Questions? Ask our experts:

The EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens from Canon is a high quality "L" series wide angle zoom lens for full frame and APS-C size DSLR cameras. It combines one high-precision molded glass aspherical element and two replica aspherical lenses to achieve the extended zoom range, while also correcting for common aberrations that arise during zooming. A Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass element minimizes the chromatic aberration of magnification which tends to occur with wide-angle lenses, to help eliminate color bleed along the edges of the subject and achieve high image contrast and resolution.

The lens' minimum focusing distance is just 11" (28cm) throughout its entire range of focal lengths, which makes it very useful for close-up work. All of the focusing and zooming action is done internally, with no changes in the size of the lens. Its ultrasonic autofocus motor enables smooth and silent autofocus action and manual focus override in One Shot AF mode allows precise manual focusing without switching into MF mode.

It only uses lead-free optics to help the environment, and features a circular diaphragm for improved background blur. The housing is water and dust resistant to help ensure reliable performance for both professionals and enthusiasts. Like many "L" lenses, it uses 77mm filters, but also has a rear gelatin filter slot behind the lens mount that can hold three gel filters.

This lens is a Canon 'EF' series lens, indicating it is for use with full-frame cameras. However, it also works with APS-C format DSLRs and offers a 35mm focal length equivalence of 27-64mm, making it an ideal medium-aperture standard zoom lens.

A super wide-angle zoom lens for full-frame DSLR and 35mm film cameras that offers a 27-64mm focal length equivalent when used on APS-c size sensors.
Uses three aspherical lens elements and Canon Super UD ultra-low dispersion glass for reduced aberrations and overall sharp, high contrast imaging
An ultrasonic autofocus motor provides fast, smooth and quiet AF action, particularly important when shooting video.
Manual focus override enables precise manual focusing even when in One Shot AF mode.
Internal zooming and focusing systems
As a Canon "L" series lens it provides professional levels of moisture and dust resistance.
Circular aperture diaphragm for better, more natural looking background blurring
Accepts 77mm filters, as well as gelatin filters at the rear of the lens.

I use this lens with the canon 5D MK III. It replaces the 16-35mm f2.8L. I like the 17-40 because it's small, light, and less expensive compared to the 16-35. It uses a 77mm filter like my other Canon zooms. The f4 is relatively fast, and meets my needs for an ultra wide angle on a full frame sensor. There are compromises with the lens, compred to the 16-35, but I have not found any faults with it.

I've just gotten started with it, but I'm using this lens on a 5DmkII. It's easily my widest lens, and is quite wide on the 5D. I've never used the 16-35 or the 14mm. While it's not exactly what I would call a cheap lens, it is cheap for an L lens, and so I would expect some compromises to have been made. While I've not done any sort of side by side comparison, I would say it's not the sharpest lens, particularly at the edges, and it does have some vignetting. This seems to be the case even when stopped down and zoomed, although these issues are probably worst at 17mm at f4.On the upside, I do like the metal construction and weather sealing of an L lens. It opens up to f4 regardless of focal length, which is fast enough to use the precision focusing screen on the 5DmkII (it's visibly darker than the normal screen, but usable). I'm not unhappy with the distortion it produces. Most importantly, it's a seriously wide, Canon L lens for only [$] The 16-35 and the 14 are both twice as expensive.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

Purchased this lens to use with my Canon 6D and while it may not have that last 1mm of focal width or the step up quality of the f/2.8, for the relative price, it's pretty spectacular.

I mostly shoot still landscape for fun and my shots with this lens have been some of my best ever especially around low light / night and long exposures.

The range is notably wider than your typical kit lens, stabilization works well, the detail solid though a little soft outside (or maybe it's just my shooting), and it's easy to adjust. Much of my use is on long hikes and in very cold places and everything has held up beautifully for that though there is enough of a lip on the front of the lens for small particles to catch under and it does fog up quickly.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

Having 17mm and 35mm together was exciting to me. And mostly it will be used for wide shots so f4 was more than enough for me.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

I saw this lens on the B&H website and ordered it not realizing it was not stabilized. At 74 years old, I am not as steady as I used to be so returned it. Those images (see attached) I took with the camera braced were very nice. It's a winner for the not so shaky or tripod crowd!!!!

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

This lens performs very well for large view sweeping landscape work and also very well for close-up imaging in rather confined spaces such as in a cavern. The f/4 aperture and L series quality glass and optics make this one of my best lenses. There is nothing that I don't like about it! It is not f/2.8 nor does it have IS; but, since I shoot with it almost always on a tripod, those are features I don't really need and am glad I didn't pay for. For me, this is a great lens and I am really pleased with it.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

Canon tries to give the consumer a chance to own a relatively inexpensive "L" lens with this one but they also take away some important features in order to make the lens more affordable...

There is no IS (image stabilization)
There is a 4.0 fixed aperture opening where it should have been a 2.8 fixed.

Its basically a consumer lens with a red stripe and an "L"printed on it.

My wife and I have shared one of these for a few years. When it came time to buy a second wide angle we looked at other options but finally opted for a second of the 17-40.
This lens covers a nice range of angle of view and does it at a reasonable price.

I have used a friend of mine s lens a few times before I buy one. I buy mine to shoot an interior of a new house. My 24-105 was not quite wide enough to get the shots I wanted. I was using it on a tripod with just the ambient light with my 5D and got some great shot. My other use has been landscape. It allowed me to take picture of the huge live oaks in Florida without cutting off the limbs. I would recommend it to a friend.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

On a full-frame camera, anything shot at 17-22mm is basically unusable. Faces, bodies, buildings, etc. at the edges of these photos will be completely deformed.

Some people will suggest that if you shoot the "right" way, you won't have this problem. But that is basically just saying it doesn't work for most shots. It only works for very few shots, which defeats the whole purpose of having a wide angle lens like this.

22-40mm it will produce some really sharp images.

Otherwise you would be better off buying a lower end crop sensor camera and a Tokina 11-16mm (which I've owned in the past and works very well) or maybe saving up for the expensive Canon 16-35m (which I've never owned and may possibly have similar problems).

I use this lens with a Canon 6D camera. So far, I've shot only about 200 still photos and about 15 video clips with this lens. I've used both AF and MF in shooting my still photos. All the still photos and the videos I've taken look sharp to me, and that's all that matters to me. I'm not very knowlegeable about photography, so I do not know of anything that's not great about this lens.

I shoot a lot of large indoor spaces, so the 17-40 is great at capturing my entire (huge) subjects with great clarity and without much distortion. I've heard mixed reviews about this lens in low light but have yet to experience that problem. This lens is so versatile and takes crisp, beautiful photos. It's a little big heavy but not enough to offset the benefits. I'm so glad I got it.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

In 2013 my trusty Rebel XTi was wearing out with a sticking shutter. Very happy with Canon I decided to take a step up to the 60D, I also treated myself to my first "L" series lens, the 17-40mm f/4. I was never happy with the lens; I blamed it on the lack of IS. The 60D actually took better photos using the "S" series 18-135 f/4 IS. This year I decided to add another lens to my collection, as a read a ton of reviews of different lenses I realized people that use full frames cameras (such as 5D & 6D) had much more favorable reviews of "L" series lenses than folks that use crop-censor cameras (such as 60D). After a lot of research, I decided to buy a 5D MarkIII full-frame camera. This 17-40mm lens is 100% better than it was on the 60D. The field of view is much wider and 100% sharp and crisp. Even without IS everything is sharp while taking hand held shots of moving subjects. I've since bought a couple more "L" series lenses with outstanding results. I now love these "L" lenses, especially the 17-40mm! My advice is spend the extra money and buy a full-frame camera! Paired with "L" series lenses the photos are outstanding, even at night I can take hand held shots that turn out clear!

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

I find this lens is extremely useful for video production, especially for weddings when you are in a tight room and can't back up anymore. The f/4 is a little limiting, but I hardly ever am using that while I'm free hand holding the camera due to tight focus. The controls are smooth and I haven't noticed any distortion in the videos.

It's canon L lens, so the construction is pretty good and solid. I used it with 6D for wedding and landscape photography.

Since I normally shoot only landscape and most during the day, this lens was perfect for me. I did not need the wider aperture, and even if I use the lens at night I have a nice tripod. Lens is sharp. and it is lightweight. I use it on a Canon 5D. Did not notice any vignetting.

I use this lens for real estate, weddings, and music videos. People love the clear focus and how the center subject really pops out. Also a great lens to have when you're on the go. Zoomable to 40mm gives you a lot of leeway for a wide angle lens.

I shoot interiors for a real estate company and this is by far my favorite lens to use. Its a beautiful lens with crystal clear images. The distortion is definitely noticeable which is a downside but is easily fixed with Lightroom's lens corrections.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

This lens is a great value. It is sharp in the corners if you stop it down to f:8 and is weather sealed. For this money, a great lens.
