What item is right for you?

Ask our Experts!

This 60" Photogenic Eclipse Plus white, flat-panel umbrella with silver lining has an extra white panel added during construction. The result is the elimination of the reflection of the metal frame of the umbrella in the eyes of your subject, or on highly reflective surfaces, such as chrome or brass.

The PLUS cover is a removable black with a bonded silver lining designed to produce an extra stop of light. This produces more reflected soft-light, allowing placement slightly farther from your subject.

This size is perfect for portraits of small groups of people, and medium sized product set ups.

Softens and broadens the light output of any strobe or lower wattage constant light.
A silver umbrella will add specular highlights -- a little bit more "snap", than a white umbrella.
It may add 1/2 to 1 f/stop of light output, depending on the light source used.

For weddings, I got this 60 to cover small groups. Thequality of the materials is good, and the reflector innerlining is an off white/light champagne color satin material- I don't understand why they call it silver since the lightreflects off the off white satin. The silver part is BEHIND the satin, and bonded as one pieceto the black cover. This cover is advertised as removable, but first, it is not too easily removable - and it comeswith no instructions - and secondly, once removed, you'releft with the off white satin - not silver. I did not try toremove the satin - looks like it was NOT designed to beremoved...hence again, why call it a silver umbrella. In theend, I see no benefit to removing the black cover. The satin is only slightly translucent - so perhaps thelight still goes through and the silver behind this satinaids the reflectivity of the umbrella on the whole, but Ifail to see how it can add up to an extra half stop oflight. But I may be just wrong about this and I am not aboutto test it.The quality of light is soft wrap around beautiful! I amactually very happy with this umbrella. I got the Impactumbrella adapter (SKU: IMBSM) that is worth every penny -great value!I would buy this umbrella again. It's a good value, but theadvertising/description needs to be improved so as not toconfuse customers.

Purchased a pair for lighting larger wedding groupings using a pair of speedlights on each umbrella. One was immediately returned due to defective stitching. Clear plastic protective sleeve was badly ripped up on all three to where they could not be reused.

I like the design concept but the 60" version has weak construction. In a lightstand holder, the center shaft literally bows under the weight of the umbrella. Because the shaft is a hollow tube, you can't tighten the holder without denting the tubing.

I like the results I get with these umbrellas but I don't expect them to hold up to frequent use. Too bad.

I do a lot of research before I panything, I believe for the price these are they are a great investment. I had the ones with the white, I use the 320 watt second AC/DC strobes and find these to do everything I need them to do.

Comments about Photogenic 60" Eclipse Plus Umbrella (White with Silver Lining):

Just a point of clarification to some of the posts where there is confusion about the silver lining on the black removeable top (I agree not 100% the easiest to remove). The silver behind the white is there for one purpose, to further reflect any light that goes through the satin. So any light source that hits the umbrella is going to have some go through the satin. The design indicates that there is some transparency because without the black, the umbrella becomes a shoot through light source vs. a reflected one. With the silver lining, any light which goes through the satin is reflected back in addition to the light reflected by the white satin vs. being absorbed by a standard black unlined top. That's about all there is to that part. Other than that, the stitching could be better, but nothing that you can't take care of yourself with a needle and thread. If you're a photographer, you also need to be part "MacGyver". (Some may need to google that). :-)

Although I've not yet used the product, I like what I see. I'm trusting the silver lining will kick back as much light as possible. I'm planning on using this in combination with a Lightware Foursquare flash bracket.

On the down side, the plastic sleeve which houses the umbrella is of poor quality. It is brittle and small sections were missing when I received the product.

This looks like a quality umbrella, but [...] The black lining is supposed to be silver on the inside - providing an "extra stop" of light when used as a bounce umbrella, but there was no silver lining - just a black cover like any other umbrella. It's pretty huge, and as a NYC photographer not something I want to carry on location. I've purchased the "strobist" 43" collapsible umbrella instead, which is much easier to bring with me on location, and just use it in shoot-through mode usually, and in bounce mode when I need the extra distance for some reason.

i recently used two of these for some wedding group shots with a background setup. I wanted to blow out the background with both on each side. These spread the light very well and there was minimal airbrushing to remove any non-whites in the background. (some slight grays near the center).

For portraits, these have given me nice light.

They were larger than I had imagined when ordering these. Given I do not always have large studio access, they can be over-sized for home use. In retrospect the 43s would have been more suitable for me. But these 60s worked well in a large, white room.

Had these for 6 months and they still in great shape.

Great quality for the price, and light quality excellent. Two things I don't like:
The umbrella shaft is hollow, and asking to be broken (i have not broken mine yet, however), as with most umbrellas, so this is not uncommon.
The 'shoot through' silver umbrella really isn't translucent enough in my opinion, but that's just me.
Other than those two things, i'm happy with the product.

Good: Soft light. Versatile. Some had mentioned the way the outside cover releases - I like it - just pull and "bend" the cap away from the end of the arm and it pops right off. Two umbrellas in one. Like the inner lining to take the spokes out of the reflection.

Bad: Soft main trunk on umbrella - set screw makes a dent every time you secure it.

Too bad.
