Ideal for scenery or full-length portraits. Weighs just 0.34 lb, making it great for travel while still offering excellent low light gathering properties. Stops down to f/22 for wonderful control of depth of field. Accepts 52mm filters and the HR-2 lens hood. Autofocus is not supported by D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100, D5200 cameras--lens may be used with manual focus only. Be sure to check your camera's lens-compatibility information before selecting a new lens.

No matter what type of photography you shoot, every one should own this lens.

-This lens is SHARP!! at f/4 its as sharp as lenses that cost 15 times as much. 1.8 is a little soft, but it's great to have for novel shallow DOF/ night/ special effects.

-the AF is faster then most of my AF-s lenses and just as accurate. It might search a little in really hard situations, but no more than much more expensive lenses.

-This lens is so light! It is always in my pocket, Always! no matter what I'm doing having a sharp, fast, non-intrusive (it's so small it doesn't scare people, so in most situations I get better images than with the amazing 70-200 because it's HUGE and intimidating)--A lens is only useful if you use it.

-on a DX (cropped sensor) camera this lens is even more amazing! It is 75mm equivalent; perfect for part body portraits/ street photography. Because DX only uses the center of the frame it's even sharper!

-there is *no* distortion (perfect for architecture)
Some coma in the corners and some light falloff at 1.8 on full frame/ 35mm, no biggie. A perfect complement to a distorted, slow walk-around zoom.

-bokeh(smooth out of focus areas) is good but not amazing
way better then any cheep zoom though.

If you're thinking about getting the 1.4: the only reason to spend three or four times as much is that it's sharper at f/1.8. BUT it has more distortion at f/4 than it's cheaper sibling. If you're a pro and need build quality, don't let me stop you, I have one. For every one else, If you have four hundred dollars burning a hole in your pocket get a 85 1.8 or the new 60 2.8 AF-s

-this is still up in the air but the 50mm 1.4 AF-s I tried was no faster then the 1.8. (whoops)

If you're really hard on your gear I'd say, buy a 52mm Nikon NC filter and Nikon HR-2 rubber hood (or another 50 1.8 for almost the same price)

    bottom line:
its one of the SHARPEST, FASTEST, LIGHTEST, MOST USEFUL lens money can buy, AND IT'S THE CHEAPEST!!!

    It makes every camera, from a D3x or a F6 to a D50, shine!

This lens is great for the money. It really is. But it has very ugly highlights in low light. I just purchased the overpriced 45mm Nikkor P. It is old school, manual focus, and simply beautiful in low light. For other applications, I have the 60mm micro-Nikkor. So I will probably sell the 50mm.

It is, however, definitely worth the price. It focusses fast, it does work well in low light, and you really cannot beat the price. It's small, light, and very sharp. But I think the 45mm, although overpriced, is far superior for my needs. The focus ring on that lens is very well damped, and the bokeh is otherworldly. I don't pixel peep so I'm not concerned with the absolute sharpness. I love the colors and the depth of field. But if you want a lens that is small, light, and inexpensive, the 50mm is it. My "problem" is it really isn't worth selling, and the thing weighs mere ounces.

I might get a really fast 50mm, like the f1.2. But since I am now shooting with a D700, lens speed really doesn't matter. But it would be fun to hook up a f1.2 shooting at iso 6400 in virtual darkness.

As an amateur on a limited budget, purchased this lens for my D7100. I shoot mostly nature photos and photos of the grandchildren. Lens has given definite improvement in picture quality over the kit lens.It has become my walk around lens of choice. I had read some reviews about it being awkward to mount on the D7100 but I have not had any issues.

Use it as a short portrait tele with a 7100. Back in the film days a 85 1.8 was always in my bag. This kind of lens, almost symmetrical in design, is very sharp and well corrected. I feel speed is not a big deal compared to a 1.4 especially considering the difference in cost.

A sharp clear lens for relatively cheap - only thing it lacks is an internal motor (there is a more expensive model with the motor if your body needs it). There is basically no good excuse not to have this lens, unless you already have better glass.

Takes nice clear pictures and offers great depth of field. I bought this camera for portraits and am very happy with it. One thing to note and this is not a negative, but you want to make sure you read the description clearly before purchase. I have a Nikon D5000 and AF is disabled for this camera and some others. The lens aperture ring must also be set to f/22 and then you use the camera's aperture settings. Again, this is a great lens, but make sure you're not caught off guard when you go to use it the first time.

I don't like the fact the lens is made in China and the plastic construction but I do like the quality images it provides. Ask me in three or four years if I still like it.

This is the first prime lens I've purchased for my Nikon, and it doesn't disappoint. The auto-focus doesn't work on my model, but I usually focus manually for the purposes I bought it for anyway. The glass creates very clear shots and I love the wide aperture.

Wow!! I can't say enough about this glass. I love how fast, crisp, and clean it is. The bokeh is superb and adds such a inch finish to your photo's. A must have prime!!!!!

Using this lens for general shooting, outdoors and in. Great for portraits, does well in low light with digital or film camera. Fast focus and very clean images. Feels well built even if it is light. Plastic feel described by others seems unfair for a [$] dollar lens.

Comments about Nikon Normal AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Autofocus Lens:

Now that I have a camera body (D7000) that can focus with this lens, I understand why it's held in such high regard, despite its bargain price. It focuses quickly & quietly. It produces great colors and bokeh in shots of my son. It's exceedingly fast & crisp, even with a fast ISO, helping me freeze the unpredictable movements of a one year-old.

I love this lens, I have several of them 2 are made in Japan and 2 made in China. This is the best 50mm lens you can get for the money. It's small, light, sharp and pretty quick. At some point these will be discontinued and the new generation G lenses will take over.
