The Wein Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe (SSHSHS) regulates and reduces the flash sync voltage of the flash from up to 400V to less than 6V. This is especially important for current automated SLRs or digital cameras when used with older flashes or lighting systems.

This model mounts directly to a camera's hot shoe and provides a hot shoe on top and a PC female flash connection on the side.  You can have a flash connected to the hot shoe and a flash being triggered by the PC female connection-and unlike so many other offerings of this type, both will fire simultaneously from the same signal.

I needed powerful power packs for not much money and settled on the Norman P2000Ds. Research tells me that these older packs have a sync voltage of approximately 45 volts... way too much for my DSLR. I could go wireless, but that's alot of money. The inexpensive solution was the Wein Safe-Sync.

I was impressed with the build quality of the unit... even feels well made. I really like the "test" button on the side. The friction fit is snug on my camera's hot shoe and the PC connection fits snug as well. In practice, my power packs went off every single time I pressed the shutter.

I needed it and I'm glad I have it. Maybe you will too.

I use this safe sync on top of my Canon 5D and 5DMKii. The inner insulation eventually wears thin, and without the help of a threaded PC connecter, the pc connection can be tenuous after repeated use. I go through PC cords and these Wein safe-syncs swiftly-and intermittently lose pictures when the PC cord falls out. I would prefer an 1/8 phono plug version - since my working solution of using a threaded PC cord takes a few extra moments to undo and redo.

Comments about Wein Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe (SSHSHS):

I didn't know I needed this until I was reading a article online that talked about how new digital cameras can only use a low voltage to trigger a strobe. I have old strobes that still work great so won't buy new strobes. I never even thought about strobe firing voltages till I read the article but wanting to take pictures instead of waiting for my camera to come out of the repair shop seemed like the best idea and Wein seemes like the best for what they do so I bought theirs.
My only problem which turned out to be my problem was that I couldn't slide it into the hot shoe. I thought that the extruded aluminum case was too tight to go into the cameras hot shoe but it was just the very tight spring had to be pushed in to allow the case to slide in. It doesn't have a screw clamp to hold it in but the spring loaded ball should be plenty tight enough to keep it attached to the camera when removing the strobe.
Being a machinist I had thought I might have to remachine the slots on the side where it slides into the hot shoe so on a Saturday I had gont to Weins web site to ask if they had had this problem reported before and told them what I planned to do. Monday early they called me at work to say they were sory for my problems and would replace it even if I had machined on it. I measured all the dimentions and compaired them to the hot shoe dimentions and it should fit so I pushed on the ball contact on the bottom with a metal tool and it slid right in.
    Thanks for a great product.

I have a well functioning Sunpak522 flash unit and Speedotron studio lights that connect to my camera with a PC synch plug. My new Nikon D7100 does not accept PC synch plugs. The solution: a Wein Safe-Synch Hot Shoe.
It works great and completely resolved my problem.

Comments about Wein Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe (SSHSHS):

This product makes it possible to use my old flash units, that were manufactured before the "digital revolution", on modern digital cameras without blowing-out the sync circuit.
The circuitry is potted in epoxy and therefore is nearly indestructible.
I would change 2 things: 1-add some kind of locking mechanism to the foot that goes into the hot-shoe. 2-more rounding of corners.
All in all it is an excellent product.

I purchased this item for an upcoming project where I will need to control high voltage flashes with my digital camera. I have not had a chance to use it yet. The device seems reasonably well constructed, though I question why there is a flexible piece of tape/plastic containing a logo on it. Pros - small, lightweight, flash test button, does the job. Cons - PC connection could be threaded, no thumbscrew to lock it to the camera.

Comments about Wein Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe (SSHSHS):

The Wein hot shoe adapter does what it's supposed to do; however, it is a minimalist product, at a not so minimal price. At $ it should have a thumb wheel clamp for fastening to the camera's hot shoe. The Wein unit relies on friction, and it does a fair job, but my big Sunpack flash is still a little wobbly, and I'm concerned that repeated insertion and removal may cause premature wear and tear on the contact surface of the camera's hot shoe. The PC Connector is a nice touch, as I can also incorporate off camera flashes for studio work or wireless triggers. Not being a camera genius, I don't know if Pentax SLRs and DSLRs have the same set of dedicated flash contacts, but the primary flash I'm using is configured as a dedicated Pentax SLR Flash and only the trigger contact is passed through the Wein. Not sure if this is an oversight or a deliberate design. The bottom line is, don't buy one expecting to get dedicated flash operation.

This device fit perfectly into my Nikon D3200 hot shoe. Many people have described a too tight fit with the PC cord. The socket uses a Nikon thread. I used the threaded PC to blade adapter from B&H to connect. It solved the problem with no difficulty. My White Lightning strobes fire every time.

Use it to trigger older flash strobes from a newer DSLR. Avoids the possibility of high voltage getting back into the camera and frying the electronics. The shoe is made of an aluminum extrusion (very strong), not cheap plastic. One small issue is that the spring-loaded center contact is very stiff - makes for very secure contact, but more difficult to slide on and off of the camera hot shoe.

Comments about Wein Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe (SSHSHS):

The Safe-Sync is a tight fit in my Nikon D90 hot shoe, so much so that I wondered if I'd failed to read that it wouldn't work with one. Once I insisted and got it into the hot shoe, it worked perfectly. I have 2 digital cameras and 2 flashes from the 70s which now work PERFECTLY and safely with them.

The biggest benefit is that with wireless triggers I now have a two-light system, which greatly enhances my flexibility in shooting portraits.

Comments about Wein Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe (SSHSHS):

I really like this product. Not only does it protect my Canon T1i when using studio strobes, but works great as a manual trigger for my Canon hot shoe flash. I have had several on-the-run location shoots where I had to hold the flash off to one side to avoid window glare or to get a better subject to flash angle. I set the camera to a slow shutter speed, fired the trigger with a wired remote, and manually fired the flash with the Wein Safe-Sync.

I was too cheap to buy a Canon flash that would sync with my 7D so I bought this. I had an old Minolta flash that has the high voltage and this makes it work fine. Of course now that I have it I will save up and get a flash that is controlled by the camera. I can get plenty of light now but have to mess with the exposure for several shots to get it dialed in... Still, it works great and is 1/3 the cost of buying a low end flash for a Canon.

Comments about Wein Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe (SSHSHS):

Great to be able to use my old Metz 30 on newer cameras (currently a NEX-6). Does what is says on the tin, so why only 4*?

Well, a few things could be improved.
                                          1. Size. To minimise stressing hot shoes this should be as short as possible height wise. 1cm rather than 2cm tall would be good. Also its a little wide to be able to get a grip on a locking screw for the flash I use and so presumably others (ie difficult to lock onto it).
                                          2. No locking screw for securing this to the host hotshoe. Would be nicer if this also had a locking screw. You want this to use a powerful older flash, and that might be heavy.
                                          3. Why the weird top hotshoe contact design? Looks like a circuitboard you plug your flash into. Not like a normal standard metal foot with an insulator-connector insert. Presume they had a good reason for this but it would be good to be explained - as it looks halfbaked or like a prototype...

Design criticisms aside, this works, so it recommended! Enables cheap powerful flashes to be used on newer cameras. Light is good in photography, and this buys you a lot of light from older flashguns!

Note that of course the dedicated contacts are ignored by this so its manual settings. For a 70s-90s auto flash this is no big deal - set ISO on camera, read aperture off flash for selected flash power setting, set aperture on camera, set camera shutter to its max sync speed eg 1/125, go.
