I was looking for a reasonably priced camera quick release system that was solid, simple to use and wouldn't unexpectedly drop my camera on the ground. I looked through all of B&H's offerings and choose Giottos because they had the best combination of features.

The camera plate has two beveled edges. The plate drops into the tripod receive so that one bevel edge slides under a tapered lip located on one side of the receive. The beveled edge on the opposite side of the plate drops down on a button that automatically releases a cam shaped locking lever. The cam part of the lever swings against the bevel on the camera plate and locks the plate in place. At the same time, a safety lever locks the cam lever so that cam lever cannot be inadvertently opened.

To open the quick release, the safety lever must be squeezed against the cam lever and the cam rotated off the camera plate bevel. The camera plate can then be lifted out of the receiver.

One small problem is that the camera must be wiggled to fully seat the plate and cam. One bigger problem is the "give" of the rubber cover on the top of the plate. The torque created by the weight of the camera lens twists the rubber cover, causing a small amount of lens droop whenever the camera is mounted in the vertical orientation.

      quick to the release

I lost my quick release plate and bought this one as a replacement. It seems to work well under any camera I place it under.

Comments about Giottos Quick Release Plate:

I bought another one so I wouldn't have to swap between cameras it defeats the purpose of quick release if you have to keep changing plates. Since I use it for my dslr the video pin isn't necessary. The "C" bar used for hand tightening could be slightly larger for a better grip when attaching. Solid build, firm fit in the tripod, inexpensive.

Comments about Giottos Quick Release Plate:

I purchased my Manfrotto tri-pod with a quick release plate five years ago and I needed another quick-release plate to use with other products but still keeping the same tri-pod. The description of the product was exact and matches my orginal plate! Much easier to change equipment when each has it's own quick-release plate. Thank you for your great site.

I have used Giottos products for many years. I recently decided to put a quick release plate on my Canon "L" lenses so I can now swap out my two main lenses,( Canon f2.8 70-200mm L and F2.9 24-70mm L lenses) between my Canon 5D and 5D mark11 cameras. Giottos makes quality products.

Great Quick Release, but only fits on tripod one way.

It's nice to be able to order a small, yet important peice in a short time period and have it work properly.

I own a Giottos MH5001 3-way tripod head, and as I have two camera bodies, I bought a second quick-release plate.
This allows me to leave a quick-release plate on each body, so I can easily mount either body on my tripod.
