      First Time Shooting 8x10

      By Photo Student

Comments about Ilford HP5 Plus 8x10" 25 Sheets Black & White Print Film (ISO-400):

I recently purchased this film because I had the opportunity to borrow an 8x10 camera from a friend. I normally shoot with Ilford HP5 4x5 film, so I stuck with what I knew and bought the larger version. After hand processing my film it seemed to me that the 8x10 film may even be less prone to scratching than the 4x5. I'm very impressed with the quality!

Currently using it in studio under continuous tungsten lights. It seems an excellent film. Love the extra speed. Several exposures to get the images I am making through an old Ektar 250mm Wide-Field. I'm happy with it. Xtol for developer in Trays, 1:1 at 68 degrees for 9:40.

Great film, in my opinion the only high speed alternative to Trix 320, excellent with many developers and with Pyro.

Comments about Ilford HP5 Plus 8x10" 25 Sheets Black & White Print Film (ISO-400):

I use HP-5 mostly in my large-format work (8x10, 4x5 9x12). It has great exposure latitude and is very forgiving. I like the way HP-5 handles high-contrast situations and delvers a beautiful negative with very smooth mid tones. As with all LF sheet film, extra care is required to prevent scratches and dust, but HP-5 is one of the most widely used emulsions because of its consistent and predictable results.

Normally I shoot FP4+ for the finer grain but I needed something a bit faster and Ilford delivered again! HP5 is a great product and the grain isn't really noticeable.

The Ilford HP5 Plus is a very good general purpose film. Using PMK Pyro-Metol Kodalk Developer produces a negative with sufficient subtleties and nuances for contact printing.

I have been using Ilford films for many years now and I cannot complain about a thing! With this particular 8x10 film I have always had consistent tonal range with each shot from the same series. I shoot mostly indoor low-light scenarios with this 400 speed film and the results are great. If you want consistent, acurate film results...this is the film to choose!

Comments about Ilford HP5 Plus 8x10" 25 Sheets Black & White Print Film (ISO-400):

I generally use ilford hp+5 in 4 x 5 format and used it as my first attempt at 8 x 10. The familiarity of it is great and helps but it does scratch even more easily than the 4 x 5, obviously just because of the greater surface area.

Because of it's great reciprocity characteristics, my favorite film in 8x10 has been T-Max 400; it threw me off when Kodak discontinued it so I started trying other films. I make large pigment landscape prints for gallery exhibition so it was important to me to have consistency. Let's face it, when you shoot in this format, grain is really no longer a consideration so it is all about the look of the film. I have always liked Delta 100 as it scans so well but in 8x10 it is too sharp for the look I am after. I was pleasantly surprised with HP5+, it is a very forgiving film and exposed at E.I. 100 and processed in Xtol gives me the shadow detail I prefer- and a beautiful tonal pallet! Bravo to Ilford for offering this lovely emulsion in 25 sheet boxes.

Its not the "best" for B&W film but it will do the trick. I have been able to get high contrast negatives using this product which is good for alternative printing.

Comments about Ilford HP5 Plus 8x10" 25 Sheets Black & White Print Film (ISO-400):

I am a photographer working in the Brooklyn area and I shoot almost exclusively at night. I aim for high quality, high contrast, low grain images...and for this I trust Ilford HP5 plus film from B+H. 8x10 film is in general going to be expensive just about everywhere you go, but at about 4 or 5 dollars a sheet from B+H, it is well worth the price. This film can easily be pushed and pulled a good 4 stops, while retaining good shadow and highlight detail in even the most extreme of situations.

In the darkroom, prints from this film are gorgeous: amazing tonal range with deep blacks, screaming highlights and an impressive mid-tone range that I have not seen with any other film on the market today. Once you turn to scanning the negatives it's the same story, massive high res images that you can blowup larger than life without pixelation.

For years I have been a Kodak man, and always thought that just because the T-Max 400 was supposedly the tightest grain 400 ISO film on the market but after switching to my new 8x10 camera: I AM A BELIEVER IN THE ILFORD LINEUP OF FINE BLACK AND WHITE PRODUCTS!

If you shoot an 8x10 camera, and need superb quality film at an affordable price then LOOK NO FURTHER!

HP5 Plus is still my film of choice for large format sheet film. With it's competitors selling 10 sheets to a box, it's nice to know you can still get 25 sheets per box from Ilford.
