I avoided Behringer for a long time, just because the brand is synonymous with "entry-level". But I needed more channels and this was what I could afford. Eight preamps with A/D, plus 8 D/A to line outs... just can't beat it for the price.

I use it to extend a MOTU 8pre to 16 inputs through the ADAT connections, worked first time. Preamp snobs will scoff, but I've noticed no particular problems doing a few live recordings of rock bands... maybe not something you want to record a CD of chamber music with, but plenty good enough to make a decent rock MP3 or video.

I connected the ADA8000 in a matter of minutes and I had another 8 analog in and outputs to my HD2 Pro Tools. An easy connection worked with my 96i/o and 002 with an adat light pipe SIMUX cable not included. Slaved to word clock in a snap. The XLR outputs rather than typical 1/4"TRS were a drag and I had to get some cables that cost as much as the unit. The lack of sonic integrity for this budget item was apparent the moment I a/b compared with my 96i/o outputs. You get what you pay for. This unit is good for utility work at best and suited for driving head phone amps or extra sets of analog meters rather than critical listening or recording.

I Purchased This Unit Along With A E-MU 1212M PCIe Sound Card (Reviewed Elsewhere Here On B&H)
I Was A Little Nervous About This As it Is My First Experience With A Preamp With An ADAT Interface.
I Can only Say The Installation Went Flawlessly! It Connected With My EM-U Card Without A Problem.
I Use It For The 8 Inputs AND 8 Outputs ( I Drive 2 Stereo Amplifiers, A Subwoofer Amplifier, And A Stereo Headphone Amplifier, However I Want To. The Preamps Sound Good To My Ears With Plenty Of Dynamic Range And Are Very Quiet. Should I Expand My Studio Further, I Would Not Hesitate To Purchase Another To Go With My E-MU 1811 Card.
Where I Am Located, I Ordered The Converter On One Day And It Arrived The Next. Way To Go B&H Crew, The Service Is Outstanding…. As Usual!

This is slightly mislabeled, while it is technically a mic preamp, it"s real purpose is as a a/d/a converter. Knowing this i purchased this to accompany my phonic firefly 808 adding 8 channels through the adat connection to get 16 total tracks. have it running at 48kHz off word clock signal. Took 5 minuets to set up, plug in and play. It really is that simple and easy, and for this price...

Comments about Behringer ULTRAGAIN PRO-8 Mic Preamp/Converter:

One thing the manual doesn't mention is how to use the unit as a stand-alone mic pre. Here's an application that can use an 8-channel pre.

Sometimes on large corporate shows we have 400'-500' of audio snake. Some lectern mics and condenser mics used to record audience reaction (fx) have very low output and pushing that low mic level signal down 500' of copper is not a good idea.

The Yamaha HA-8 is the best option, but as it's not inexpensive you can use the Pro-8 instead. The way to make the Pro-8 into standalone mode is to run an optical cable from the output right back to the input. Voila - stand-alone mic pre.

These used to be great pieces, super cheap and fairly reliable. However they were redesigned for "better sound" and in doing so the outputs now have delay and the D/A mutes below 60db. Google ada8000 muting delay and read all about it, had to send 6 of these back.. Behringer even discusses the issue on their website suggesting you put pink noise into your signal to keep the D/A un muted. weak

I uses two Ultragain Pro-8 with a Alesis HD24 giving me 16 inputs. The Adat input and output makes connection easy. The XLR connections at the front are easy to use in a rack mount. The gain pot is small but OK for set and forget levels rather that continuous changes. Noise level very low. Great for the price. Great mobile recording rig. Easy set up.

This mic pre won't make an SM58 sound like a U87 - or even an SM58. But it sounds OK and it works with no problems. If you need the extra pres to expand your digital console or workstation, you can't beat the price. Just don't put your most important vocal or strings mic on it. Save it for "extras".
