. There is a fine adjustment and a gross adjustment. Fine adjustment is easy. The gross adjustment is not particularly intuitive. This might just be a matter of familiarity. But you can find yourself releasing the gross adjustment too quickly and whipping your camera in an unintented way. Moreover, the head does not really lock down completely. With a heavy lens, the positioning will tend to drift. And the screw on the quick-release plate does not have enough freedom of movement to allow proper positioning for center of gravity.

Problems Encountered: Several. Most important - the head failed completely in one axis after just three months of use. Second, what seemed to me initially like advantages in degree of control over positioning proved minimal. The head does not lock down sufficiently over numerous exposures (I do a lot of timelapse). All in all, I have to recommend strongly against this head. Also, in retrospect, I wonder about the head's resistance to sand or grit.

Previous Equivalent Items Owned: Several tripods and heads, different manufacturers

Items I Recommend: A good set of legs.

Comments about Manfrotto 405 Pro Digital Geared Head (Quick Release) - Supports 16.5 lbs (7.5kg):

There are many situations where this head has proven to be the perfect tool. So far I have used it in the studio for table top set-ups, architectural exteriors and interiors. It is especially nice when working in tight spaces. It is also great with handling minute adjustments for macro work. There are many good things I could say about this product. Without a doubt I am very happy with this purchase.

This thing is rock solid. I did quite a bit of research looking for a head that could be used for macro work as well as have other applications. The price was what kept me looking for other alternatives. I am very glad that I decided to fork out the extra money and get this one. Worth every penny. This geared head is easy to use and is very smooth to operate.

Comments about Manfrotto 405 Pro Digital Geared Head (Quick Release) - Supports 16.5 lbs (7.5kg):

I own several different types of tripod heads (geared and ballheads). Even though the 405 Pro is not the most compact or lightweight head, it is incredibly easy to accurately fine tune levels. It operates very smoothly. I love the short handles, as they do not catch on things like the longer handles. Even though it is about the same size and weight as the older Manfrotto 808RC4, this head is in a class all by itself. IMO it is an OUTSTANDING head - especially for architectural photography where leveling is super critical. Worth every penny!!

This head is a bit heavy, but I negate that somewhat by supporting it with the excellent Gitzo GT5530S carbon fiber tripod. This head handles my Mamiya RZ67 and also my Fuji GX680 with equal ease. The best thing about this head is that the camera position is always locked in position and never at risk of tipping. This is important for heavy cameras and lenses. Each of the 3 axes has a fine, geared adjustment, as well as a rapid, gross adjustment. I've had many MF camera heads over the years. The 405 is, by far, the best.

Loved it the first second I touched it. Quite substantial but could still easily be used on a larger tripod like a 475.
Its not dinky like the 410 Junior which I have trouble getting my fingers jammed between knobs and body parts.
The 405 is smooth, accurate (multiple spirit levels and a joy to use...Worth every cent.

Comments about Manfrotto 405 Pro Digital Geared Head (Quick Release) - Supports 16.5 lbs (7.5kg):

This head was intended to replace my Manfrotto 255 geared head which I used for all of my macro/super macro images. The D800 with the RRS focusing rails, and light system produced a slightly unstable base. The 405 not only handles all of the weight of my camera + accessories but its own additional weight I believe helps stabilize my shot. (I also hang a bag on the tripod post). The continuous release option handles easily, and takes it out of geared mode, it is easy and allows for rapid non-macro/landscape image capture. (I would still recommend a Wimberly type head for live animal/bird photography.) On the down side due to the increased bulk I have to remove it from the tripod when traveling not a big deal. Overall I really found this to be exceptionally well built & worthy of the Manfrotto name.

This head is not small and requires a substantial tripod on which to mount it for stability. I use this for macro using a Canon 5D Mark III, RRS combo focusing rails, a Canon 100mm 2.8 macro lens as well as a Canon 65mm MP-E macro lens. This head can be quick and extremely precise when needed...very durable & worth every penny!

Purchased the 405 Pro Digital Geared Head primarily for architectural related work. My other standard sized ball head had difficulty holding the weight of bigger lenses. This thing is so solid in its build and also extremely smooth with every function. Whether you use the quick release or the incremental adjustment knobs, the Manfrotto 405 looks and works beautiful. Mind you, this is not a small item. So be mindful if you're looking for some that you can just stroll around with, this might not be it. But if you want sure-fire support when doing architectural or even landscape with a longer, heavier lens, this is the equipment for you. Would buy this 100 times over!!

I use the 405 head primarily when photographing architecture and when photographing products. It's an essential tool for ensuring repeatability of precise angles and fine-tuned control for getting the shots right. Things that are great: - It's precise.- It's durable. - It has spirit levels for both horizontal and vertical planes. - It makes a useful personal defense tool when your assignment takes you into a place you probably don't really want to be. Things that are challenging: - It's heavy. - You _might_ have to replace it if you drop down the steps to a cave, but I only say _might_.In sum, it's an awesome head that improves the results I create for my clients.

While I am very new to macro photography, whilst on a course to learn a little more the instructor told me to go for a geared head, I was using the gun head, and I have to say that this head is so amazing, it is superb to use for macro photography for the fine adjustments and the quick release even allows you to do super fast adjustments while using the head. It is definetly a must have in my opinion, even my landscape photography is going to benefit tremendously from this.

Quality geared head that operates smoothly on the three axes and provides a stable platform for the camera in shooting objects with a macro lens. Since I use RRS camera L-plates, I do wish there was a simple adapter clamp that married the Manfrotto quick release plate to the RRS dovetailed camera plates.

Have used the Jr. version before upgrading to this tripod. It definably feels more sturdy than the already sturdy Jr. version (like when using a 600/4), but, I have bigger hands, so, the controls on this version were easier than the Jr. was for me.

If you've never used a geared head before for doing photography, then your in for a real treat. It makes precision framing a breeze. I've too often fought with a ball head when trying to lock in that perfect frame, or with a 3-way head slipping. No longer with a head like this on or the Jr.

Noticeable differences over the Jr: placement of geared controls is easier to get at. Macro adjustment part of the knob is easier to get at and control.

Finally bought this geared head after renting it a number of times. I like the quick release plate for this one. it is a good size bigger than the 410 geared head model by manfrotto. My sausage fingers would not be able to turn the knobs quickly but on the 405, the knobs are spaced a bit more, allowing me to make quick or fine adjustments efficiently. The bubble levels on each axis were very nice, especially for video. It is a pricey head but well worth it so far. Very secure with the plate. Using it with a Canon 5dm2 setup with L-bracket and holds the weight easily. Shooting a lot of interiors and portraits, the fine geared adjustments are key.

Although this head is not perfect, it still deserves five stars. There are are better geared heads in the world, but they are two or three times more expensive. This head is a perfect combination of precise, strong construction, and affordability. I would definitely buy another one if needed.

The ONLY complaint I have about this head is that even though it is a professional head, the base is about 3/4" smaller in diameter than the Manfrotto tripod mounting plate on the highest end Carbon Fiber heads. It doesn't really affect the quality of the head, but it leaves the relatively sharp edge of the tripod plate (on the tripod) exposed and in close proximity of your knuckles when adjusting the knobs. Also looks like something that is unfinished.

Great tool for architectural photography. It's solid enough for a medium format and smooth enough for the precise movements needed when dealing with digital backs and technical cameras.
It's reasonably priced for the quality it delivers, but you'll develop some muscles if you have to carry it for long walks. Buy some extra Quick Releases for your different bodies. It will save time and wear.

I bought this head to make it easier for me to take macro shots around our place, as well as bird photos. When it arrived I was not immediately able to use it with my ancient Velbon Stratos tripod (for lack of a $A15 screw adapter), so I ordered a Manfrotto 190XPROB locally and married the head to that - a brilliant combination! The profusion of levels provided is confusing at first, and the tripod comes with its own level...

The combo is a tad heavy, but then, I don't lug it around a lot. But for the purposes I bought it for it is luggable enough. Haven't tried the horizontal position of the centre column but it seems sturdy enough to hold the Canon 5d2 with 100mm L IS USM macro lens in either position.

I would suggest to potential buyers of this head to buy an extra base plate if they have say two cameras to use with it - I did ($A27 from a local Manfrotto dealer) so I can keep the spare permanently on the Canon 7d with 200mm L USM II lens and 2x TC III that I use for birding...

                                All set...

over the years I've used 8 manfrotto heads and always had different heads for use on different tripod legs depending on the job at hand. This head is heavy duty but has all the finese you could ask for. I don't find it all that heavy that others have complained about. The ability to quickly adjust the levers by disengaging the gears for quick adjustment and then being able to fine tune for my macro work is really a joy.
