Tamron Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS

You Pay: $499.00

This Di lens is currently the most compact and lightest in the history of fast zoom lenses. Its compactness makes it look and feel like an ordinary standard zoom lens, yet provides the versatility that a fast constant maximum aperture offers and will definitely reshape photographic horizons.

Features like LD glass elements and Internal Focusing put this lens in the same category of professional lenses as much bigger and more expensive Tamron lenses.

LD glass elements reduces various aberrations while minimizing the fall-off of light at the corners

So I'm moving up from 28-135 IS USM, which I'd put as as top-end "tier 1" lens (where the kit lenses live) or entry level "tier 2" where you first encounter the USM lenses but well below the "L" series lenses. I'd put the Tamron way high in "Tier 2". While it doesn't have the IS or USM, the image quality of this lens, along with 2.8 thru the entire focal range, are just so impressive. I've never owned a 24-70L, but based on what I've seen this lens do, it's photos rival what I've seen online when it's being compared to a 24-70L, so I have no reason to not believe the rave reviews/comparisons on IQ - it's really good. I've shot f/2.8 vs f/4 and the f/4 shots are a tad sharper, but the 2.8 shots are very impressive. Back to the 28-135 - it's a huge difference zooming in to say - 70mm and having the tamron stay at 2.8, but the 28-135 can only manage an f/4.5. The resulting image differences are massive!

The USM focus of the 28-135 is faster and quieter than the Tamron, but we're talking degrees of separation. I personally have no issues with how loud it is or how quick the autofocus is - it's fast enough for me. I'm sure there are some venues where this would concern a pro - i'm not there yet :-)

weight-wise it feels about the same as the 28-135. The 28-135 has a loose end and constantly extends out when pointed down (common behavior, not just my lens). The tamron does not exhibit this behavior, which is nice.

The only weird thing on this lens is getting used to the zoom ring going the opposite direction of canon lenses - i'm constantly getting that wrong :-)

If you're looking for professional-level image quality in a great walk around lens that won't break the bank - this is your lens!

attached is a single image shot with the tamron and a single off camera flash.

I bought this lens because of the price and focal range. I am shooting with a Canon EOS 5D. I only have experience with EF mount lenses so this review may not be helpful for nikon users.
I would have preferred to buy the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L lens, but the Tamron is less than half the cost.
Most reviews say this lens has good center sharpness but is a bit softer in the corners. I found this to be true. Other reviews called this lens soft on the wide end, and I have also found this to be true as well. The above problems are balanced out, however, by very good sharpness at 40mm and above. The lens handles colors very well, with little or no chromatic aberration and no there is no significant barrel distortion to speak of.
In short, this is a good general use lens. It is not as nice as the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens, but it is good for the price. If you are looking for a good wide angle lens for shooting high quality landscapes, I would probably invest in the Canon 16-35mm L lens. However, for general all around use this is a good lens for the price.

Compares well versus the canon but at a much lower price. Fast focus and lightweight. Always great service from B&H, good knowledge to compare Tamron with Canon.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I bought this as an upgrade to my 18-55 kit lens that came with my T1i. I planned on using as my everyday lens. The first thing I noticed about this is that it is much heavier than my Canon kit lens...probably a good thing (better quality), but taking a bit to get used to. In the short time I have had it, I have noticed an improvement in sharpness over the other lens, but haven't done any straight comparison shots.

I was lucky to pick up a used version of this lens for $280 for use with my Canon 5D Mark III (as a general walk around lens).I just couldn't see myself spending $[$] for the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II nor did I have the money for it.I agree with the other comments here on sharpness. A little soft at 28 + 75mm at f/2.8. But you only need to go as far as f/3.2 - 3.5 and the softness disappears. Surprisingly sharp at f/2.8 50mm.Fantastic bang for the buck as a solid general lens for my 5D Mark III. Well done Tamron!

With the exception of small flaring issues this is a great entry level lens. I can recommend it if you are in a budget - like I was - but don't expect cutting edge quality.

If you can't afford the real McCoy (Canon L) go with this lens. It's a kept secret. A bit slow but for the price no complaints. Appears to be very well built.

I like it- but I thought it had image stabilization. So in low light, it needs a tri-pod. Bummer for me. What would be the idle carry lens would be the 28-270 with the lower 2.8 with VI. That would be so sweet!
