Comments about Gitzo G1077M Magnesium Center Ball Head 0:

G1077M Ball Head 0 by Gitzo is a very lightweight and compact ballhead ideally suited for use on tabletop tripods or support grips.

The main targeted equipment for this type of ballhead is smaller DSLRs, compact prosumer digital cameras and prosumer video cameras.

It works very well for those intended purposes, but don't try to use it with anything heavier than about 5 pounds in non-stationery setup. If you want a small ballhead for something that approaches the maximum weight that this ballhead is rated for (5.5 pounds), your better option is Leica Large Ball Head (B&H # LEBSHL).

You must consider the following flaws before you decide to buy this G1077M Ballhead:

        1. The mounting socket is 3/8" diameter with 16 tpi thread. This means you can't mount it directly on the tripod equipped with 1/4" stud with 20 tpi thread. You have to either use an adapter, such as Manfrotto 088LBP (B&H # MA088LBP) or reducer bushing, such as Wimberley BS-100 3/8"-16 to 1/4"-20 Brass Reducer Bushing (B&H # WIBS100).

        2. If you want to tilt the ballhead and pan it at the same time - you can't do that. Unlike the Leica Large Ballhead, there is no rotating collar. What this means in practical terms is that if you decided to tilt the camera from landscape to portrait orientation, you may need to actually reposition the tripod if the notch in the ballhead was facing you, because in this case you're "flipping" the camera and the lens towards you and not to the side.

        3. If you're approaching heavier loads, you must really tighten the ballhead. This ballhead lockup works by pure friction, there are no grooves or any other features that make it easier. You really have to tighten the nut if you want a strong, solid lockup.

Other than these few issues, this ballhead works well for its intended purpose and I find it to be the most compact option out there. My Leica Large Ballhead has a somewhat superior "feature set", but is twice as big as this Gitzo G1077M. So, I tend to use Gitzo G1077M quite frequently where I want the absolutely smallest setup with a table tripod used as a chest brace for example.

Comments about Gitzo G1077M Magnesium Center Ball Head 0:

Sorry guys but I didn't care for this ballhead. It is nicely made but in order to hold my Canon SLR and any L series lens I really had to tighten it down and I have fairly strong hands. I felt like I was going to break something if I reefed down any harder. I was replacing a cheap ballhead I'd had for years that was beginning to get rough feeling. I finally took the old ballhead apart and cleaned it up and put the Gitzo in a drawer. Nothing against Gitzo, I use the heck out of a G1028 mk2 tripod and it's fantastic.

Using in conjunction with Gitzo 0531 tripod. Pair produce very lightweight setup for hiking. Ball head holds well even supporting my Sigma 150 f2.8 Macro no problems.

Comments about Gitzo G1077M Magnesium Center Ball Head 0:

I bought this head to use with my Gitzo GT2540 tripod on a 9 day backpacking trip in the Sierra with my 5D and 17-40L and 25-105L lenses.

While the combination of this head and that tripod still comes to 4 lbs, it beats the pants off of the flimsy 2 lb $80 thingy I had the year before. I could get any shot I wanted on this tripod setup. The head would hold the camera and lens in even while walking with the camera and tripod sideways. I never had an issue, jumping over rocks and streams with maximum leverage in a sideways position.

I highly recommend it unless you're going to use much larger or heavier lenses.

P.S. don't forget to remove the adapter ring that comes with the GT2540 when using this tripod, otherwise you will have trouble in the portrait position with the center column all the way down. That adapter ring is for larger ball heads.

I use this head on a Gitzo basalt tripod for a very compact and light in weight system. It appears to be of very high quality and holds my DSLR (Olympus E-510) securely.
