Fostex T50RP Studio Headphones with Improved Transient Response

You Pay: $129.99

The Fostex T50RP is a moderately priced and comfortable set of professional headphones, featuring the proprietary RP Diaphragm technology, which provides very good transient peak handling, combined with Neodymium magnets and discreet internal damping for an unusually extended frequency response. The result is a smooth, natural monitoring experience at higher playback levels with minimized distortion and coloration.

The cushioned earpieces fit securely and feature adjustable aluminum rails that actually stay in place over long periods of use. The cable is detachable and features a locking connector entry jack on the left earpiece. The T50RP's are competitive with some of the higher profile headphones now available on the market that are several times it's price, for studio recording and mixing monitoring purposes.

I took quite a bit of time selecting inexpensive phones. I've been into high end audio for years and I have some experience with cans, though I normally listen with speakers. It's hard to sort through reviews because of different experience levels and expectations. I decided to give the T50 a try because some people reported they thought they were better stock, than the Samson 850 (Superlux 668b). After 2 days of burn-in, they have a very nice midrange but are a little deficient at both extremes. Covering the ports is really all it takes to hear the full range potential. Oddly enough, the treble also came in by doing this. Mine are now modded with Shure 840 pads and a tiny bit of acoustic fill. I still have the stock enclosure, but I have all but the bottom port closed off from the outside with modelling clay. I also removed the damper on the inside bottom ports and cut away the grill cloth over the driver. This review however is for stock T50. Without doing all that, just cover the bottom ports with something and the performance is pretty amazing. The bottom octaves fill in, the top is all there and not screechy or harsh and the overall sound is more natural and real than I ever expected. The bass now goes all the way down without being unnaturally emphasised. I doubt if these are the right phones to drive directly with portable devices. They can take some power and I'd recommend a headphone amp or home receiver.

I'm a headphone person (currently have 6 sets - all high end models). Decided to try the Fostex T50 because I wanted to hear the orthodynamic sound for a minimal investment. After breaking them in, my summary would be that their strength is the midrange - clear and detailed. Highs are a little recessed and the bass is rather light. The T50s also take a little more power to drive than most other phones. But, for the money, they are a good value.

Using them mostly in the office, via a NI Audio 2 DJ interface. Done some 50hrs on them so far. Comfortable on average size head. I like that the bass is not too emphasized - very neutral sounding overall. Even at higher volume, I don't feel fatigue on the ear. I mostly listen to techno. The only concern I have is the cable did not make good contact with the phone at first, and made cracking noises when I tried to adjust it, but this has since disappeared. Quite happy overall.

            Audiophile Quality After Simple Modding

Comments about Fostex T50RP Studio Headphones:

Out of the box, the sound quality is very mids-centric, with weak bass and treble. Disappointed, I almost returned it, as I doubted if modding could really improve the sound. I am glad I stuck with it as the modding is simple to do:

                  1. Fill the driver baffle cavities with modeling clay to add mass and reduce sound vibration
                  2. Attach 1.5 x 1.5 cm 3M tape on driver to increase treble quality
                  3. Damp the cups with Dynamat + adhesive foam to improve bass response
                  4. Stuff cups with torn up cotton balls
                  5. Replace stock pads with Shure 840 pads

It took me 3 trials to tune the sound to my liking. The transformation is quite amazing. The warm and smooth mids are still there, but the bass and treble have improved so significantly that I now have a balanced headphone with bass impact as good as my Denon D2000 and mids/treble/soundstage as good as my Audio Technica ATH-AD900. But at a price tag much lower than either of these highly rated headphones.

Comments about Fostex T50RP Studio Headphones:

(Modified unit) I cant really add to much to the great reviews but I can say I have never heard such tight precise crisp sound in headphones before. Even stock just has a precision that just catches you by surprise. That sid, Modding is the way to go. I did a bmf#3 and it really opens them up and spreads the frequencies out. For fun I played with an eq and was shocked at the results. With a little bass boost, mid drop and high boost this things came alive! They sound huge and sparkle. Without a doubt my favorite cans right now. My poor dynamics are going to be neglected for a while. The ortho precision is addictive.

My "fun" non flat EQ setting (extends bass and adds the open airiness. Measured in notches in realtek HD EQ so YMMV)

Comments about Fostex T50RP Studio Headphones:

I already have some very good headphones : Shure SRH440 and SRH840, Grado SR80i, Audio-Technica ATH-M50 and ATH-AD700. But the Fostex T50RP with Shure SRH840 earpads is in another class. The transparency, transient response and overall neutrality is unbelievable at this price. They don't exhibit the "impressive" sound of some competitors, like massive bass and overly extended highs. Instead, they are true to the source, natural and accurate.

I bought these headphones in order to make modifications to them. The orthodynamic driver is a really high-end driver, but the casing on these headphones is relatively cheap. As they are sold, they are an OK deal for the money (though I'd go with an entry level Sennheiser for a bit more if possible), but if you are into making headphone mods and DIY sort of stuff, these are a great set to start with.

This headphone is good. However, at the end, I was just feeling like there was more to this set than I was hearing. The modding community can attest to that.

These headphones, in their stock form, are mediocre in comparison to my other sets(listed below). I would not use an unmodded pair of these due to the existence of my other headphones. Mod them and you can get some really, really good sound. But as they are, there are better options.

These headphones are a great value. They sound better out of the box than the [$] headphones I returned last week. I expect the sound to improve with time. I will be modding them based on suggestions in the head-fiorg forums and expect these mods will make the T50RPs an even better bargain. The item description makes it sound as if a 3.5mm adapter is included. It is not. "Detachable 1/4" Stereo Phone Plug - 1/8" Stereo Mini Plug" is talking about two ends of a single cable. I bought a Monster knockoff cable for <[$] from [*] and it works well for my iPhone. Get these!

If you want good headphones that perform well right out of the box, there are better ones on the market than the T50RP. The T50RP has lovely mid frequencies, so vocals sound very good. But the bass and treble don't extend very far. But bear in mind that these headphones have orthodynamic drivers (not the dynamic drivers found in most headphones) and plenty of potential. If you care to open them up and modify them with some cotton wool, plasticine and some acoustic foam, you can create some pretty fantastic headphones. Tight, deep bass and clear, detailed highs add to the aforementioned mids.Really, a two- or three-star product with five-star potential.

As I received them, their clarity was surprising, however, their frequency response, especially in the bass range, was a bit lacking and the pads could be a little deeper. The included detachable cord has only a 1/4" end and no converter included, so be aware of that.If you're looking at these in the first place you're probably aware of how they can be modded. Countless suggestions are available on the internet, and usually consist of padding the insides of the cup with various materials and fitting better pads. I myself used Shure HPAEC840 pads from @.In the end, these are headphones with great potential at a fantastic price, and a fun little DIY project to squeeze the sound you want out of them.

Comments about Fostex T50RP Studio Headphones:

I listen to all kinds of music. I am not a true audiophile but I am a musician and I insist on the best quality reproduction I can afford. Great cans are cheaper than great speakers, so I use these almost every day.

I've had high end cans from Sennheiser and been disappointed with poor durability and distorted sound. These Fostex T50RP give by far the most even and true sound I've heard. You might think they are "flat" when you first hear them, but listen to well-recorded music for an hour and you'll start to feel like you're right there in the orchestra (or drum circle or whatever).

You'll appreciate the evenness across the whole audio range. "Flat" means "even" and "even" is good. Go ahead and use your EQ to boost some ranges if you like - at least these cans will deliver exactly what you dial in with no added emphasis or masking of their own.

I like the closed shell because I want to shut out other sounds, and because I can wear these when I'm recording. If they had open backs some of the sound would be picked up by the mic.

My first pair of T50RP lasted nearly 10 years before the pads started to flake apart. I'm replacing them with the exact same thing because they are THAT GOOD. Buy soon, they seem to be disappearing from the market. Some guys have figured out how to modify them for even better sound, but I think that's gilding the lily.

Comments about Fostex T50RP Studio Headphones:

I had been reading about these in a major audiophile forum, and pretty much it got bashed for it's stock sound. Im glad they were 100% wrong. These sound amazing. they're a wee bit hard to drive properly, but can get to ear hurting volumes from my iphone 4s direct. Why i say to drive properly I mean to drive transducer excursion to get full bass. However driven directly from my iphone4s/itouch 4, they can and do thump pretty hard, but you can tell the device's tiny amps are straining to feed this monster. The sound is clear, and clean. It has a black, and I mean a pure black background, however they do meticulously pick out every little nuance, and detail in a song, so badly recorded songs are given no forgiveness, everything in the song will be heard. The sound stage is quite expansive, and accurate, despite what i've been told, with sounds traveling above, below, front, sides, and back of my head. These transducers(which are Planar Magnetic/Isodynamic/Orthodynamic, I prefer calling them Planar Magnetic, and orthodynamic is a Yamaha term for their own) are blistering fast, making even expensive dynamic drivers seem slow in comparison. The T50rp reproduce music as it is recorded to a t. Bass if it is there you WILL hear, and feel it. I ran a subwoofer test through these, and they pounded it pretty good. Otherwise it might seem anemic. A lot really depends on the recording. Mids, and vocals are clear, fluid, and realistic, as close to natural as you can get. Highs sparkle, letting you hear clicks of drumsticks as they hit the heads, plucks of picks on guitar strings, breathing of the vocalist even, they really do present everything in a song, clear as window glass, hence why they are unforgiving on badly recorded tracks.

Build quality is astounding, the ear cups are made with a heavy grade plastic, and seem solid, and sturdy, the headband a metal strip, sealed in a rubber pad, that to me is comfortable. the earpads are a fake leather material, that actually feels pretty good, and the stock cable which I didnt use because it's 1/4 inch, and I didnt have a adaptor, I simply used a line out cord, which works fine. The stock cable tho is very long, and seems very well made.

All and all for a entry into the typically very expensive realm of planar magnetic headphones, for such a low price, these headphones really shine, and mods to them apparently can make them sound even better.

Really a nice pair of headphones, I would suggest performing some modifications on them to get the full benefits of drivers. Also, these things need an amp, typical portable players really won't work well.

Stock sounds quite good, really. Bass is somewhat feeble, and resonance muddies the waters a bit. After ~10 days of tinkering with mods, I'm fully happy with the way they sound. Which is stunningly good.

Just bought my 3rd pair from B & H. Bought the first pair around 1987, second pair around 2002. And I use them pretty much everyday. For my money these have the best low end of any studio reference headphones. Bass players and drummers love them especially. Also if you record any kind of voiceovers they are wonderful. They sit a little more lightly on you ears, so if you are in an all day session it helps with fatigue. I have tried the Seinheisers and the Sonys and they are certainly real good, but Fostex T50RPs are still the Gold Standard for me.
