Questions? Ask our experts:

This is an Interfit 36" (91 cm), Silver Umbrella. Silver umbrellas are used to bounce light onto a subject. They provide softening, with a harder shadow than a regular white umbrella. Light loss is usually ~1.5 f/stop compared to the same light used direct, bare light. The black backing cuts down on stray light.

Use this size umbrella for a 1 - 2 person half-length portrait.

I know the strobist guy recommends the Westcott Collapsible umbrellas, and their white umbrellas are great, but Westcot's silver umbrellas are "soft silver" which means "as dull as duct tape" and eats way too much flash output.

These umbrellas have much more specularity and put out about as much light as my 51" PLM, making them very usable with speedlights at a distance from the subject.

I purchased this umbrella because I was looking for something portable. It's about the size of a Manfrotto nano + umbrella bracket - I just bongo tie it to the stand & I'm good to go. It's a bit taller & sticks out over the top, but that's not much of a problem. Since it's not listed in the specs, it's just shy of 25" when collapsed.

While the Westcott collapsible is smaller when folded up & larger when open, it's not so much smaller or so much larger that I'm willing to give up the 2+ extra stops it eats.

If I don't want the specularity of the shiny silver, I can always use the (also very portable) white Westcott collapsible, though I lose a bit of output & directionality, which contaminate my indoor pictures with more room tone & advertising my presence to the world outdoors. If I can't carry both, I'd rather carry this one, unless I know I'm doing beauty shots with sweaty models & don't want the specularity.

The build is rather flimsy. I've already bent the umbrella shaft by attempting to reposition the umbrella without first loosening the bracket - something I can do with my sturdier umbrellas, but for the price I'm not worried about that- they're easy to replace.

Output is about 1/3 of a stop less than my 51" PLM, which is close to raw flash output, though I forget the numbers.

Until Westcott produces a bright, specular collapsible silver umbrella, this will be my choice for travel gigs.

It diffuses light and it doesn't fall apart when you open it -- so I guess it's perfect. Does just what you'd expect from it.

Not even a plastic bag is included, so if you are doing an outdoor shotting you have to keep it into any other bag to keep it clean.

                Comments about INT262 Silver Umbrella - 36" (91 cm):

I'm pretty impressed with these umbrellas. The silver lining is very reflective and works very well. The majority of the silver lining reflects nearly all the light, though I have noticed a couple of thin spots, mainly around seams or where the fabric was stressed (tight bends, etc). In those spots, you can see light coming through the back of the umbrella, but it isn't enough to cause any issues with light spill.

Overall, I'm very pleased with these and will probably buy more once these wear out. The build quality seems good for the price and I don't expect any problems with them.

These are 36" straight across, tip to tip. Some other brands measure around the arc to sound larger than they are, but these are actually measured straight across - giving an accurate measurement of how big they are when opened.

While this umbrella is not the most durable one that I've seen, it's certainly strong enough for my needs. I do a bit of real estate videography and this umbrella helps to soften and even out my lighting.

I purchased a two mono-light kit about a year ago and gave my old umbrella's away. Bad idea. The umbrellas weren't shoot through. After using them a few months I realized that I really needed shoot-throughs as well as the ones that came with the kit.

These were not expensive and seem well enough made to last a long time.

                            Comments about INT262 Silver Umbrella - 36" (91 cm):
