The Pro Studio Rail System is a modular overhead lighting suspension system which can be expanded or modified to your requirements. It provides precise positioning of lights with ease and speed, eliminating the clutter of light stands and power cables on the floor. The systems utilize a combination of rails, carriages, telescopic posts, and manual spring/cable assisted or motorized pantographs.

This is an 3 Pantograph System, for a large-size studio.

Aluminum rails in this kit are 9' 10" and 13' 3".
This kit features 2 stationary, and 2 moving rails.
The Pantograph supports a load of up to 26lbs suspended from 1' 6" to 6' 6" using only the friction device, while loads up to a maximum of 40lbs require the use of the optional springs. The pantograph can be adjusted to keep suspended loads from 2lbs to 10lbs perfectly balanced. The colored ring can adjust the pantograph's friction; this will ensure that the load remains stable when set in position, but that it will move smoothly up and down when necessary. It is advisable to use springs to aid raising the pantograph.
Each pantograph extends from 1'6" to 6'6".
Nylon wheels with metal ball bearings ensure safe operation with loads of up to 39.5 lbs.
Extruded aluminum rails enable efficient utilization of studio perimeter walls and corners for back lighting, drapes, and background paper.
All components are black, to eliminate unwanted reflections.
Accessories may be ordered separately, to augment and customize the system to your specific requirements.

Note:
Sliding rails cannot be joined. To connect two fixed rails use code FF3208.
You must always support the junction of two rails with a ceiling attachment placed on the junction itself.

Note:
Moving rails longer than 118" must be supported with more than two fixed rails.
The maximum distance between any of these fixed rails is 78.7".

Comments about Manfrotto Pro Studio Rail System 43 Kit for 3 Lights:

I'm a photo hobbyist, with a hope to be a part time professional someday. I installed this rail system in my basement on a 8' ceiling (at some time in the future, I will move this rail system to my unattached garage with has 12' ceilings, but I need to add heating and A/C first.) I bought the rail system because I already had studio flash with stands, but I spent more time to setup the lights than I did using the lights. Now with the rails, setup is very fast!! It's worth the money to reduce setup time!

Pros: I really like how quick it is to use, and it's safer too as the light stands and cables were tripping hazards. Its light weight, yet very strong. The pantographs are compact at its min height (10.6")! With my soft boxes, the pantographs extend all the way to the ground. I like the color of the rails and pantographs.

Cons: Ordering plus shipping took 24 days. Nothing was damaged except for light nicks on the rails, especially the rail ends. The pantographs don't come with any "springs" to help with the weight. I definitely need some Type 4 red springs, ...and in my opinion they should have been included with the kit. There are little no installation instructions, so I had to do some math to figure out the spacing of the fixed rails to ensure adequate articulation of the moving rails. The ceiling mounting brackets are good and solid, but the screw holes are more than 2" apart, so if attaching to floor joist 2x4's, I had to drill new holes thru the brackets. The so called "end stops" are 3" long screws that over extend and were causing damage to the some of the walls (I replace with my own shorter screws). The ends of the rails are slightly sharp as well, so if they come into contact with a wall or anything else, they will create scratches (I'm still looking for a protective boot that I can slip over the ends.) The pantographs are sturdy, but if you have a large soft box, it can "flex" the pantographs. I'm attaching counter weights to the lights to accommodate this. Counter weights are not available thru Manfrotto, but I found some at the local professional photographer store ($40 per counter weight). The wire hanging kits are just plastic, nothing rotates. They "squeak" when sliding them, ...I recommend the ones with roller bearings, ...but these roller bearings are pricy. The electric power cables didn't come with the kit either, I had to order the 40' cables separately (again, I believe this should be part of the kit). The cables don't come with the outlet receptacle either. The "safety cables" don't fit on my Einstein studio lights, and I haven't figured out yet how to correct this. Lastly, make sure you wipe clean the rails themselves before adding the brackets with wheels, ...any dirt or debris will stick to the plastic wheel and make a noise when moving. I have taken photos of each of these issues and would be willing to share upon request.

Comments about Manfrotto Pro Studio Rail System 43 Kit for 3 Lights:

Although I just installed this system in our studio, I get a sense from the quality of construction that it will last many years. It has truly opened up the space in our studio and makes changing sets and lights a breeze compared to the use of light stands. I installed in a room with 9 foot ceilings 12 feet by 14 feet. Although ten feet ceilings would be ideal, the height is not a problem for light placement 90 percent of the time. Eight feet ceilings is probably too low. No problem wit hairlights for anyone under 6'3".
