Comments about Sound Devices XL-10 Breakout/Extension Cable for 442 and 552:

Yeah, the XL-10 is pretty expensive for a cable, but if you have a Sound Devices 552, you're going to need it. It saves a lot of time out in the field. Instead of a snake's nest of separate cables in your bag, you've got everything you need in a single convenient package. The build quality is excellent. For most situations, it's the only cable I need anymore...

Comments about Sound Devices XL-10 Breakout/Extension Cable for 442 and 552:

I am a huge fan of sound devices and have always been thrilled with their products. When I needed to get a new breakout for my 552 I decided to go with their XL-10. Wow, what a disappointment. The construction of the cable itself is beautifully done and the concept is great. But I have 2 BIG issues with the male XLR breakout end. One, the breakout end is to short. When I'm connected to a larger camera, like the varicam or a sony 900, I always like to anchor the cable to the camera to relive tension on the XLR connectors. Because of the length of the breakout cable (2ft), when anchored the bulky 10 pin connecter smacks right up against the camera instead of the connector hangin just below the battery (like all my other breakout cables do). The second issue i have is with the right angle 1/8 male plug. Because of the right angle of the plug it easily pops out of the camera headphone jack. My first time out with the cable the 1/8 was popping out every 5 mins. I had to gaff tape the plug to the camera.

Now I will say the cable works great with smaller cameras, like a sony ex or HVX 200. So if thats all you ever work with, then you're all set.

My solution to the problem......I had some folks make me a new breakout end. I had them make the end longer, 3ft instead of 2ft. And make the 1/8 plug a strait end instead of a right angle. Now the cable works like a charm.

              I hope this review helps!

Comments about Sound Devices XL-10 Breakout/Extension Cable for 442 and 552:

Fantastically well built. Very convenient product to have for my mixer. Not advertised in the product page but this cable works well with the Azden FMX42a mixer as well as the Sound Devices mixers. The only thing I'd add to it is a loop out on the headphone plug on the mixer side so the camera op can listen in too but that's not a deal breaker for me, headphone splitters are cheap, not having the loop out means that when it's not needed it's not just sitting there flapping around.
