Comments about Digi-Slave Mini L-Ring Ultra LED Ring Light:

I purchased this ring light specifically for macro work with my 60mm macro lens on my Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera. I wanted a small and light unit and the Mini L-Ring Ultra is just that. There are other larger units with more LEDs that put out more light but for my closeup work the Mini-L Ring Ultra works just fine. The added light permits faster shutter speeds to reduce the effects of camera shake and smaller aperatures to increase depth of focus. The light output would not be sufficient for portrait use but is great for macro work. I deducted one star from the rating because of the way the light mounts. It threads on the front of the lens and when the threads are tight you have no control over how the light is oriented relative to the lens. Depending on your particular lens the light case portion that houses the battery may be below the lens, above the lens, or to the left or right side or anywhere else. It would be nice if the light was able to rotate to a position of your choosing, especially for macro work.

Comments about Digi-Slave Mini L-Ring Ultra LED Ring Light:

With my Tamron 60mm f/2.0 lens at life-size (1:1) macro ratio, the Mini L-Ring Ultra LED Ring Light adds about 6-1/2 f-stops of extra illumination. This enables going, for example, from a marginally hand-holdable 1/80 sec at f/2.0 with no depth-of-field, to 1/400 sec at f/8.0 minimizing camera shake and adding depth-of-field! It is necessary to use a 55mm to 52mm step-down ring with my Tamron 60mm lens, but I don't notice any vignetting at macro distances. The Digi-Slave Mini Ring Light is far less expensive than a flash ring light and doesn't require mounting a cumbersome unit to the camera hot shoe. The camera metering system easily takes care of exposure.

Comments about Digi-Slave Mini L-Ring Ultra LED Ring Light:

This thing was very underpowered. Light output was very poor. Returned it and bought a Metz ring flash instead. It was a nicer idea than in reality.

Comments about Digi-Slave Mini L-Ring Ultra LED Ring Light:

It works. It fits a 52mm filter thread. Fine for my EFs 60mm F/2.8 Macro Lens.

I also have one that I hacked swapping the LED's for UV LED's. Both work good enough for amateur macro photography.
