With its high intensity #2 Reflector & Prismatic Glass, the tiny focusable Lowel ViP Pro-Light is more efficient than a mini-Fresnel of equal wattage, yet it gives an exquisite even light, with Fresnel-like shadow quality. It can be used as a low-level key or accent light, fill light (with diffusion), or backlight.

In addition to a wide variety of customizing accessories, its versatility can be increased by switching its 12' AC cable for an optional DC adapter cable and swapping its bulb for use as a camera-top fixture. Other bulbs, and plug adapters are available. When fitted with an FVL 200 watt bulb (available separately), the Pro-Light will emit a beam of 23 footcandles @ full flood, 143 footcandles @ full spot, from a distance of 10 ft (3 m). With a GCC 100W lamp @ 12V DC: 12 fc in flood and 58 fc in spot.

Focus Flood
  • Change the setting from "spot" to "flood" position, or anywhere in between by turning knob on side of unit
  • Has a focus range of 6:1 with optional lamp.
  • Easy Access
The front end comes off for easy access for no-tool lamp change.
    Multi-Use Source
Substituting the prismatic glass for the optional clear glass turns light into a non-focusing, high intensity spotlight, for long throw situations.

I recently purchased this Lowel Pro-Light for a photography assignment (still life shot). I also purchased the matching 4 leaf barndoors.

With the barndoors fitted on this little guy, I have to say it is the cutest light I have seen :) It looks like a mini version of the Hollywood style fresnels. I know, that doesn't say much about its benefits.

With a 125watt bulb (purchased locally) it was more than powerful enough for my needs. I believe this unit can handle up to 250 watts, but I would seriously worry about the heat that wattage would produce (see below). The ability to focus the light with the knob is also great.

As far as build quality, I really have no concerns. I don't plan on using this light in outdoor/damp environments (nor should you if you are using the AC version of this light).

*HEAT: I will warn you though.. the housing of the light does get hot, and I did almost burn myself a few times when trying to adjust the light angle with the light powered on. How else are you supposed to visualize where the light throw is if the light is not on?

Lowel should have incorporated a handle into the housing which extends over the power switch on the rear of the unit. This way a user could grab the handle to reposition the light if necessary, rather than worry about where on the housing to grab the light.

I rate this light 4 stars because of the heat/burn risk mentioned above. If this light incorporated a handle, I would have given it 5 stars!

I've used a plethora of different lights on productions. Pro-lights are cheap, and small, and quite focusable. However, I'm abusive towards my lights, and while ARRIs and LTMs take the beatings with pride and grace, Lowell fails to follow suit. The barn door contraption (not included with this kit but necessary to control light) that comes with the kit is made of bendy cheap metal that has to be precisely mounted in a channel around the edge of the light. Not good. Also not good is the rust-resistance. Working in a moist location (we do sometimes escape the confines of a cushy conference room on occasion), I had my light kit open for a few hours, causing condensation on the surface of my 4 (3 in working condition) Pro-lights. A few hours later they were rusty. Eww. My Peppers escaped unscathed. The ONLY reason this light is being given even two stars is because it's cheap, and small. Those two traits do not make it worth the aggravation, in my opinion.

Comments about Lowel ViP Pro-Light (120VAC/12VDC):

I own the lowel DP, and the lowel Omni light. Adding this light to mt arsenal was the cherry on top. Great for light filmmaking, especially when lighting your subject from above. Its a small very compact light but don't let that fool you. very bright, and small enough to place just about anywhere.

Low output, just enough to provide fill light or a spotlight in the background of a photo. Like, easy to carry around and convenient to use. Long cords come with them.

Comments about Lowel ViP Pro-Light (120VAC/12VDC):

I used the ViP Pro-Light for shooting assignments such as documentaries, dramatic scenes, etc. I selected this light for its great perfomance in shooting scenes. I am able to use it as a flood light or spotlight. The light is very intense, which is good for certain scenes. If I want it less intense or softer, I use the diffuser that snaps on in a second. I am enjoying the Lowel ViP Pro-Light.

I use these lights for interviews and b-roll for indoor shots. Restarting my videography business and this is a great set of lights to restart building my kit. Versatile enough to get going with projects. It runs hot, but that's expected of tungsten lights. Would be nice to have gels/gel frames packaged into this kit.

I had this item on my B&H wish list for the longest time. Finally I bought it, and have done several video interviews with it using it as a hair light. No more using a dimmer switch, scrims and barn doors to reduce the lights I already own like the omni and tota to use as a kicker or hair light.I got the snoot with it which is great!

I owned one of these for years and lost it. I had to buy another. That should tell you how much I like it. It's less money than an Arri 150 and more light output.

Make sure you get the barn doors, though. You'll really need them to help control your light.

You might also want to get a dimmer to help reduce the output of the light.

What does one look for in a light? Reliability? Value? Ease of use? Whatever it is you're not going to find it in this light. Flimsy and frustrating, this miniature nightmare not only is difficult to use but also it's flimsy. Bulbs slid in and out of place, burned at an unbelievably hot temperature and broke into pieces inside this luminary death trap. If your friend buys this light then go ahead and do that person a favor. Destroy the bulb in the fires of Mount Doom and never speak of this light again.

Got this light to do interviews and I think I'm going to buy another. The quality of light is very nice. I got the barn doors as well and they saved me on a job recently where I was in a tight location to interview and I was able to use them to feather the light as my key. Otherwise, my 250w bulb would have been way to bright. The only downsides to this light are the fact that it's a hot light (and I mean hot), and therefore always a little more dangerous. And, it would really be nice to have a dimming switch, which is sold separately. For the price though, it's a great compact little light!

Comments about Lowel ViP Pro-Light (120VAC/12VDC):

I am a cinematographer, and I almost always need something really small and controlled the finish the lighting of a scene and this light does that job beautifully.

While you can't rely on it alone, its incredibly versatile especially as a high light/special. I highly recommend you get the barn doors, and snoot with it.

Comments about Lowel ViP Pro-Light (120VAC/12VDC):

For the price this is a great light. Very versatile and small and packs a punch with a 250W bulb. It does get very hot though and needs time to cool down after being on for long periods of time. The tilt screw can be a little finicky at times and needs extra tightening but other than that its a good design.

Comments about Lowel ViP Pro-Light (120VAC/12VDC):

Use this for wedding films. It's a great compact and effective light and works great with the Impact D1000 1,000W AC Dimmer Control (110-120V) dimmer. I've used the omni and Dedolight and found this light to be sufficient. I was especially looking for a compact solution.

Comments about Lowel ViP Pro-Light (120VAC/12VDC):

Lowell lights never really impressed me that much in the past but I decided to get a couple of these bad boys to get a good startup kit that's easy to travel with. I was surprised at the quality of output from these lights. Definitely along the lines of fresnel light quality. The build is pretty solid, though a far cry from an actual fresnel. But for the cost and light weight nature, this can't be beat.

Comments about Lowel ViP Pro-Light (120VAC/12VDC):

I have two of these guys and the light quality is great. Gives a nice punch or diffused fill and can tuck them anywhere for those little splashes or pools of light. Love the light quality and versatility.

BUT, they are FRAGILE! It takes very little to damage the bulb, I've taken them carefully-padded and packed right out of the case and had to swap bulbs (which is easy, thankfully). Any little bump in moving them or ding and I hold my breath. By contrast, my mimi-Mole lights could be dropped down the stairs and the bulb still might make it. Great light quality, but be very careful in handling them when traveling! I also echo other reviewers in wishing the on/off switch was in-line with the cable rather than on the unit itself.
