Sound Devices MP-1 - Single Channel Portable Microphone Preamplifier

You Pay: $409.00

Designed for high-definition field production applications, the Sound Devices MP-1 is a single channel microphone preamp that delivers studio grade audio in a portable, lightweight package. The unit features a transformer balanced XLR microphone input and line level output resulting in high gain and low noise floor. A large gain adjustment dial provides up to 66dB of gain in eleven discrete steps.

A 3-position phantom power switch enables 12 Volt or 48 Volt phantom power for condenser microphones. A low-cut filter switch eliminates noise due to wind and proximity effect at 80Hz or 160Hz (user switchable). Peak limiter switch moderates signal peaks, eliminating distortion due to signal over load. The MP-1 is powered with 2 AA batteries for approximately 24 hours.

      Believe the hype

Comments about Sound Devices MP-1 - Single Channel Portable Microphone Preamplifier:

The naysayers are wrong or got faulty units. I have the sure version which predates sound devices as a brand, but it looks exactly the same and supposedly has the same (or very very close) signal path. Saying a tascam TD-100 sounds better is crazy talk. I have a tascam TD-100 and unless I got a bunk unit, it's way more noisy, has way less headroom and gain and sounds muddy and one dimensional in comparison. Don't get me wrong, the TD-100 is greT for the price but it's in a different glass. Need more gain before noise? Look no further. Want pro preamps that operate on aa batteries? Check. 48v phantom? Check. Solid, weather tight build quality? Check. It's not a neve, ua, focusrite red, API, etc, but it's awesome sounding to my ears and you can bring it to a mountain top or Antarctica if you want.

Comments about Sound Devices MP-1 - Single Channel Portable Microphone Preamplifier:

Bought this thinking it would be something our team wouldn't grow out of as we upgrade equipment. When paired with the Zoom H4n, it solved the problem of very low waveforms and introduced a nice body to the waveform. The MP-1 is a great way to get strong bodied sound, and has a rugged design.
Now that we are using a Tascam DR-100, we found the Tascam doesn't need the extra gain like the H4n, and the MP-1 actually introduces a slight distortion of the sound, especially noticeable with "R's" and "S's"
It now sits at the bottom of our sound box, unused. Still, a great reliable product to use your mic/ recorder combo doesn't have enough gain.

Comments about Sound Devices MP-1 - Single Channel Portable Microphone Preamplifier:

I was using this for a 60D with Magic Lantern and I had very little hiss with just the 60D but when I connected this and turned it to halfway 46db there was hiss and at full gain 66db it was unbearable. When I connected a Rode NTG-2 shotgun mic to the pre-amp the hiss was still there and just made the sound unusable for capturing transparent sounds. Noisy pre-amps but good quality and build. So I would not recommend this. The JuicedLink series are made for camcorders and only give max 16db boost which isn't enough for DSLRs unless you buy the DSLR unit. I would recommend a separate pre-amp into a field recorder. Such as the Grace Design Lunatec V3 which is transformerless and transparent sound into a Roland field recorder. More expensive but the Sound Devices pre-amps are just noisy.

Comments about Sound Devices MP-1 - Single Channel Portable Microphone Preamplifier:

Nice solid build with a good basic feature set. Optional 12v or 48v phantom power great for saving battery power when 48v not required for a microphone. The built in limiter seems right for it's intended purpose, but I didn't test it yet. Measures and sounds very good - just a little short of excellent.

            Excellent value for the price.

Comments about Sound Devices MP-1 - Single Channel Portable Microphone Preamplifier:

I use the MP-1 to power my Sennheiser wireless system. For smaller projects, when I've only got 2 channels, I use it in tandem with the MM-1 on my boom operator.
It's very clean, just like you'd expect a sound Devices Pre-Amp to sound.

The only reason I rated it 4 stars, it doesn't come with a belt clip like the MM-1. So I've had to hang it from the brackets in the front of the unit. It just takes extra time.

Comments about Sound Devices MP-1 - Single Channel Portable Microphone Preamplifier:

This small and easy to mount preamp fits right on the back of a battery pack with velcro. The knobs are easier to use than those of the HD camera it is mounted on.

The quality audio and limiter gives me much more confidence than the built-in limiter and audio pre of the camera.
