Whirlwind QBOX - Audio Line Tester/Cable Tester/Test Tone Generator
The Whirlwind Qbox is an in-line, 9V battery-operated beltpack audio testing utility device, designed for live sound, studio maintenance, and installation applications.
The Whirlwind Qbox includes a microphone, a speaker, a test tone generator, outputs for standard headphones, a 1/4" jack for a line-in or a 2k Ohm(telephone) earpiece out, along with voltage presence LEDs for confirming phantom or intercom power.
The Whirlwind Qbox is suitable for multiple purposes including hands-free intercom use when connected to another Qbox. It provides a mic- or line-level tone for activating a signal path, or identifying a specific cable in a pile of cable ends, and can also be used to monitor a standard 3-wire intercom feed of talkback from the main audio console.
- The SOURCE section of the Qbox lets you send a tone or the signal from the built-in condenser mic at mic or line levels
- The SPEAKER volume control lets you confirm incoming signals at mic or line level
- Built-in amplifier provides up to 60dB of gain
- Attenuator switch selects output level to XLR or 1/4 in. outputs
- Tone/Internal Switch selects source to be provided to XLR and 1/4 in. outputs
- Volume control adjusts level sent to speaker or headphone output
- Stereo Phone Jack allows the use of stereo or mono headphones while disconnecting the internal speaker

Use this all the time to check, cables/lines/circuits. Absolutley invaluable to anyone on the "front line" however the on-off switch on mine no longer functions properly. The slightest tap switches the unit on and it is hit and miss whether it ever switches off.
I now have to keep the battery disconnected and only connect it when I actually want to use the unit. Which is a shame. Better build would have got it five stars.

I would recommend this product to any audio professional that is looking for a way to complete line check in a speedy manner. The l.e.d.s on the top tell you if phantom power or intercom voltage is present and the tone generator can output a mic level signal too. I have used this product extensively and can only say I wish I had four of them!

The QBOX does make the testing & verification of a variety of cable setups quite easy. Although any of the tests the QBOX can do can be replicated using simple DVM & a break-out box, none are as easy to use (in the field) as the QBOX. During events (recording or just setting up initially), sometimes things don't work as expected. To try to isolate and retest a veriety of equipment can be very time consuming. But since most problems are cable-oriented, the cables should be the first to tested. And the QBOX allows a fast testing cycle too. It looks like the QBOX will be very robust due to its construction and simplicity.

this product is indispensable if you are a professional audio engineer. I would have a head full of gray hair by now and a bunch of unhappy clients if I didn't have this tool. instead I trouble shoot problems with astonishing speed that keeps me out of therapy and my clients calling me back for more.

Only cons are: headset output has a lot of hiss, would be nice if it is cleaner. Also have noticed that touching the volume know can induce low level hum into the headphone output.

I bought the QBox to replace an original model which had seen 14 years service in Sports TV. Considering the abuse it received I am genuinely amazed it lasted that long. I have no idea how any A2 working in TV OBs ("remotes" as you colonials call them) can function without one of Whirlwind's little boxes..............
