The result of using extension tubes is that the distance from the back of the lens to the film surface is longer, which means you can take photographs at shorter distances to the subject. Extension tubes are thus commonly used for macro photography and sometimes for closeup portraits.

When using the camera's TTL metering system, no exposure compensation will be required (exposure compensation is required for handheld meters).

This updated version II is now also fully compatible with Canon Digital EF-S lenses, as well as standard photo EF and TS-E lenses.

Extension Tube EF 12 II is especially suited for close-focusing with wide-angle lenses. Compatible with all lenses, except 15mm f/2.8 fisheye, 14mm f/2.8L and MP-E 65mm f/2.8.

Shortens focusing distance of lens
Compatible with digital EF-S lenses, as well as EF and TS-E lenses
White-index mark provided for digital SLR EF-S lenses
Red mark provided for photo lenses

Photography is a hobby. I like to shoot closeups but at this point don't want to spend the money on a dedicated macro lens so got this extension tube and have had it for a week. Use it mainly with my "nifty fifty" lens and have tried it with my 70-200mm f4 lens. I have a Canon 7D. It does not work with auto focus. But not a problem. Sending along a photo with and without the extension tube.

I have difficulty mounting the lens on the tube. The last 2/3 of the twist is very tight and not especially smooth. The lens mounts smoothly directly to the camera. I works well with the 180 Canon macro. Perhaps the problem is the lens mount.

Focusing is a challenge, so is DOF. But with a little patience and practice, you can get nice results.

Comments about Canon Extension Tube EF 12 II:

I had another brand of extention tube and recently purchased the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art lens. The other brand of extention tube did not work because the sigma (as well as other lenses) is rear focus which hit some of the structure of the tube. The Canon tube works perfect and now I do not have to carry a macro lense while traveling.

Comments about Canon Extension Tube EF 12 II:

This extension tube will allow standard lenses to be used in macro photography without degrading lens quality. The EF12 is the shortest and will give you the least extra CU focusing distance which can be a great help with longer lenses. I wanted to use it with my 16-35MM set at 16MM, but the furthest focusing distance was about 2" from the subject which is too close for my project. That has no bearing on the excellent quality and ease of use. Don't forget, you will lose some light value with the extension tube.

I have definitely had to practice this method of photography, but the tube works great, it is easy to put on and take off. B&H shipping was fast!!! I will continue to use B&H for my photography equipment in the future!

I've tried the Extension Tube EF 12 II separately, and with a Extension Tube EF 25 II on all of my Canon EF, EF-S, and Sigma lenses. My T5i works well with all combinations by reducing significantly the minimum focus length.

Comments about Canon Extension Tube EF 12 II:

This is the shortest extension tube by Canon. It allow full communications between the camera and the lens. Normally used for macrophotography.
This extension tube can allow stacking of 2 Canon L teleconverters. This makes it possible great magnification but at the cost of multiple f stops (2 to 4 depending on the teleconverters used) and decreases sharpness, but in a pinch, it works.

Comments about Canon Extension Tube EF 12 II:

A lot more expensive than the Kenko or Vello equivalents, but the mount is a lot more solid and ultimately, I've more confidence in the Canon product. No optical difference, although the Vello equivalent does give some sag in the mount with a heavier lens. Perhaps if I looked hard enough, I might see some corner fall off with the off-brand products.

I'm using this mostly with a TS-E 24 and 100L Macro for product photography (where it excels), and in combination, it also allows the use of a 1.4 converter with most lenses, albeit with only close range focus.

This is a useful tool. Canon's 25 mm tube is more extreme - I'd really like to see a 17mm or 18mm tube, and perhaps a minimal 6mm or 7mm. For most people, the 12 mm is the way to go.

Comments about Canon Extension Tube EF 12 II:

Any ol' extender would probably work, but I bought Canon thinking the quality would be higher. It's well built, looks nice, and the interior is well darkened. If the reader is unsure, this is not a model with glass. It's just a tube with contacts. The rings themselves need to be tighter or machined to a thicker dimension. Anything heavier than a contact lens will cause noticeable play in the body/lens interface. This droop throws off the axis. This non-orthogonality resulting from the play is slightly noticeable in the images and adds to the softening. I have both Canon extenders and two bodies, and all configurations both do the same thing. I'm thinking of unscrewing the ring and shimming the lower part to compensate for the droop. Supporting the lens will help greatly with this. Not that one should freehand with this configuration, but the wobble would drive you nuts. The contacts are well made and I have no trouble using the full features of my lenses. I can piggy-back two extenders with no electrical problems. It's pass-though and doesn't do anything active or fancy to the signal. The camera won't know it's there (for better or worse). AF will work within it's limited range but will be coarse in adjustment. IS will fight the play in the extender with every vibration but will generally work. Make sure your platform is steady. If I had to do it over again, I'd have tried my luck with an el-cheapo extender kit.

I purchased this to use (initially) with the kit 24-105mm Canon lens that came with my Canon 6D camera. It came with end covers and a nice case (typical Canon lens case). I've tested it for a few days now and so far it produces great results. I do plan to purchase a dedicated macro lens. The EF 25 II may have been a bit better with this lens as it would have gotten me a bit closer focus.

Comments about Canon Extension Tube EF 12 II:

I first heard about the Extension Tube Ef 12 II while watching photographer Joe DiMaggio's workshop for B&H. DiMaggio encouraged photographers to carry this highly portable extension with them at all times. I took seriously his recommendation and I am satisfied with the results. I don't believe, however, that the tube can or will replace a good macro lens. Since I cannot carry a 100mm macro lens with me whenever go, and macro photography is not central to what I mostly capture, I am highly content with the idea of keeping the tube inside my shoulder bag or even inside my pocket. As we all know, the photographic world is full of surprises.

Comments about Canon Extension Tube EF 12 II:

This is a nicely machined tube whose job is to extend the lens from the "film" plane, thus allowing for larger images of smaller subjects. It has some electrical conductors so the camera can talk to the lens. It keeps stray, non-image light out.The quality of the resulting image depends not so much on the Extension Tube, but on the ability of the lens to present a sharp image to the sensor; in turn, this depends upon the photographer to mount the camera more rigidly than with a "normally sized" subject. The closer you get, the more camera shake and lens aberrations destroy the intended image. This Extension Tube and its associated sibling provide all the mechanical requirements when used singly or in conjunction with the sibling. It does so easily and well; you do get what you pay for.A subject, Wildlife, has been checked as an appropriate use. This applies if the wildlife is the size of an ant. Not so good on lions or tigers! This shorter Extension has the same "Pros" as the longer one in the review I just wrote. There are no "Cons" in either review.

Comments about Canon Extension Tube EF 12 II:

Apart from its primary use in macro photography, where it's
of course quite useful, here is another one:
Canon's newest extenders cannot be coupled directly,
but if you put this tube in between them, they can!
Not sure Canon approves, but if you do need this extra reach...
