The Kensington Expert Pro (Mouse) Trackball (model #K64325) is well designed, well made and offers the features needed for a high productivity workstation system. The sensitivity to trackball motion is at a level well suited to general workstation pointing needs. The ball glides easily in its socket and can be tipped out for cleaning out the inevitable dust accumulation. The four buttons provide more that what is needed for the expected multi-button Unix/Linux "mouse" device, and the convenient scroll ring around the ball is a significant boon. The USB interface to the host system is supplemented by a PS2 adapter for older systems (I find it very helpful to have the same pointing device on both my "legacy" server/firewall system and my primary production workstation). The provision of an optional wrist rest that attaches to the base unit will almost likely be an ergonomic necessity for people who spend a long time at their system doing production work (such as the software development that I do).
Though the construction is quite solid for even professional workstation use, it is not up to industrial levels of robustness. The shape of the base unit - a slightly convex top and buttons on a casing angled towards the user - while adequate could have been designed with a much more hand-cupping shape and the buttons placed where the fingers naturally fall to significantly improve its ergonomics; the button placement at the four corners of the ball platform requires more finger and wrist motion than is desired, though the buttons are helpfully quite large. Slight inconsistency in manufacturing precision also show where this matters in the ball glide: In the two units that I have in one the ball glides very freely while in the other it moves easily but can not be "spun" freely for fast zipping across a large, multi-screen display.
Since manufacturers have apparently abandoned new development of trackball designs their seems to be no more effort to build the "perfect" trackball that fits naturally in the hand in its "at rest" position with the ball and actuation buttons placed in "effortless" positions. After an exhaustive search of all available trackballs, both consumer and industrial, I concluded that the Kensington Expert Pro Trackball is the best available for professional workstation use.

Works well, took a while to break in the trackball. I propped the wrist rest on a thin book to get a good angle. Works well in CAD. The scroll ring is cheap feeling, but works well (this was no surprise from other reviews). The software (trackball works) is OK, but does not have alot of programmability. Accelleration does not include detailed control. The software worked fine on one windows 7 64 bit machine, but on a windows 7 64 bit laptop it crashes on startup despite several reinstalls. I have not tried Kensington support, since I read so many comments that it is pointless to try--maybe one day when I have some time....
Comparing to a CST laser trackball this is not as well made, and the trackball itself doesnt feel as nice, but is much cheaper to buy. Certainly way nicer to use than, say a Logitech laser trackball. I would recommend it with the caution about the software.

There are more high-end trackballs available, but they are pricey and the software is PC only. If you have a Mac and want to use a trackball, this is your baby.

I've been using the old, discontinued, grey Kensington Turbo Mouse Pro, which was phenomenal, for a long, long time. Had to get a new one and am thrilled that one is an excellent replacement. The angle of the wrist pad, however, is not quite as perfect as my old one, but not too bad.

I bought this product to use pro tools more effectively. I think for how much this product costs the quality could be better. It works though.

Comments about Kensington 4-Button USB Expert Pro Mouse - Trackball:
Trackball works great I'm pretty happy with my purchase but there are some downfalls.
1. The slide ring is not very smooth
2. I have to open the Trackball preferences for my custom settings to go into effect when I unplug my Trackball or turn my computer off. Pretty annoying.
3. I wish there were a horizontal scroll option.
Overall work good but wish I knew these things before purchasing.

Comments about Kensington 4-Button USB Expert Pro Mouse - Trackball:
It's only been a week or so using the Expert Pro, and I don't think that's enough time to see if my RSI symptoms return. However, since switching from the Apple Magic Mouse and basic MS mouse I've found:
Positives:
-I like that I'm encouraged to keep my wrist steady with the Expert Pro, whereas on a regular mouse I tend to pivot from the wrist (read: bad)
-I like the use of 4+2 programmable buttons, which keeps me bouncing less between keyboard and mouse and helps to make up for lack of Magic Mouse gestures
-The scroll wheel, through practice, is becoming more comfortable, though again, the trackball is a trade off with gestures/multi directional scroll
-At this point, I experience less pain/discomfort than with a traditional mouse, I also like that it requires less desk real estate.
Drawbacks:
-I miss the gestures of the magic mouse
-The angle of the Expert Pro causes my wrist to bend upwards during use, where a neutral position would be more comfortable in the long run
-My wrist is encouraged to sit a bit flatter than desired. Online opinions seem to posit that a "handshake" position is best
-MAJOR drawback: the response to clicks seems slow. I'm often working in Pro Tools and at this point constantly miss-select items because of a delay between clicking a button and the computer reacting (never had issues with other mice on the same computer)
-MAJOR drawback: the old MouseWorks software is not supported on Lion and up and the "newer" software, TrackballWorks is a poor excuse for a replacement, given that this device is most often used in professional settings. The (now missing) ability to have different button configurations for various user applications is essential for maximizing the feature set of this trackball.

Comments about Kensington 4-Button USB Expert Pro Mouse - Trackball:
Much prefer the trackball to the mouse. I use an iMac with a 27" screen and the trackball allows me to zip the cursor across the screen quickly with a minimum of effort. Also, the Kensington trackball has four programable buttons which I use to bring up my email or stock portfolio or a preferred application with a simple click of one of the four buttons. Trackball doesn't need cleaning as often as a mouse and when required, is simple to clean.

Comments about Kensington 4-Button USB Expert Pro Mouse - Trackball:
In a perfect world, Kensington might have made the buttons smaller and located them above (behind) the ball to keep hand and finger movements less busy. Kensington does solve some of this by allowing the user to choose the 'click' functions of all 4 buttons however. For those of you who notice and take exception to the slight ball drag I experianced at first, something seems to permanently break in or polish within several minutes and the ball rolls effortlessly from then on with a nice glide characteristic. All in all, a reasonably well thought out trackball.

Comments about Kensington 4-Button USB Expert Pro Mouse - Trackball:
I use trackballs for years and tried many models but the thumb control trackball is not my favour because my thumb will get tired easily. I skid to say the advantages of trackball over mouse here.
I am using Kensington Orbit Trackball with Scroll Ring and supposed to upgrade to Expert Pro, but love the Orbit more.
The big advantage of Expert Pro is the large trackball. It makes the moving is much precise. In order not to move the fingers many times for moving the pointer across the screen, pointer speed has to increase, but slight movement of finger is hard to prevent. Large ball makes the control easier and accurate. Right out of the box, the ball didn't roll smoothly, but after half an hour of using, it moves much better.
However, the Scroll Ring on the Expert Pro is bad. It rolls roughly with noise, a very cheap mechanical design and made. Just like low price toy plastic. Don't know why, the screen moves not as smooth and easy with this scroll ring when compare with the one on Orbit model.
I use two buttons most of time. 4 buttons are not useful to me. Because of the large ball, place my hand naturally on it makes the right click button hard to reach unless I change the position of my hand, or change the right click to the upper right button with the downloaded software.
The detachable wrist rest is even worst made, and hard to attach. A large space on desktop is needed for Expert Pro with the rest.
I go back to use Orbit although the ball is smaller. The ball and scroll ring rolls smoothly. Although there are only 2 buttons, the position of them placed on both sides of the ball allows me to use them naturally. Use it with the wrist rest feels even better. Orbit is smaller. However, with the wrist rest, it looks like a dead mouse is there on your desk... : )

I use the expert pro mouse 8 hours a day five days a week.
It is easy to get used to, very comfortable and is very fast and accurate. I am somewhat of a twitch gamer and this holds up to mice once you are used to it. The programmable buttons are nice.
Cons- loud clicks, scroll wheel could be smoother.

I bought this mouse because Microsoft discontinued the trackball explorer with program specific buttons. This thing is BAD, I use it for autocad, sketchup, photoshop, etc. where you need program specific shortcuts. 1- this stupid mouse won't let you program "enter" as a button!?!? 2- you can't program different buttons for different programs, each time I change programs I need to reprogram the buttons. 3- WAY TOO BIG, this thing is about the most uncomfortable thing I have ever used, its like a cell phone from the 80's. Please don't buy this, it is a waste of money. I will sell you mine for a dollar.0 stars
