I have never written a product review, but was so pleased with this product I wanted to add to the scant reviews of it here: I just purchased othe MB-110 Mini Boom after reading reviews that some of the competitor's products were flimsy. I was hoping that would not be the case with this item, but realized I was taking a chance since it only had two reviews. I am happy to report that this mini boom is actually better than I expected, and particularly good for the price. It is really well made with a nice precision feel, very solid locking mechanism, and a good quality telescoping arm. I bought it to use with a manfrotto nano stand (easy portability) and a Nikon SB900 and mini softbox for product & food photography. I wouldn't extend the arm out too far without a weight on the base of the stand, or an additional counterweight on the boom, but otherwise it seems very solid and is exactly what I was looking for. I am so pleased with it that I am going to order another one.

If you have the right diameter light stand, I suppose this could be a good boom. The problem is that this boom (and others with the same style mounting head) need to go around the light stand shaft, not the stud on the top of the stand. The stud is a standard size, the diameter of the shaft is not. I have some Impact 9.5' "heavy duty" lightstands that are too big for this boom to attach to. I also have a smaller Westcott lightstand that came with my soft box. That stand is too small for this mount. I wish I had known to look for this before I purchased.

            A light duty boom

Comments about Smith-Victor MB110 2 Section Lightweight Boom,:

Build quality is not bad, but this is not heavy-duty gear. The counterwight is helpful, but with a speedlight mounted on the end of the boom, an additional 2 lbs was needed for a 1/3-2/3 extension. This boom is just barely up to the task with a small 1.5lb monolight. Still more counterweight is needed.

The swivel clamp is limited to about two diameters of tubing. The lever-handled nuts are easy to use, but when you try to reposition the clamp, if you're not careful, the nut comes off in your hand, the washer falls on the floor, and the clamp comes apart.

Needed something that would fit into the Lowel hardshell travel case to put a Lowel Pro hair light on. I couldn't get good hair light without the light stand in the interview video shot.
                        Collapses to 27" - check.
Holds the Pro light without sandbags - check.
I should add that the coupling clamp is quite versatile and hearty. Very happy with this purchase.

The Smith-Victor Mini Boom is great for the new lightweight flourescent lighting. The boom pole extends out to 6 feet and has a small counterweight at the other end. The really amazing part of this is the "double grip head" that attaches the boom to a variety of sizes of light stands- it's matte black, has ribbed contact surfaces for locking the position (unlike other grip heads that rely on friction to lock in place), with multiple size holes on both sides for attaching to different size poles, as well as spring loaded adjustment handles- once the boom is tightened in position, you can pull out on the handles and reposition them how you want, without loosening the boom or light pole grip. I'll use this for video production work, and I'm sure you'll find many uses for yours! Great product!

The Mini Boom is used to provide a hair light set up and to hold large umbrellas for portrait photography. The boom is just the right size for holding umbrellas away from the light stand and it is substantial enough to hold small strobe or flash unit as a hair light. The one pound weight is not heavy enough to use the boom with large lights, but it is great for small one. It is easy to carry and pack. Great boom for a "minimalist."

                            Could use a heavier counterweight

Comments about Smith-Victor MB110 2 Section Lightweight Boom,:

I've been pleased with this purchase. It works great for what I wanted it for.

If I could change just one thing, I would give it a heavier counterweight. When the other side is extended out all the way with the light attached, it is nearly impossible to balance the light stand. I know I should probably throw a sandbag on it anyway, but those are heavy and I don't want to lug them around. I'd rather carry a slightly heavier counterweight.
