Product Highlights
  • 8-Channel
  • 30 Bands
  • 1/3 Octave
  • Optical I/O
  • 10-Segment LEDs per Channel

The DEQ830 from Alesis is a digital, 8-channel graphic EQ housed in a one-space, rack mount enclosure. The EQ offers 30 bands of equalization, linkable or independent, with 12dB of cut or boost. The unit operates at Constant Q, a process in which the range of frequencies affected by a single band stays the same regardless of the amount of cut or boost.

Although the unit functions in the digital domain, analog-style controls are provided for instant editing of any band or combination of bands. Any of the 30 bands can be viewed on eight discrete channels at the switch of a button and any changes stored in 100 user programs. A Real-time Analyzer (RTA) mode with selectable metering allows for visual feedback of incoming and outgoing audio signals.

Audio quality is preserved using 24-bit analog to digital and digital to analog conversion with internal processing carried out using 28-bit word lengths. The DEQ830 can operate at either a +4dBu or -10dBV setting.

Comments about Alesis DEQ830 Digital EQ:

I purchased the DEQ830 to get some EQ on the input stage of my project studio. I use it with a Mackie Blackbird. It works very well as an Analog to Digital (ADAT lightpipe) converter or a Digital to Analog converter which helps me take full advantage of the Mackie's ADAT i/o.

It is helpful to have memory allocations for different EQ settings and individual EQ curves to be able to recall a certain setting to a different channel at a different time.

It will be very useful in live applications where I need to send multiple mixes out to different speakers (i.e. in a live theatre installation where sound needs to come from different sources).

I would caution anyone using it in live applications as an INSERT on the signal chain: there is a 10milisecond delay at each of the conversion stages. This is to say that when an analog signal comes into the unit it is converted to digital then processed then converted back to analog for the output. In all there is about 20miliseconds of delay between input and output which could cause filtering or timing problems for some applications. This is something to keep in mind of you're running delay lines. It might also add to complications if you're tracking with it.

Using Logic Pro9, I ran a mix out through 2 channels of the DEQ all via ADAT Optical and recorded the returns. There didn't seem to be any delay in this application... still running tests.

In all, I think this unit works very well for the price: 8 cannels of 30 band EQ plus 8 A/Ds or D/As to boot in one rack space! It's a good thing to slide into your rack "just in case".

8 channels of pure digital equalisation in 1 shallow rack unit? All connected to and from my digital console with just two lightpipes? I'm LOVIN' it !!
