I bought the ADVC-55 to digitize old family VHS and SVHS tapes. To date I've only used the Canopus to import segments from 2 hr tapes to iMovie for editing. I have no experience with importing to burn to DVD or other device. It is simple to set up - just plug the audio and video output cables to the Canopus and the Firewire 400 to my Mac Pro. Warning: My iMovie 08 would "hang" if opened after the Canopus was connected. Open iMovie 1st. The imported images appear to display overscan because both vertical sides show a thin area of faded image, and the bottom edge has a thin skewing defect as noted by another reviewer. I believe the problem is overscan because adjusting the tracking on the source unit had no affect on the skewing. I easily eliminated both the vertical side and bottom defects by using iMovie's crop tool. The instruction manual states that some users consider the audio input level too low so a switch is provided to increase the level by 15db. I needed the additional 15db. Monitoring the video on the computer screen while cueing the tape or importing is for video only - not audio. I worried thru my 1st project wondering if I would end up with a silent movie...I didn't but I did have to amplify the sound in iMovie. The audio sync is good unlike the result I got previously with a cheaper consumer product. If I knew then what I know now, would I still buy it? Yes!

Reliable, yes. But it does seem to decrease the video levels by about 20 points or so on the vectorscope. Not sure why this is. Not getting enough power? I boosted the levels on my switcher to compensate but that can only go so far. It seems to cap out at about 80 (where 100 equals pure white) so that things are just a bit darker than they should be.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC55 Compact Analog / Digital Converter:

I turned my computer off and just plugged it to the Firewire connector in my computer. Upon powering up, it just installed the appropriate software (I didn't have to find or do anything) and used Windows Live Photo Gallery (which came with Windows 7) to get the video converted. It saved as an AVI file (huge), but then converted it to MPEG4 using another utility. So far I used it to digitize videos made with my Sony camcorder 20 years ago, connecting to the S-Video and the stereo audio output from the camera. It works like a charm. My computer has an Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz. I haven't noticed any performance issues.

The device is compact and easy to use. My computer recognized it just a quickly as a camcorder. It did not drop a single frame in the video feed. I am very pleased.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC55 Compact Analog / Digital Converter:

I needed to digitize my old video tapes. My plan was to use the ADVC55/S-Video ports and the Firewire port on my PC thinking the quality was as good as capturing directly with my installed capture card and easier.
As a quick test, I digitized Color Bars from my old DSR-300 using the ADVC55 and checked the result ... the video levels were low and the transition between color swatches was not sharp and crisp like I expected. For comparison I removed the ADVC55 and captured directly with the S-Video on my capture card and the levels were normal ... white level around 100IRE and bars were sharp and crisp. Looked good on my old WFM.

The good - very simple to connect and use
The bad - As mentioned in a few other reviews, the video levels were low. Also, for me, the image was just not clean and sharp as I had expected but not necessarily noticeable unless you checked them side by side.

With the plethora of operating systems, computers, editing programs and user proficiency factors in use today it is refreshing to find a plug and play system that actually works the first time with no tweeking. Was able to connect to VCR and USB slot on HP computer and this device ran perfectly to produce a computer file for use on Pinnacle 16 editing program. It costs more than a lot of other converters but this one actually works and provides a good quality output.

          I highly recommend this device.

Just hooked it up to my old analog camcorder and it uploaded the video/audio flawlessly. I have the six pin ieee1394 firewire connector so I didn't even need external power. If you have old VHS tapes you want to move to your PC this is the device that will do it.

I use this item primarily to capture clips from DVD sources via S-video, directly into Vegas 12. The Pyro A/V Link I had used for five years gave out, and this item replaced it. No software or drivers are required, and Win8 installs the unit when it's first plugged in. I use 6-pin firewire, so I didn't buy the separate power supply; I just pull the plug when not in use. The brightness and color match of captured clips is much better than the Pyro ever was. For my purposes, the ADVC55 has no cons so far.

Easy to connect with a 6 pin IEEE-1394 to Firewire 800 cable for Mac (sold separately) and no need for any other power supply. Simply press the play button on the video player and the capture button in Premiere Pro, it's that simple.

I'm tying a live video switcher at my acting studio into my laptop computer with the ADVC55 Compact Analog / Digital Converter by Grass Valley. Now, when we use a two-camera setup, I can record directly to the laptop and then wirelessly throw the movies up to the TV monitor without going through a DVR, which really reduces the amount of cabling on the floor. And it's so much easier to let students see their work at home by sending their video files to online file transfer sites -- no more burning DVD's. In the near future, I hope to live stream a webcast of our classes, so the reach of my one-guy-shop acting studio can go worldwide. That's amazing. The unit works just as I'd hoped.

I use a Mac Pro tower with Final Cut Pro it could not have been easier to add this converter to my system. No drivers or anything to install, simply plug it in and you are able to use the log and capture feature to digitize from any video source you connect.

Using the ADVC55 to digitize a raft of clinical VHS tapes. Very satisfactory tool.

CAVEAT: Although the device is self-powered through the Firewire bus, professionals know that Firewire is "chatty" and such power is not always reliable. The "optional" power supply for the box really should have been included for the price- or at a competitive bundle price!

There's even space for it in the product box! That seems a bit petty. Power supply was expected as it is with any hard drive and other devices B&H sells. I cannot award it a "professional quality" checkbox without it.

The best item I purchased yet! worth every penny. I have about 50 8mm videos (analog) of precious & priceless memories, which I am transfering to DVDs via this converter (and therefore I am able to do editing as well). Set up for converter takes less than 2 minutes, it is very simple & quick, it works exactly as described. Super fast shipping too!

I used the ADVC55 to convert a camera SD signal to firewire so it could be used to project the image in pro presenter. The ADVC55 connected perfectly and was in my preferences. The picture loss no quality and worked great for my performances.

The unit functioned well although I was unable to get the audio input on the device to work for some reason. It's possble I may need to do further trouble shooting to get the audio to work but I didn't have the time so I used another product to make that happen. Don't mess with the dip switches before you try to use it, I did and it drove me crazy until my engineer fugured it out.

I read all the previous reviews and that is why I bought it. I also bought the ADVC110. I returned it for an exchange because with the first one the picture and sound kept breaking up. The second one did the same thing. So I thought I would try the ADVC55 and it did the same thing. I called Grass Valley and talked to one of their engineers . He made sure I had it set properly but it didn't make any difference. I even tried it on a stand alone editing system and two different computers. I don't understand why no one else isn't having the same issues. I really wanted it to work. Anyway I went through three of them with the same problem. I'll go back to loading VHS tapes in my digital camera and then into the editor. That works fine.

I purchased the ADVC55 to convert old 8mm video tapes to digital...and import into iMovie on my Macbook Pro. I'm turning these into DVDs before the tape deteriorates further. There are some occasions where the digital version is a bit jerky, but it's not a show stopper. Also, my Macbook occasionally freezes while staring an import. My guess is that's a Mac issue. Perhaps a more expensive converter would get rid of these issues...but maybe not. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and am confident I will get the projects completed and in pretty good shape. For the price, the ADVC55 seems good to me, and it's a piece of cake to use.
