Comments about Birns & Sawyer Director's Micro Viewfinder:

I am a director starting out in video/movie/short film production. I have been using a DSLR for a few years.

This viewfinder will help beginners get a better idea of how a shot would be framed with a certain lens length from a certain spot – it doesn't show depth of field, distortion, or any of the other lens properties that come with different lens lengths. So, if you are in a crowded space and you can only put the camera in certain spots, it's very helpful for choosing a lens length. If you can move the camera anywhere, it's not that helpful because the image through this viewfinder would look the same at 50mm as it would through 100mm if you stood farther back. In case you're confused by that statement, this is not the case with actual lenses.

If you are using a 16x9 full frame DSLR, the lens length options go from 18mm to 200mm. I haven't tested this out against my actual lenses yet, but the 18mm looks more like 30 to me.

Lastly, I find myself wondering if I would have been better off saving my $200 and carrying my DSLR around with my 28-210 zoom lens. This would give me accurate lens lengths + depth of field information and a rough approximation on distortion.

My conclusion is that it depends on how much you value convenience. This viewfinder is tiny and feather-light, so you can carry it all day without getting bogged down or annoyed by a 10-pound camera+lense around your neck. Your hands are also more free to write things down (or whatever else you might want to do with them...) Lastly, on an actual shoot, your camera is likely to be in use (if you're like me) so having this thing handy could save you a lot of time – as long as you keep the lens length issue in mind and have a good idea of what your different lens lengths will give you in terms of DOF and distortion.
