Canon's series of image stabilized binoculars deliver outstanding optical performance and stabilization capabilities at a very affordable price.  Whether upon the water's edge or high in the catacombs of a stadium, you'll get a close view of action with this well-contoured Canon offering.  A textured rubber coating provides a sure grip as well as a bit of protection from the elements, while the center-mounted focus and stabilizer controls are easily accessible for both hands.

The revised edition of their 12x36 model has dramatically decreased the bulk and weight of the unit.  The drawbacks are that it no longer accepts 43mm filters and the minimum focusing distance has been lengthened.

Should you get the 10's or 12's? Both!

When I reviewed the 10 by 30's some months ago, I said I expected the 12's would have better colour and sharpness than the 10's due to their low dispersion glass, but even so, I decided on the 10's for their closer focusing. When bush walking, you often come across birds less than 20 feet away ( the minimum focus distance of the 12's). That's a big handicap. Now, having bought the 12's as well, I can say that the low dispersion glass does make as big a difference as I expected. And the increase in magnification does take you to a new level.

That doesn't mean the 10's disgrace themselves at all, far from it. The 10's give an impression of a more colourful and contrasty view of the world, probably due to a slight smearing of light which doesn't happen with the 12's. The 12's don't drift towards red when looking between between the black and white parts of a bird which is seen in bright sun light on the 10's. Overall, the 12's give a much more matter of fact view of the world. Colours are rendered more accurately and very small detail is preserved, despite their considerable power.

Given the 12's magnification, you tend to find yourself viewing birds at quite extraordinary distances. I recently watched a small but harmless battle between Magpies and Currawongs that was happening on a hill side half a mile away. It was rather like watching a wild life documentary, and quite unnerving just how easily you could see everything. The 10's are equally pleasing and intimate for watching nearby action closely. They both have their place and I'm using very duty re-chargeable batteries in them..

    Some observations.
Initially, I was puzzled by the 12's stabilisation. They were jumpy and not inclined to let the image settle. I decided that this might be because they were new, and they needed time to become less "tight". I found over about five hours use, they did indeed settle down and became as stable as the 10's. I now find the 10's are almost instantaneous when the IS is turned on, while the 12's take about two to three seconds, the image improving as they do so. I find that IS always gives extra detail, and I find that I can adjusting the focus more precisely once it's active.

Overall, both binoculars are light, balance well in the hands and make bird watching a joy. I would never consider owning a non IS binocular. Both of these Canons are well worth the money.

The image stabilization works beautifully but if you get sunscreen lotion (or other oils) on the body, the surface will become a tacky black mess that will leave smears on anything that comes in contact with it. IMO, that's not a wise choice of material. Estimate: $350 to replace the body.

Comments about Canon 12x36 IS II Image Stabilized Binocular:

I bought this to take with me while hiking, skiing and for casual stargazing. It is quite compact and easy to fit in a small pack. Optics are good with small amount of color fringing at bright edges. Image stabilization works really well. I have medium sized hands and I do not find holding down the IS button a problem. The image stabilizer excels when it comes to stargazing. Moon, jupiter, andromeda galaxy, star clusters, pleiades, and asterisms look great. For fainter deep sky objects though, you will need a telescope with larger aperture and more magnification. The binoculars do not come with covers for the objectives. I bought a pair of vortex flip cap cover Size 7 and they work great. Overall, highly recommended. Just hope the electronics hold up well.

Comments about Canon 12x36 IS II Image Stabilized Binocular:

I've had mine for almost 6 yrs. They are the primary binoculars on board, we cruise full time and they see use EVERY day! They are light, comfortable, sharp focus, and the stabilization is a must for use on a boat. The only problem I have is the rubberized coating on the exterior is turning into a sticky goo. It sticks to hands, the case, anything it contacts. I am sending them to Canon's factory service to see if they can remedy the problem, since I want to keep using them. Despite the problem, I'd still recommend them. I'd love for Canon to address the problem, even though these are 6 yrs. old, they're stored and used primarily inside; they shouldn't be having this problem. They're designed to be used and should hold up better.

Comments about Canon 12x36 IS II Image Stabilized Binocular:

I was very impressed with these binoculars. If I had to describe them in a specific way, I would compare them to a first person video game, in which you turn on your sniper scope and breathe in to hold it from shaking. Pressing the stabilizer button has that effect, which makes viewing much easier and less jittery. I am very pleased with the purchase.

Comments about Canon 12x36 IS II Image Stabilized Binocular:

These are a perfect compromise between the high end expensive image stabilized binoculars and the entry models. They really work as advertised. It takes about one second for the IS to come on. It is easy to use with great glass. I bought a better case and cleaning tools for it. I recently went to Canyon de Chelly on a motorcycle trike trip. So glad to have these extra eyes.

Didn't realize what I was missing until I bought these. I bought these primarily for MLB baseball games. I'm amazed at how bright and sharp the view is and most of my games are indoors. The focus adjustment is a cinch and can be performed with or without the image stabilzation applied. The IS is truly wonderfuly making it possible to read detail at great distances which would otherwise just be a blur.

I needed binoculars with a larger than normal interpupillary distance (greater than 72mm) these fit the bill and the 12x mag was a concern. It turned out to be great with the image stabilizer. The only down side I see is they come with a flimsy rubber cover for the eye pieces ( i lost one on my first excursion)but nothing to cover the lense end of the binoculars. I can't find covers anywhere on the after market scene either. I highly recommend this product.

Binoculars are consistent with Canon quality. I have used canon cameras and lenses and found the quality to be uniformly good. These binoculars were purchased for shooting spotting and general outdoor viewing while traveling. The image stabilization is impressive. While a bit pricier than traditional binoculars I have owned, the image stabilization is worth the cost.

We loved these binoculars and their quality. I bought them for my husband and we had to return them because he wanted to be able to hunt with them and it said that no moisture could contact them at all or it could damage them. Also, he preferred that it was an adjustable zoom. The actual product itself just as it is - is exceptional quality.

Comments about Canon 12x36 IS II Image Stabilized Binocular:

Last year, I bought a pair of the Canon 10x30 IS binoculars. They were wonderful! I could see vastly more detail with the image stabilization than without. I liked the 10x so much that I decided to upgrade to the 12x36 binoculars. I wasn't disappointed.

As expected, I can see somewhat more detail with the 12x than with the 10x.

So, if you can afford the 12x, buy them. If not, go for the 10x or the 8x.

Note: with the 12x, the field of view is a little narrower. The only other drawback, and it is minor, is that the closest you can focus the 12x is about 20 feet, instead of 14 feet with the 10x.

Well the day my new 12 X 36's arrived, I nailed it!Since then I've successfully tagged a number of spectacular birds of prey including Mississippi kites and the fableous Swallow tail kite!Suffice it to say, these are the BOMB! Their stability greatly outweighs their somewhat heafty 24 oz. (pardon the pun). Optics are superb, balance is excellent, controls are very easy to adjust while maintaining a stabilized, centered target. What more do you want?

Comments about Canon 12x36 IS II Image Stabilized Binocular:

My wife was a skeptic when I told I was purchasing the Canon 12x36 IS IIs, after she focused on a Mountain Bluejay then engaged the IS... well, she's a believer now. A great pair of binoculars on their, however, the addition of the image stabilizing system puts these binoculars [along with the other Canon IS models] in a category all by themselves.

The image stabilization works beautifully but if you get sunscreen lotion (or other oils) on the body, the surface will become a tacky black mess that will leave smears on anything that comes in contact with it. IMO, that's not a wise choice of material. Estimate: $350 to replace the body.

I gave them as a birthday gift to my son for his boat and for me to watch him play NFL football. The optics are very clear with great resolution. I was able to see in detail the other end of an NFL stadium and the image was very stable. Good product Canon and thanks B and H.
