We shoot four to five small business videos a week along with weddings on the weekend. A lot of times taking our larger tripods into these spaces just doesn't work, but using these the folding base along with our Manfrotto monopod allows us to get steady tilt and pans shots along with dead steady camera shots in all types of spaces. We can weave around tables, set down a 5D Mark III with a 70-200 on it and feel confident that it's not going to fall over. Often we use it was a 24-70 L which is pretty heavy, and again, no issue with stability.
The legs easily unscrew from the bottom and are quickly deployed even using just one hand. The only issue we would be that they can sometimes rattle inside the monopod, but this was easily solved with putting a rubber band around them before inserting them back into the mono pod. Keeps them together until you're ready to unfold them and also cut all the noise when carrying them around. Really solid construction.
Would highly recommend them for DSLR video or photography if you want dead steady shots.

I bought this hoping to have a relatively small and stable platform from which to shoot low light when travelling. The problem is that these legs only really provide a stable platform for long exposure (> 1/4 sec) when the monopod is closed. With only one section extended it wasn't bad for 1/10 to 1/2 sec, but even then I had some shake if I wasn't really careful.

I put the legs on my 680B with the tilt head (3239?), and the legs almost doubled the weight. This gave me a heavier platform than I wanted, that wasn't that much more stable than the monopod alone. In the end the legs really weren't worth it, and I would have been better off spending the money on a budget lightweight tripod.

I really wanted to like these legs, but after carting the monopod with these legs inside around Disney for a week I really regretted leaving the original monopod foot at home.

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:

These legs fold up and store inside a monopod. I use the 681 monopod with the folding base to support an additional strobe. When using this setup with a camera it is easier to stabilize while holding it. While the legs are in storage, they tend to rattle, I will have to think of a way to quiet them. It does add a tiny bit of weight to the monopod. It is a good accessory if you need a strobe stand or more stability with your monopod.

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:

I received the 678 folding base for my 680 monopod today. The first problem was removing the original rubber foot without scratching or marking the monopod leg. I used a small vise with protected jaws. To do the same set the jaws for a width slightly wider than the leg, place the rubber foot outside the jaws and pull gently. It will come right off. Then placing the metal sleeve over the monopod leg was the next challenge. I pried the adjustment slit open slightly with a beveled metal chisel and slipped it on about 1/8th inch. Then I gently tapped it on the rest of the way with a plastic hammer. All went smoothly. Then fitting the outer sleeve that holds the legs was very easy. Adjusting the three set screws with the provided Allen wrench finished the job nicely. Mounted the Manfrotto MHXPRO 3W pan/tilt head and am looking forward to using the monopod for both video and digital photo work during the college graduation and vacation season coming up. This combination is a little on the heavy side, but the stability and quality promise many years of productive use.

      Great addition to my monopod

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:

Easy to install on my monopod by following the instructions that came with the unit. The hardest thing was removing the rubber tip on the monopod itself but a pair of channel locks did the trick.

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:

The base is perfect if you want to stand the monopod up. It is very sturdy. Nice how you can fold the feet up into it so it will fit in a small tripod bag, Only negitive thing about it's heavy because it is made of steel. Maybe they could make it out of aluminum?

I mostly shoot weddings and got this item for those up close detail shots on in-adamant objects. I wanted something to keep my camera stable when I let go of it to help get me shots that were less shaky then if I were holding the camera.

Great strong product. Will not break, however should not considered as a replacement for a tripod. In still air with remote release works great. It has supported a D300s with grip, sb800 and 70-200 2.8 together in a pinch.

This is a great addition to my Manfrotto 680B monopod. It is used to help stabilize the monopod to make panoramic shots; sometimes it is easier and faster to use a monopod than my full tripod. This folding base provides the plum-line and stabilization to shoot a cleaner panorama for stitching.

I am not too fond of the rattling of the legs when the base is inserted for carrying. Nor do I like the that you have to unscrew the base to access the legs and then screw it back onto the base of the monopod. I had hoped to find something with collapsible legs to speed up the process of shooting, but overall I accept these compromises with this product.

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:

It is a good product. I have ordered one years ago and still works perfect. This time, when I received my second one, the 3 attach bolts/screws did not tight up, one of them is missing. I did contact to B&H, and I am still waiting them to ship me the missing bolt/screw.

I hope the Manfrotto will tight up the bolts/screws before they will ship out to their distrubutors.

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:

Only used it on one shoot so far but the results were noticeable immediately. The device prevented any side to side movement of the monopod thereby increasing image sharpness.

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:

Not as stable as a tripod for my camcorder or eos7d, so I might not use it for an extended interview. But most of my shooting is of events going on outside, run and gun style and this kills the shakes my monopod would have. The extra weight keeps me in shape, and it sets up quick.

It was perfect. It made a compact unit for our Maui trip. It made the 680 a lot more versatile and was really stable. Great product at a great price.

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:

The description states that the 678 Universal Folding Base works with the "older style 3016". I have a 3016 that I bought years ago that I wanted to upgrade to a lightstand for use with a small flash. I also thought that this base would help to steady the monopod more when using a camera on it.

The unit itself seems well designed and robust. But the legs would not fit into the monopod and the metal collar it comes with wouldn't fit over the monopod leg. I fixed the collar problem with pliers (prying the collar open a bit). But the legs still didn't fit.

The problem was the groove that is near the bottom of the monopod. The rubber foot (which I removed) fits into it and prevents it from sliding off. This groove decreases the inside diameter of the tube so the 3 base legs cannot fit. I tried filing it flat, but I ended up just putting the monopod on a vise and cutting off the lower inch or so of the monopod leg with a hacksaw. After that, installation was easier, and the legs do fit into the monopod when not in use. Hooray!

So it does work, but I am slightly annoyed that the compatibility description wasn't exactly accurate and that I had to irreversibly modify my monopod.

My monopod now seems to work fine as a very light-duty lightstand, and I don't see myself removing the base from my monopod anymore so I am satisfied.
