Product Highlights
  • Digital Reflected Reading
  • Incident Flash Reading
  • With 5 Degree Spot Meter

The Polaris Dual 5 Flash Meter is a dynamically enhanced version of the Polaris 2 Flash Meter. The Polaris Dual 5 features both 5 degree spot metering capability and a rotating receptor head - as well as an on command backlight LCD display. This is handy when using the meter in low-light scenarios such as clubs, museums, galleries or libraries. You retain complete control of the backlight feature regardless of the mode being used, whether it is flash, ambient or combined.

This full featured meter measures in cord or cordless mode whether for flash or ambient. With shutter speeds up to 1/8000 second, you'll be able to record sports, nature and other venues with little problems.

The 5 degree spot feature makes shooting far off subjects more precise. When shooting portraits, it will allow you to measure one side of the face against the other. In high contrast arenas, you'll be able to narrow your exposure beam for a more exact measurement.

It runs on one "AA" battery (not included) which makes battery replacement easily obtainable no matter where you are. With fingertip controls and an easy to read style, this is a lightweight and easy to  use meter that will make your photographic jobs easier and more successful.

Note! The Polaris Dual 5 combines all the other features and specifications of the original Polaris and Polaris 2 Meters

Built-in back light illuminates read-out for easy meter readings in all light situations
Illumination is independent of all other functions and can be used at any time, in any mode for any duration and will never clear the current reading

Unique multi-flash feature makes it simple to calculate how many times the flash must be fired to achieve a desired f/stop

Comments about Shepherd/Polaris Polaris Dual 5 Flash Meter:

I was very positively surprised with this meter. It is very precise, but it can be calibrated to your individual camera (although this would be done without software, unlike a top of the line meter). It has full stops for the numbers, with 1/10 and 1/3 stops by the scale under the number. The description of the product is lacking on some important features: it DOES have the capability of multi flash metering, giving you the number of bursts needed to achieve a certain f-stop, and it has a ring to go around the dome, so you can read individual flashes without having to shield the meter with your body, or meter flat surfaces. The reading I've gotten have been spot on. No regrets not having gotten a Sekonic. The spot metering works with flash, but it's a 5 degree... if you're really into spot metering this would not be the best, as you would probably want a 1 degree meter. Easy to use. I have not tried it with remotes. If you're big into PocketWizards, a Sekonic with that interface built-in will be pure sweetness, but I have seen websites showing you can use PWs with this meter. I just use cables, though.
I don't care about meters with light ratios, so this works fine. I find it easy to think about the ratios in my head.

I need a spot-meter for my alternative process shoots. I have not fully tested it yet, but so far it is easy to use, compact, and just what I need.

while plastic this Polaris seems sufficiently rugged ... Used for both studio an outdoor nature photography. Gives me assurance and actually speeds up the process. Should have had one of these years ago.
