Yamaha MSP3 Amplified Two Way Compact Monitor with 4" Woofer - Shielded (Single)

You Pay: $119.00

The MSP3 is a two-way powered monitor designed for use in personal music production systems. Each unit features a built-in 20 watt amplifier that drives both the 4" woofer and the 7/8" tweeter.

The enclosure of the MSP3 is a bass-reflex type. The tweeter is seated in a proprietary waveguide that aids in the uniform dispersion of the high frequencies. Magnetic shielding and compact size allows the speakers to be placed close to computer monitors. The monitor can also be mounted on a microphone stand with the optional BMS10A stand adapter.

The MSP3 features separate volume controls for the two line inputs plus high and low tone controls for tailoring the response of the monitors. To facilitate connection with a wide variety of audio sources, the monitor is equipped with a balanced XLR input, a balanced 1/4" TRS phone jack and an unbalanced RCA coaxial input.

Comments about Yamaha MSP3 Monitor (Single):

I have been using several MSP3s for 10 years in school and church. Tried other low cost small monitors and nothing comes close in price or quality. It has good sound with smooth midrange and highs and reasonable low frequency, also moderately directional to keep from bleeding into other monitors. Most importantly it is heavy and rugged. Drum sticks don't puncture the speakers. Built in volume, bass & treble controls are a plus when you have several monitors on a single mix. Accepts +4 or -10 db line level signal. A mounting adapter is available for attaching to standard microphone stand. Low frequency range is less than an 8" or 12" powered speaker, but for a small footprint this is my favorite.

Comments about Yamaha MSP3 Monitor (Single):

I wanted a better speaker for Short Wave Listening than my old home made speaker. I decided to try this MSP3.The speaker arrived today. I hooked it up and it's a great improvement in midrange clarity versus my previous speaker. The MSP3 is probably overkill for the job. I'm not listening to music or video sound tracks. I'm trying to pick out weak signals in noise. Midrange clarity counts. This speaker delivers because it is not very expensive, it is not very large, and the midrange is very good.I like the front panel controls for volume, bass, and treble. A rear panel power switch doesn't bother me much. A front panel power switch would add to the size of the enclosure. It's simple enough to reach around to the back and feel the large power switch button. One deciding factor was that it has an RCA (unbalanced) input. 1/8" to RCA cables are available at every hardware store, and are not expensive. The one thing I would have preferred is a cloth front grill as an accessory.I might consider picking up a pair of these speakers and a suitable subwoofer for my computer room. This speaker does well for my SWL application, and I think would do well for non-critical music listening from a computer.

Excellent sound. Used on desktop for computer sound. Aesthetics could be nicer, sound a little difficult to equalize due to nature of speakers (Monitors), but once you get it right sound is very pleasant. Like controls on front instead of rear (wished ON switch was in front). Overall, excellent little package for PRICE.

I bought these based on other reviews and will shortly use with a digital 24 track recorder. That said, I am currently using with an iMac computer, and I can say that with a little equalization, they rock just fine with downloads from iTunes or using Pandora radio. A little light on the bottom end, to be expected with a 4" woofer, but you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Yamaha MSP3 Monitor (Single):

When it comes to professional audio reproduction, no one knows or does studio sound like Yamaha does. Their studio monitors are in a class of there own in terms of accuracy, fidelity, presence and all-around quality. My main studio monitors are the active MSP7's but I've added the MSP3's as 'surrounds' for increased field/spatial depth. I'd never recommend any other monitor other than the professional line-up of Yamaha active studio monitors. And, you shouldn't settle for less if you truly value your music experience. Hearing is believing and your faith in what the ultimate in quality means will be restored if you give these near-field monitors a listen. Always employ balanced signals for zero noise.

Comments about Yamaha MSP3 Monitor (Single):

I purchased a pair of these MSP3 monitors for my DAW recording/mixing desk and they are perfect for the small space I have to work with. My setup has me sitting just a little over 3 feet away from them. Larger speakers would be overkill in this situation. At first I tried a pair of Behringer MS16s in an attempt to save some money, but I wasn't pleased with them at all. The Behringers sounded very "boxy" and had poor imaging. The Yamahas are worth the extra cost, no doubt. They produce a clear stereo image and reveal a LOT of detail in the upper mid-range and highs, and this is very important when mixing. My mixes on the MSP3s so far have translated well to other systems. I've owned and used a lot of speakers over the past 20 years, including a pair of Genelec 1029As (5"). I've always thought the Genelecs sounded excellent for critical listening applications but I'd be hesitant to mix on them. I think if you are producing music in a home studio the Yamaha MSP3s are a better choice to mix on. Bass response is lacking just like you would expect on such a small cabinet, but I appreciate that it is flat and not artificially hyped like some other brands. I can still use these to get an accurate estimate of what my bass will sound like on other systems. My only complaint is that I'd like the power buttons to be on the front, and perhaps a linked-stereo volume control would be nice too, since these are targeted towards small computer setups. But I'm using a mixer so I can deal with volume there.

I bought 2 of these speakers for use with my Yamaha Disclavier player piano which is located in the living room. The size and quality of sound was especially important. The speakers are working out great and don't really have any negative complaints. A grill cover might be the only thing that would improve the looks cosmetically.
