The DCX2496 ULTRADRIVE PRO from Behringer is a digital loudspeaker management system, that provides excellent audio quality, along with a comprehensive feature list. It allows for precise set-up of multiple loudspeaker arrays, suitable for live sound, fixed installations that require control of loudspeaker systems, and other contractor-installed applications.

Each of the three-inputs and six-outputs have fixed processing blocks, including gain, delay, EQ and dynamic EQ on the input channels, and gain, crossover, EQs, limiter and delays on the output side. One of the inputs can accept a stereo AES/EBU digital signal. An integrated sample rate converter assists in accepting various sample rates. Additionally, an internal input-sum signal is easily set-up.

Four different mono and stereo output operating modes are available, all with individual crossover filter types with selectable roll-off characteristics. Input and output delays allow for time adjusting signals to compensate for ambient temperature changes or for adjusting arrival time differences for individual speaker clusters. EQs can be used for both musical enhancement or for level-dependent equalization. Brick-wall limiters guarantee speaker protection.

Remote control of one or several units can be accomplished utilizing downloadable software for a Windows based computer. Set-ups can be saved to the software, or to an optional PCMCIA card for the ultimate in portability. Servo-balanced, gold-plated XLR connectors for all inputs and outputs guarantee excellent connectivity.

Comments about Behringer DCX2496 ULTRADRIVE PRO Loudspeaker Management System:

I use the DCX2496 as part of my home theater sound system to provide a crossover to my pair of Definitive Tech Supercube subs and my 8 unit custom built front drivers as well as equalization for front and center speaker systems. The ability to precisely and independently control crossover frequency and filter type and then store settings in memory for use when switching to various input devices is phenomenal. I use a 1/3 octave graphic EQ but the additional parametric EQ of the DCX2496 adds precise control of frequencies between the available bands of the graphic. The precision phase control is useful in elimination of standing waves in my listening room with some troublesome recordings. I plan to purchase another one soon since I can't imagine being without one now.

Comments about Behringer DCX2496 ULTRADRIVE PRO Loudspeaker Management System:

I use DCX for two purposes: 1) PA amp+speaker control, as it was intended; and 2) real-time room equalization, before moving to a smaller, dedicated DSP controller like miniDSP. The DCX can make changes on the fly, which the miniDSP cannot, which allows me to test different crossover types and slopes to find the best design, then lock it down in the little box.For PA control, the DCX seems well suited, and has enough control and range to handle any stereo 3-way or mono 5-way setup out there. It can also be used to send a stereo pair to three different 2-way setups in different rooms/areas, with individual adjustment for each pair. The only thing that I wish it had was a mic input for real-time analysis like my Driverack PA. Then again, it costs a lot less than the Drive rack, while doing a few things the Drive rack can't. For HiFi room equalization and setup, it's not perfectly matched. The DCX only accepts XLR inputs and outputs, so a set of adapters is required. Also, the ideal signal levels are around +15dBu or so, with +20dBu or +22dBu peaks, much stronger than a typical stereo system can provide. There is a 15dB gain boost available in the DCX, but even that falls a little short of using the full +22dBu range; it also requires padding the output by 15dB, giving up about 3 bits of output range for the DACs. But for testing, one can ignore the extra noise floor and focus on the settings; then, when choices of crossover type, frequency, and slope are complete, one can worry about matching the levels. Is it a perfect tool? No, but it allows quick comparisons of different setups, something that nothing in its price range can provide. At B+H's current price, I'm thinking about buying another one!

Applied in an Hi-fi system to separate signals to mains and subs LFE.

I like the flexibility and endless capability of the device. A well laid out menu system. Did not need the manual to configure.

Can't find anything I don't like as of yet.

Comments about Behringer DCX2496 ULTRADRIVE PRO Loudspeaker Management System:

I needed an eq, crossover and delay in my rack for 3 sets of speakers (bi-amped stage monitors) and after doing extensive research as well as being familiar with higher priced options, I decided on this unit. I highly recomend downloading and experimenting with the software before you purchase! I use the DBX driverack 260 in my main rack and have the JBL srx712m's tuned per JBL's specs with that unit but cannot enter exact specs into the Behringer - the software will not allow such fine tunning as the driverack!
At roughly half the price of the driverack, I decided the ULTRADRIVE PRO was an acceptable compromise.

With this product you never know if it will turn on or not, or if it will stay working for longer than a week. in the last month or so i have used 4 of these guys. and 3 have already been replaced. Now don't get me wrong. these units are GREAT when they work and for the price which no one can beat! but when they stop working and you don't have a spare it can hurt a lot!

Comments about Behringer DCX2496 ULTRADRIVE PRO Loudspeaker Management System:

Should have known, given Behringer's reputation, but we really needed these devices to multi-amp a couple of three-way systems. I ordered two (one for backup given the reputation issue) and a friend ordered one. Of the two I ordered, only one functioned properly when first turned on. My friend wasn't even that lucky. So, one for three. Acceptable in baseball, but not for our needs.

When my friend called in about his, he got a replacement in a week. His return and the new unit must have crossed paths in shipping. Me? I went the Email route, returned it, and then waited two+ weeks for the replacement (which thankfully works). Lesson: it pays to call and gripe.

I have many electronic crossovers by everyone from dbx to BSS. Since we keep the best stuff on the road it is packed up most of the time or not in the shop.

I needed something for T&D that I can keep in the shop to test and tune cabinets. This has done the trick for me. It does sound good and I was able to set it up from the front panel in about 15 minutes for a 3 way stereo with delays, EQ and some limiting on the outputs to go with our boxes.

Not hearing them side by side, but it works well and the setting changes measured in the shop worked out well on the BSS and Ashly's in the field. I think we will get a few more and change out a monitoring rigs analog stuff.
