I don't have a lot of experience with tripods, most of the ones I have used are inexpensive. I used to use a Sunpak at school and decided to get one of these for myself. It is just as good if not better than similar Sunpak models. I think the panning control may be a little better. I don't know if I would call it 'lightweight' because I haven't used many tripods but it's sturdy not too heavy.

I pretty much use this only for stationary stuff. I set it up, lock the angle in place and leave it when I'm shooting, so it works perfectly for me. For more advanced usage, or if you're going to be hard on your equipment, you probably want something higher-end.

This tripod is about what you would expect for the price... [$] It supports the camera well, has solid and logical adjustments. I use it for my D70 and a small video camera (about 1.5lbs) for these items it works fine. The D70 with my 70-300 Nikkor was a challenge for my little manfrotto ball-head, but this tripod hold it fine. The video camera can pan pretty smoothly, but the tilt adjustment is always jerky. Still, I wasn't expecting a fluid head [$] If I had to find something to complain about (and I almost always do), the handle is not as adjustable as I would like. It is fine for most positions, but for the occasional low-angle shot, or macro shot it is not in the best place. Also, I am 6'4 and it is a little too low for my comfortable use - I imagine this is a problem for other tripods in this price range, but worth mentioning. Construction is decent - not a bogen but fine for the price.

        Comments about Sony VCTR640 Tripod:

The tripod serves its purpose. It is a good deal for the price. The control over the camera is good, but there is a question of how sturdy the skinny legs of the tripod are. The length of the legs adjust easily. Doesn't travel very well - consider investing in a case.

              Comments about Sony VCTR640 Tripod:

I bought this tripod for my Nex 7. The quality is good. I do not own any other tripods, so I cannot compare it with others. The height adjustment mechanism is very user friendly and quick. The dimensions are exactly as mentioned in the product specifications. It is light weight, but not flimsy. The quick release plate is very useful. The panning and tilting features are user friendly as well. I think it is an excellent companion for a photo enthusiast. A professional photographer may prefer a heavier and longer tripod depending on his/her type of work.

I am really impressed with the quality of this tripod. It sets up in seconds, is really lightweight, is sturdy and has smooth pan for vids. Quality far exxceeds price! I also purchased the Slik Tripod Case Medium which works perfectly with this. Light enough to carry all day.

Overall good workmanship on the head. The legs are very thin when they are fully extended, making it pretty wobbly. I purchased this for Photography/Filming. The light weight design just didn't have enough heft and stability.

This is a very nice and stable tripod for the money. Panning is smooth. I have used it inside and out with good results. It might be tough at full extension on soft grass, but otherwise I think it is up to most needs of a casual photog or video artist.

I use this for filming basketball games at a high school and this works great! The pan and tilt are very smooth and easy to operate. The tripod extension isn't that tall, only about 5' 5" or so, which is a down side. But in general I would highly recommend this tripod for any users.

                                  Comments about Sony VCTR640 Tripod:

I purchased this tripod for travel, as I was looking for a lightweight, compact tripod for my prosumer video camera. I have two Gitzo tripods for my photography, but hardly need their weight to handle an 18 oz camcorder.

I have just taken the tripod for a two week trip, and it was quick to setup, fit into my carry-on luggage, and is quite lightweight. I even used it for my DSLR for a few images, but wouldn't leave the tripod unattended with that weight.

Even with setup on the beach, the folding legs stayed clear of sand and the flip lock mechanism was flawless. The head was fluid and quite satisfactory. I would note that there was shake when using in strong winds (20mph+), but that's to be expected with such a lightweight tripod.

One note to consider. It set up wonderfully on flat surfaces, but, was a bit more challenging to level on uneven surfaces because of the inter-locking leg support. If you are using primarily for uneven terrain, then I would think twice about this model.

The unit was good for a while.

The camera holding lever on the plate came loose and would'nt stay if put back. Finally got lost. Now this is tripod is a piece of junk.

                                          Pros:
                                          - Lightweight, easy to use.
                                          - Levels easily.
                                          - Good for panning, smooth movements.

                                          Cons:
                                          - It's made of plastic so it's not gonna last forever.
                                          - The legs are pretty skinny at the bottom.

Overall, really great. I would buy another one.

I used it for a 6-hr audition because I wanted something quick, light and durable. It is VERY light and stable and my JVC-HM100 fit perfectly on it. I have other very expensive tripods, but whenever I'm out and about and I just need static shots, this is the tripod I will carry with me. The panning is not bad either. For the price, this tripod is a no brainer! Did I mention "light?"

                                                  Comments about Sony VCTR640 Tripod:

I use it to film and take pictures on my sony hx200 and it works great, feels sturdy enough. The manual and standard head feels smooth enough. I also used it with my 23'' glide gear slider and it feels pretty sturdy as well.
What's great about this product is the price, the quality and how smooth the head flows.
This is only a basic tripod, nothing professional or extreme about it. Only a good support to stop some shaking and movement when taking pictures, a perfect tool when I do interviews for example.
                                                  Hope this review helps.
