I bought this boom light kit to display a product at a trade show and it really helped shed light, literally, on the product displayed. If you get a wider cone to splay the light out with, you can illuminate a whole room for interviews and other occasions where light needs to be distributed. Overall a great buy.

I purchased this as a hair light. It generates way too much light over too broad an area to be an effective hair light with out modification. By using a grid, a snoot, cinefoil or other inexpensive coping strategies it can be made to work.
I thought the directions that came with it were unnecessarily vague, for instance, this is not a photo of what the completed device looks like.

This is the second of these that I have purchased. Perfect for my small studio. Easy to assemble, intuitive to use, adjustable in many ways. , allows me to give directional lighting as I choose. So much better than a flash - I can see what I'm getting in advance.

Comments about Smith-Victor MB500 1-Light 250 Watt Mini Boom Hair Light Kit (120VAC):
Pretty good light, but with the following drawbacks:
My kit came with no instructions - I figured it out eventually, but it wasn't simple, especially since I'm new to this. I'm still not quite sure if I have the boom arm attached correctly - but people with more experience with this kind of equipment may find assembly to be no problem. Attaching the swivel head/reflector/light fixture to the boom arm was especially intimidating thanks to all the little unmarked pieces and no earthly idea how they were supposed to go together. But eventually, through trial and error, I figured it out.
My biggest frustration is the size and shape of the reflector does not allow for CFL bulbs; I use CFLs in my other lights because they run cool and I prefer the color temp over tungsten lamps. Before purchasing this kit I checked with B&H to see if a CFL would be compatible and was assured it would be - in their defense, the bulb would work in the fixture if the reflector was wider.
I also wish I could control the light output or that the kit came with some sort of diffuser, but I guess you get what you pay for! I would recommend this product to a friend only after explaining the above concerns.

Very mobile and quick set up. Worked perfect as described and was great as a hair light. Only thing I would change is it needed a longer cord. When the boom is fully raised and arm extended the power cord was a little short.

I'm a painter. I've been using the mini-boom kit in concert with other lights when I take reference photos for portraits and still life paintings. Perhaps my studio or subjects are small, but it lights things up in a big way! It's inexpensive, lightweight and doubles as a very good work light!

Good kit although weights need to be used when fully extended. The defuser I also purchased works well.

Good little light, I'm using it for a hair light although I would like to put lower wattage bulbs in it but I haven't tried. The stand is a little shakey high up but still worth the purchase.

This little boom light is the perfect hair-light for both photo and video work. It's lightweight, and rises to the occassion with a tall stand and long boom arm. For the price, it's a steal.

I use this light occasionally in a lab environment. It met my needs of a light duty, compact, inexpensive workspace lighting for product photos. It is a bit tippy, so weight the base for more stability. Be careful, as the 250W bulb gets hot.

Unit gets extremely hot. A sandbag is necessary to keep from tipping when adjusting boom for all needs.
