This Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Lens incorporates a motor built into the lens itself, which gives it the capability to autofocus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40 and D40x). In addition, with the motor built into the lens, focusing will be quieter and more responsive.
The 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di lens is an ultra-compact lens. Its compactness makes it look and feel like an ordinary standard zoom lens, yet provides the versatility that a fast constant maximum aperture offers and will definitely reshape photographic horizons.
Features like LD glass elements and Internal Focusing put this lens in the same category of professional lenses as much bigger and more expensive Tamron lenses.

After dropping 3 Nikon 24-70 mm lenses over the past 6 years then switching to the 24-120 (newest version with coating) I have had nothing but problems. My Nikon lenses would actually get loose in the barrell and the rebber grips would need to be replaced every few months. I shoot 50 Weddings a year personally and weight is also a factor. I did a side by side comparison with all three lenses at f4.0 using my new D4 yes D4 fx camera just released and actually prefer the TAMRON! Not only am I shocked that the quality was equal in detail at ISO 3200 but the image from the tamron was actually a bit lighter as well! I will enjoy the lightweight of this "disposible" lens!!! For the quality and the price If it gets dropped who cares!!! As far as performance and focusing its the same!!! At least on my Big Daddy Camera!!!

When I first purchased this lens, I absolutely loved it, using it on my Fuji S2 and S3 Pro cameras. Focus was relatively fast and accurate and sharpness was acceptable. Then I purchased a full-frame camera (D700). Edge to Edge sharpness is absolutely TERRIBLE on this camera. Center charpness is excellent. On a full length portrait at F8 in the studio, the center of the portrait (mid waist height) is very sharp, eyes and face, blurred and unprintable for anything over 8x10.
Put the lens on my APS-C sensor cameras and it does fine again. Bokeh is nice, the price is right...just can't use it on my D700.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Nikon SLR:
So far I am very pleased. I've used this for about 3 weeks now and I've got no complaint. It's sharp, fast, produces nice color and contrast. I cannot say if it is better or worse than another lens of it's focal range because I've not used them, but for the price of this one compared to the others I cannot possibly fathom what more those lenses could give you. I am extremely happy with this lens and cannot imagine being happier if I had paid 2X as much!
This lens is heavy, but it should be :) and I like the balance of it on my D600. The tripod collar is solid and the overall lens construction seems 1st rate.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Nikon SLR:
I was looking for a fast, medium focal length zoom lens to do corporate head shots and portraits. I already have a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 and love it. I figured I'd try this one and I'm really pleased with the results. The first set of headshots were tack-sharp and the 2.8 aperture is perfect for blurring the BG. The zoom control is not as smooth as the Nikon but I can live with that. It focuses fast and feels comfortable in the hand. The macro, although not 1:1, is a great bonus as is the 6-year warranty! Definitely a great buy.

I wanted to purchase another F/2.8 lens for 24-70mm but it was so expensive. I read good reviews about this lens so I thought I would give it a try. I wasn't disappointed. I used it recently for an entire wedding. Had no issues and worked great, and I'm very happy with the results.

I only have kit lenses to compare this to, but so far it's pretty good. Works well in low light. Is heavier then my kit lenses, but that's to be expected. It's not so heavy that I get tired holding it. So far I am happy with it.

This lens is very versatile and I take it with me everywhere. Love the sharpness and clarity this lens offer as well as harnessing light just as good as the more expensive lens competitor. Its construction is solid and well made and focusing is very fast and responsive. I hope to purchase more Tamron lenses in the near future from this wonderful store B and H photo.

does not have an easy fit onto the nikon D600, used it at an indoor event and is provided good range for group shots and individual photos.
On a large group shot indoors at 2.8 there was some distortion in the people on the edges. Sharp focus though even using f/2.8

I am an amateur photographer who has been using a Sigma 18-300 f3.5 zoom for the past few years. With a new baby on the way, it was time to find a fast lens that could keep up with a new baby on the move in various lighting conditions. The constant f/2.8 across the length of the barrel allows great depth of field and is super fast in low light. This is a great option for those that can't shell out $[$] for the Nikkor version of this lens.

I purchased this lens because the price difference compared to the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 was a lot nicer to my wallet. Also, I had several recommendations from fellow photographers which lead me to this lens. It's light-weight and sturdy. I haven't had a chance to do a full photo shoot with it yet, but I have tested it around the house and everything looked great so far!

I shoot indoor dog events (conformation and agility) and TaeKwonDo test events. Both typically have poor lighting and faster moving subjects - this lens has allowed me to keep my ISO down around 1600 and get shutter speeds in the 300 to 400 range. Worth every penny!
I do think it's a bit soft at 2.8 but even having a constant 3.5 it a great step up from the typical 3.5 - 5.x zooms

While the lens is new and I have not used it under a lot of conditions (dim, action, flash) to really understand its capability, it has all the options and the first images are very clear. It will be a keeper and a basic lens for my kind of photography.

This lens is every bit as sharp as most reviewers have raved about it. The AF motor isn't all that noisy and it's very fast. The petal hood is on the flimsy side and it's a little harder to put on and off but that's just nitpicking. This lens is a gem!

After reading most of the reviews here, both positive and negative, I went for it and I can say that I'm so glad I did. I don't know why a lot of people talk about how slow the AF is with the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 but it focuses just fine. It focuses fast enough that you don't have to worry about the motor being noisy. It hunts just like my other Nikon lenses when lighting is not optimal. I have other Nikkor lenses, both zoom and primes and this Tamron's AF is on par with them. Now, the best part. All the talks about it being SHARP is not just talk. It is a sharp, sharp lens. I must have a "good" copy because I don't experience any of the negative AF and blurry images that some reviewers are talking about. Granted, the hood is a little flimsy, but the lens itself looks and feels just as solid as my Nikkors. Take the plunge and go for it!!!

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Nikon SLR:
I have spent the past few days reading various reviews about various zoom lenses. I hate to say it but I've become very skeptical about zoom lenses in general. Most of the review sites take BRAND NEW zoom lenses and give them a MTF test. My thinking is that this is when the lens is the tightest and best optical shape. Even at this BRAND NEW condition they still have various problems. Light fall off in the corners, problems with edge to edge sharpness. And surprisingly, not all lenses are not their sharpest at mid stop down.
What makes things worse is exposure to the real world. These zoom lenses get used, the internal mechanisms get worn, they get dropped or mishandled from time to time. My thinking is that over time this makes the lenses optically worse off, but they don't get reviewed at this state, so we'll never really know.
I've had three copies of this lens for about six or seven years. I noticed that at one point I couldn't get them to focus correctly. So, I went home and set up a newspaper against the door and photographed it at various f-stops. I was alarmed so I sent it in for repair at Tamron in New York, not their authorized service centers. They got it back to proper working order.
I've checked this lens out again recently, wide open there is softness in the corners but I am very pleased. My thinking is this. First, I am going to check all my lenses for sharpness and I will send them in for repairs if needed. I will be most concerned with prime lenses. When I have mission critical shots such as group shots where faces need to to be sharp edge to edge I will defer to my prime lenses. When I am at a wedding reception where edge to edge sharpness isn't as critical I will use this lens.
Nikon has a 28-70 f2.8 which was legendary good, or so Ken Rockwell says. It weighted around 2 pounds! But it was discontinued for the Nikon 24-70 f2.8. That one was made with plastic to lighten it up.
If you buy this lens, the first thing you should do is get out your newspaper and try photographing it at various ranges, wide open stopped down. Change the ranges from 28mm to 70mm. If it doesn't live up to your standards either send it back for another copy or send it to Tamron for repair.
I am a bit of a realist when it comes to zoom lenses. I don't expect perfection, but just the same I won't settle for marginal. For my set of expectations this lens is great! I pulled it out of the safe and stuck it on my new D800 and was really impressed with what it could do. For the three times the price for the 24-70mm Nikon lens I would rather put the money into better prime Nikon glass. When you consider the weight, optics and value of this lens, it can't be beat. Don't give up on it just because you get a bad copy the first time around.

Comments about Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Nikon SLR:
I am a lifestyle portrait photographer who shoots a D90. All my other lenses are Nikkor so I am use to quality lenses that produce tack-sharp images. This lens was recommended by a reliable source so I took the risk and bought an inferior brand lens since I am not excited to spend $ for the nikkor version. Big mistake. This lens is so inferior. It felt plastic-y and cheap mounting it on my D90, and when I zoomed in and out for the first time, I was sick to my stomach. The lens feels so disgustingly cheap. Still, I decided to use it for a family shoot the nest day. It seemed okay during the shoot, but when I opened the images in Lightroom, my heart sunk. My pictures were soft and blanched and grossly UNSHARP. It was like going from BlueRay quality to VHS. During Lightroom review I got to a series of pictures that looked tack sharp and I started to feel hopeful... until I remembered that I had switched to my nikkor 18-200mm lens for those. BIG difference between nikkor and tamron. Be aware that you do indeed get what you pay for. I am returning this lens and springing for the nikkor version.
